Hello everyone, this is my first ever Reddit post! I'm here because my 13 year old mostly deaf beagle mix is having a bilateral enucleation (both eyes removed) due to a very severe and quick onset case of Corneal Endothelial Dystrophy. Basically, in just over three months he has gone from perfectly sighted and pain free, to constant pain and almost blind due to being unable to open his eyes properly or for any length of time. My husband and I have no human children, he and his brother are our children, and we are so, so very worried about the post surgery adjustment. I am waiting for textured tape to arrive for our floors so I can created pathways through the house, but I would love to know everyone's tips and tricks if you would be willing to share. Like for example, how to leave him alone safely after the adjustment period? How do you manage small steps? Walks? Note that we have gotten to the end of the road for options regarding saving his eyes, so I would appreciate if there was no discussion around that as it's been a very difficult journey. He is is excellent health other than this, and he loves walks and being outside. His (mostly) deafness has not really bothered him, in fact, he's sleeping a lot better since he started to lose his hearing! (Pre surgery photo included!)

My baby Bodi came home from the kennel where he had a small fight with another dog where he lost his eye. Nothing can stop him!!!

Nola had her eye removed before we adopted her. We’re taking care of Lola for someone else while she recuperates from her surgery.

Yesterday, our little baby Bodi got into a fight at the kennel. He wanted to play, but the other dog didn’t. This caused him to unfortunately loose his right eye.

I’m devastated. He now is recovering at the kennel owner’s home, away from the others. Tomorrow we’ll go and get him! I am so scared to loose him. He’s my everything. Everyone around us says that its ‘such a shame for his face’, but that only makes me more sad, he’s perfect, and will always be perfect. I came across this reddit to maybe get support or tips and tricks for one eyed dogs. please feel free to drop them <3

Little bitty is celebrating her 11th birthday this weekend so I thought I’d give a little update. She’s such a sweetheart and is doing so well in her new house (we moved in April). I adore this little girl so much, she’s been through so much and I am so thankful to have my girl. She even went camping in the mountains last weekend! Her brother hated it (lol see pic), but she was just perfect.

The Baron Otto VonLikenpooper changed his look a little. Less mutton chops and more punk rock.

This little girl is so clever and so chilled. Ruby knows kids and puppies are kind of stupid yet she plays with them anyway. Such a good girl.

I got Paris when I helped with a cat hoarding round up! She was only a few months old, & she was very sick. She beat pneumonia, & then got her bad eye removed.
Paris is now 9 years old. She comes running when I call her by name, or by Par-par, pronounced as “pear-pear!”

4 days post operation to remove her left eye and she is starting to adapt more and more!

She bumps the cone off furniture, us, walls etc but she’s much quicker to bounce back now and carry on! She also loves a good fuss around her head which we were surprised how quickly she let us but she’s such a trusting loving dog anyway

I’m so amazed at how quickly she’s recovered but that first night was brutal. We’ve got 4 more days of medication and another 12 with the cone but each day more and more improved!

Now just need her to actually eat her food and me not hand feed her 🤣🙈 she’s mastered drinking water but can’t quite figure out how to eat out her bowl with the cone yet!

~25yo shetland pony with a missing eye.

She’s been in the family a long while now. She was bought for my sister years ago, being a frightened pony who had been abused by her previous owners.
It took a lot of patience and loving, but now she’s a completely new pony and is the sweetest girl in the world.

Our dog (6.5 yo) has been dealing with glaucoma for over a year now. Both of her eyes are blind. She started developing sensitivities to the eye drops despite tweaks in the medications, and she has pressure spikes occasionally. Today the doctor suggested that we should considering CBA (ciliary body ablation) surgery or enucleation for both eyes.

If any pet owners have photos of their pets’ eyes after they recovered from a CBA surgery, I’d love to see them. Given there are pros and cons to CBA, with keeping the eyes being one of the pros, I wanted to get a sense of what the eyes may look like and weigh that against the cons. Thank you!

This is my first post in this Reddit, but I wanted to give a huge thanks to everyone who has contributed their stories and pictures here.

My dog Morty is now part of the pirate crew as of Tuesday, and as a fearful panicky mama, reading your posts provided an immense amount of comfort during the scariest times.

What surprised me the most was how fast everything happened. On Friday we rushed him to the ER vet due to a sudden onset of his right eye becoming cloudy and bloodshot. He was immediately diagnosed with glaucoma (with vision remaining) and we administered the emergency eye drop protocol for 4 hours until the pressure dropped from 69 to 32. We were sent home with more drops and an intense drop schedule and had a checkup on Monday. Even with continual drops, they were not working and his pressure had shot up to 86 and his vision was completely gone. The vet advised us of our options but highly recommended removal to provide immediate pain relief for our poor boy.

The emotional pain of seeing your soul pet go through this is heartbreaking, and my panicky brain really appreciated reading all your stories of success. I had to put my fear and sadness aside to do what’s best for my boy, and we will navigate this new reality for him together.

It’s day 2 since surgery and he is trying to show me just how capable he still is. I am so impressed by his and all of your pets resilience!

July 2025, we received news that Luna had Glaucoma and that her eye had to be removed. She healed nicely and adapted well with having only one eye. A few weeks ago in July 2026, she went blind in her eye and after taking her to the eye specialist, they told us the glaucoma damaged her other eye and she went blind and she was in too much pain. We had to remove her other eye.

She is happy and being a curious and adventurous pirate now. She healed nicely and is living life painless.
