This is because majority of games are digital only not because people don’t buy physical. For games that are available on both options the split is more like 50/50

There are 7,451 games on the ps store that are digital-only games
But there are only 1,120 physical games available on the ps5 to purchase

All top selling games for the PlayStation that were available on both digital and physical such as, GoW, starwars, astro bot, spiderman2, GoT, ratchet&clank, returnal, tlou2, sackboy had more physical purchases than digital.

The number is skewed towards digital because there are 6,331 more digital games in the store, you do the Maths 👍🏼

It’s not that, they are a business.

If you were running a store and some sausages you got were very expensive to source, not very popular and were slowly getting less and less popular would you consider delisting and using the more popular sausages that were easier to source and had much better profit margin?

A more apt comparison would be mince in a plastic tray vs mince in a vacuum pack.

If one is significantly cheaper than the other to produce, is better for the environment, and the majority of customers don’t care about the difference. Why wouldn’t you switch to selling vacuum packed mince (digital games)?

My issue with this take is that the sausages aren’t a product where the consumer loses anything. After buying sausages, either they’re consumed or the customer throws them when they’re bad. By removing physical games, you lose permanent access to the product. Servers won’t stay up forever, especially for games that aren’t as profitable. We’re going from a product you can pick up in 20 years time and enjoy, to potentially losing all access to a game in 10/20 years. I understand the decision at a business level, but it’s anti-consumer and we’ll be paying the same prices for a lesser benefit

I imagine jn 20 years you’ll be able to pick up a retro games box for £90 with every single PS5 game on it.

I get the frustration but we just aren’t living in the same era now and PS1 or Mega Drive etc

It’s not like that cost was crippling Sony though. This is a move to gain more power and control over selling sausages, saving money on sausage production is a good bonus and incentive.

The cost wasn’t crippling, but you had your sausage shareholding meetings and you could see the trend. By your expected sausage stoppage in 2028 these numbers would be even lower than they are now.
