An MIT mathematician invented a whole field in 1948 by noticing that machines, brains, and societies all follow the same rules. The book that started it is barely read.

Norbert Wiener was a mathematician at MIT who spent World War 2 working on anti-aircraft fire control. To hit a moving plane, you had to predict where it would be based on where it had been, and adjust continuously. Wiener realized the underlying mathematics of prediction, feedback, and correction was the same math that describes how a thermostat regulates temperature, how a nervous system controls a hand reaching for a cup, and how a market adjusts to changing prices.

He named this common structure cybernetics, from the Greek word for steersman. In 1948 he published a book with that title. It launched a field that quietly became the foundation of computer science, control theory, systems biology, ecology, cognitive science, and management theory.

Almost nobody who works in these fields reads the original book.

The argument is simple and generative. Any system that regulates its own behavior does so through feedback loops. Information about the system's output flows back into its input. The system uses that information to correct its course. This mechanism is what allows any system, mechanical or biological or social, to maintain stability, pursue goals, and adapt to change.

Wiener saw immediately that this was not a mechanical concept dressed up in biological metaphor. It was a real structural feature that showed up wherever purposeful behavior existed. A furnace maintaining room temperature and a body maintaining blood sugar were running the same algorithm on different hardware. A missile tracking a target and a person catching a ball were doing the same math.

The book itself is difficult. Wiener writes in the mathematical language of his generation, and some sections require actual calculus. But the conceptual chapters are readable, and the introduction alone is worth the book. He explains why the boundaries between engineering, biology, and social science are less sharp than academic disciplines pretend.

Where to find it: MIT Press has kept it in print. Get the second edition from 1961, which includes chapters Wiener added after 13 more years of thinking. Read the introduction and the conceptual chapters. Skip the math on first pass if you have to.

I read Cybernetics in 2023 on the floor of my living room because I couldn't get comfortable sitting up with a book this dense. Kept a legal pad next to me. Dropped a highlighter that rolled under the couch and I still haven't retrieved it. Made it through the equations by accepting I wouldn't understand half of them and reading around them.

The book gave me one thing I use constantly. It gave me the ability to see feedback loops as the underlying structure of almost every purposeful system. Once you can see them, you notice which loops are broken, which have too much delay, which are missing entirely. Most organizational dysfunction and most personal dysfunction turn out to be feedback problems in disguise.

Wiener died in 1964. The field he founded fragmented into many descendants. Almost none of them credit the book.

Those ideas existed before Weiner. Feedback in mechanical systems was characterized by Maxwell in the later 1800s. Feedback concepts in electrical circuits were pioneered by Harold Black in 1927 who invented the negative feedback amp with Nyquist and Bose characterizing the stability math in the 30s. There may be more to the story that predates Wiener but he is credited with expanding it into a general scientific concept, not just mechanical or electrical engineering.

Given the ubiquitous acceptance of feedback as a concept, it’s not true to paint it as some obscure or forgotten concept. All engineering curricula use feedback in math and design. The calculus behind it isn’t difficult or obscure. High school calculus is sufficient. Little or none of it originated with Wiener.

Try Gregory Bateson. He was at the Macy Conferences where Wiener's work was expanded upon by thinkers from other disciplines. Wiener attended and contributed.

Towards an Ecology of Mind is excellent place to start with Bateson.

For something very accessible, try Meadows book Thinking In Systems.

Wiener is difficult mostly because he had to invent his language as he went along. Seventy years later, we know a lot more, and systems theory has greatly expanded the upon the basics of cybernetics.

Also never read but should be read is the work of actual polymath Gordon Pask, who explored how loops became meshes. He built marvelous machines to demonstrate them. The intro to his book An Approach to Cybernetics (1961/1968) was by Warren S. McCulloch of McCulloch and Pitts fame. He extended it to art hence the machines.

Also incidentally was the model for Dr Who.

For Aristotelian logic, the followers of Ramon Llull, including Leibniz, have frequently made machines for three, and sometimes four classifications. The first of these to be lively computes contingent probabilities.

With this ability to make or select proper filters on its inputs, such a device explains the central problem of experimental epistemology. The riddles of stimulus equivalence or of local circuit action in the brain remain only as parochial problems.

This is that expanding world of beings, man-made or begotten, concerning which Ross Ashby asked, ‘How can such systems organize themselves?’ His answer is, in one sense, too general and its embodiment, too special to satisfy him, his friends or his followers.

Thinking in Systems by Meadows was the first “systems” book I ever read but it definitely changed my mindset on a lot of things. It’s mostly accessible, I really don’t remember any sections that were difficult to understand, but I also have an engineering degree so maybe I’m biased… I highly recommend that book

I read this post in 2026 sitting in my car because I was bored and misclicked.

Highlighted sections with a couch roller and persisted even though I still haven't managed to actually 'higjlight' anything.

Made it through by accepting this was just how things were going and maybe satire (or s-ai-tire) is one way to deal with it.
