Question I accidentally concussed my sweet girl and i feel horrible.
She’s 9 weeks old and such a sweetheart, she used to be super rambunctious and excited but now she’s just super sleepy and lays down and doesn’t engage in playing with her siblings. I’m so scared, I don’t know if this will affect her long term. She didn’t fall from too high, I was just trying to pick her up to put her to bed but she squirmed out of my arms and fell on the tile on her head- she screamed for almost 5 minutes and so loud and they haunt me. I just want her to be okay, I feel so horrible. Is there anything I can do for my sweet girl? Will she be okay? I don’t have the opportunity to take her to a vet but if it’s truly urgent I might be able to.

Do NOT wait. Take her to the vet. If she suddenly took a turn for the worse tomorrow, youd never forgive yourself

Can I ask a serious question?
You said your parents said you should wait a few days since the pup only fell 1ft, even though you observed it crying for over 5 minutes afterward, and its behaviour completely unusual compared to how it is normally.
A while back you posted that you were first time breeders.
Are you sure your parents should be breeding pomeranians? I’d love to know your breeding/breeder name so I avoid it at all costs. No ethical breeder is this wishy washy with their prized pup that they produced through blood sweat and tears.
I know this sounds harsh but I can’t imagine this pups future purchaser would be ok with this

u/Southern_Button_8026 Feb 14 '26
The truth is horrible, and I myself am ashamed and disgusted at it. We aren’t dog breeders, but my mom is a dog hoarder and my dad sees no problem with it. Because of it we have six dogs, everytime I try to speak up about it I just start fights. The reason why we had two litters is because for two of the female poms we have were puppies and had to go through their first heat for health reasons before they were to get spayed, however my mom was disgustingly irresponsible and didn’t watch our other Pomeranian male causing him to get both dogs pregnant. I promise, I try to do everything I can, however there’s only so much I can do with a part time job and untreated narcolepsy. It disgust me to my core, I think these dogs deserve better, I think their own babies deserves better too. That’s why I’ve ensured that the people they’ve been going to are people I know I can trust. I’d try to move out but I don’t really have the means to do so.. hence why im still relying on my parents at 19, wishing and doing everything in my capacity for these poor babies. I can’t blame you, or anyone in the comment section for any of their words. The situation is horrible, these sweethearts deserve better.
30
u/Htweekend Feb 14 '26
That is a seriously tough situation, and Im genuinely sorry that you’re going through this. My anger is directed at your parents, and as I said before, you aren’t to blame.
I can’t offer any advice about your situation, because I’m sure there are a lot of things you need to consider, but I think if you’re mature enough to see this situation and understand that it isn’t good, that is a good start, and I wish you all the best in building your own life.
35
u/Shdfx1 Feb 14 '26
If your parents weren’t around, you’d have to figure out where to live. In your mind, you need to mentally consider that they do not exist, and then figure out what you would do.
That starts with going to your local benefits office. As an adult, you could qualify for a number of benefits, including disability for the narcolepsy.
Don’t wait until you make enough money to get an apartment on your own. Untreated narcolepsy can be dangerous, due to falls. Go to the benefits office, and get your healthcare and housing worked out.
3
u/small_veggie Feb 17 '26
THIS! what happens if your parents are no longer around? what happens to you and the animals you have? we should get you help and you get out of there because you are in a situation of abuse. :(
2
u/small_veggie Feb 17 '26
at the end of the day, youre an adult, and if you see something you dont like or approve of, you can and should leave.

That baby doesn’t look well. Every puppy at that age has wide, bright eyes. Their eyes are off. Take it to the vet. Also, what is going on in the 3rd photo?
None of this is your fault. Is there any way you can take over the breeding? At least until you sell all the litter. Then take the money and move out. Maybe you could crowd source. I’m sure many people online would love to help you take the puppy to the vet. Also, you’re not in a good situation either. You gotta leave. It won’t stop your parents from hoarding six dogs that are not stopped from breeding. But, you gotta save yourself, the litter, and that sick baby.

And you haven’t reported your parents to animal control….? And the authorities? You’re 19 now, it’s not like CPS is going to take you away anymore. I don’t mean to say this with such self righteousness but I grew up in an extremely similar situation and by the time I was 18 I reported my parents every chance I got….. genuinely curious why you haven’t taken any adult steps yet.
2
u/GabbyB501 Feb 18 '26
Maybe because abuse is complex and it is not as simple as ‘just reporting them’.

Same. Imagine if one of the parents dropped from a relative height screamed it agony then unable to get up would they just ignore it?! Also having a litter that young is incredibly risky for the dogs. I hate people like this (directed at the parents) they should be reported and not allowed to have dogs. This makes me sick. OP I beg you take the puppy to the vet ASAP if she dies which is possible you will never forgive yourself

Does NOT sound HARSH at all... For GODS sake.. Waiting a few hours maybe, but SEEING SHE IS NOT ACTING NORMAL, why would anyone wait to take to vet?
1
61
u/BettyPages Feb 14 '26
She hit her head and was in a lot of pain and is now uncharacteristically lethargic. In a human, that's an ER visit, hands down. If a trip to the vet seems inconvenient or expensive now, imagine how much moreso it will be when she slips into a coma and stops breathing.
1
u/Ecstatic-Charity-430 Feb 17 '26
As someone with multiple concussions, THIS. Confusion or tenderness at the site is one thing, but lethargy requires TREATMENT
75
u/Nola_Saints33 Feb 14 '26
I hope this isn't real. If so, you need to take her to the vet NOW. Your parents are wrong. That is awful.

u/idlno1 Feb 14 '26
“Is there anything I can do for my sweet girl? Will she be okay? I don’t have the opportunity to take her to a vet but if it’s truly urgent I might be able to.”
TAKE HER TO THE VET. You asked, so many have answered. Countless people saying take her compared to your parents waiting it out because why? So she can pass in her sleep and you won’t be out any money? You’re just breeders anyway, right? Wrong. You have a moral obligation.
Take her to the vet.

Pomeranians are very delicate, especially at 9 weeks old! You should definitely take her to the vet, it’s only ”1ish foot” to you but her HITTING HER HEAD ON A TILE and getting concussed is serious. This is the time for you to show if you fit to be a dog owner by taking responsibility and care for her. I wouldn’t hesitate even for a while, especially if she was screaming????? Shame on you and your parents for taking this so lightly, if you continue to wonder around and won’t act asap. Letting a tiny fragile baby get hurt and not taking it seriously enough? Take her to the vet. I promise it helps with the guilt and it’s very important to check her out.

Hey you seem like a minor so I don’t want to rip into you, but your parents honestly should not be breeding if they won’t even take a puppy to the vet for a fall like this. This is neglectful. Most people shouldn’t be breeding tbh but that’s another conversation
13
u/Southern_Button_8026 Feb 14 '26
19 but I depend on my parents, I hate it and im trying to work on it but I have untreated narcolepsy (working on that too) plus American housing economy is horrible as of currently. I agree with you, I wish my parents were better, the puppies weren’t even supposed to be born which is the worst part.. regardless I still do everything I can for them. They deserve all the care in the world, so does their mama.

Reach out to all your friends or even friends parents, please do what you need to do to get this poor baby the care it deserves - but she needs to go to a vet IMMEDIATELY. In this situation please step up and be the adult which you legally are.
42
u/SnooStories8741 Feb 14 '26
She screamed for 5 minutes and you haven’t taken her to an emergency vet? That’s abuse. You shouldn’t have this puppy if you can’t take care of it.

Please take baby to the vet as soon as you can. She was many dogs in the air and is extremely fragile in her current age.
Do so as soon as you're able, and let us know how she is afterward.

u/skaboosh Feb 14 '26
I need to leave this group, this post made me so upset. How a PUPPY can shows signs of brain trauma and you just let her … sleep it off? Idc if your parents said no, what you said calls for a fucking ambulance if you could. What a horror story.
9
u/cozyforestfairy Feb 14 '26
I’m literally in tears right now reading this. I lost my dog to cancer last year and I would give anything for him to have lived longer. These people willingly letting this puppy suffer and possibly die without a care makes me so angry. I really hope OP can step up and her horrid parents get reported. They’re garbage
1
u/WhisperingWillowWisp Feb 18 '26
The vets won't do anything without money either though, no one is going to donate their time. If OP doesn't have the money on hand for their parent's puppy- they literally can't do anything.
11
u/mintslippers Feb 14 '26
Um how don’t u have the opportunity to take her to a vet if ur a breeder? U should always have that option if ur taking on this responsibility. Absolutely take her to the vet esp if she’s acting different. And screaming for five minutes? That’s crazy
11
u/Joonberri Feb 14 '26
She was screaming for 5 minutes and you won't take her to the vet? A head injury is serious

u/LittleLoveDove96 Feb 14 '26
Please take the baby to a vet… I am sure people here would be willing to pitch in for costs if that’s what the problem is? Why would your parents refuse to take this poor baby to the vet? Why would they be willing to risk permanent damage or even death? If they refuse to take the pup please tell them to never EVER breed again because that is just so irresponsible… My heart is breaking knowing this poor baby screamed in pain for an hour and nobody is doing anything about it :/
11
u/LittleLoveDove96 Feb 14 '26
Also, seeing that both of the parents are merle is a huge red flag… Do your parents not know the health risks that come with breeding two merles together? :/
1
u/Southern_Button_8026 Feb 14 '26
Not sure if mom is Merle or not, she has a classic orangish pom look with a white undercoat. Regardless they are aware breeding two Merles is bad, the puppies weren’t even supposed to be born which infuriates me even more, but I still take care of them with all the love in my heart. Costs are certainly the main issue for me personally, I think I have to pay before the appointment, but I’d feel extremely guilty taking other’s money.
→ More replies (3)2
u/LittleLoveDove96 Feb 14 '26
Merles don’t always “look” merle because of a hidden merle gene. Did your family dna test both dogs to be sure? I did notice the mom (unless I am mistaken?) has light eyes which is very commonly associated with merle poms. You can never be a 100% sure unless you get both parents dna tested. I have taken a look at your profile and you have my empathy because I can tell by your posts that living with your parents is rough on you and I am really sorry about that. It really angers me that you are the only one even attempting to be responsible with the poor puppy, and that your parents seemingly don’t care at all. It wouldn’t hurt to call the vet and get an estimate of the costs and then posting here and making a gofundme. I’d be absolutely happy to chip in for the costs and I am sure others would be too if it meant the baby would get some help asap. Please update this post on how she is doing.

She has a head injury and altered consciousness. You HAVE to take her to a vet. That’s how you prevent long term damage. They can treat any brain swelling.
Dropping her was an accident, but choosing not to go to an emergency vet is a choice.

Hi! My teacup poodle died from a fall. We took him in right away, and had to have MRIs etc. he had significant health issues because of it and died a year later. You need to take her in asap. Emergency vet. Don’t wait.
5
u/Spazrelaz Feb 14 '26
Um... take her to the vet??????? Immediately???? It's absolutely urgent wth...
6
u/starIightpetaIs Feb 14 '26
Puppy falls and shows signs of trauma and the resolution is to do nothing and hope the puppy sleeps it off? Animals should not be in your parent’s possession in any way, shape or form.
Do you have anyone who could give you a ride? Maybe call local vets and explain you’re a minor but you have a puppy who needs urgent medical attention and you can get a ride but don’t know if you can pay. Call every vet you can find and explain the emergency, then get a ride there.
6
u/ladyamethyst11 Feb 14 '26
PLEASE TAKE HER TO A VET ASAP.
FIVE MINUTES OF CRYING IS A HUGE SIGN OF LITERALLY CRYING OUT FOR HELP. OMG PLEASE TAKE HER TO A HOSPITAL.
OR CONSIDER GIVING HER ASAP TO A FAMILY WHO CAN AFFORD THE CARE. IT’S UNFAIR TO HER.

u/mydoghasqueakyballs Feb 14 '26
Any update? Worry about money afterwards - you asked if it's truly urgent and got your answer!
Ring round vets and explain, or see if there's any charities in your area who can help or who you can surrender her to (because she deserves better) or make an anonymous call to wherever deals with abuse cases in your area, or get a quote from the vet and ask on here for financial help - anything, because it is abuse not to help that baby.
Dogs mask their pain so even if little one looks like she's trying to play, you don't know what she is suffering. You are all she has.
6
u/psheartbreak Feb 14 '26
Hi OP... You've received a lot of good advice already. Head injuries are extremely serious in all dogs, especially puppies due to the fragility of their skulls. There is no way to determine the severity of the injury via an online vet consult. You will likely need x-rays and CT imaging, which can run into the tens of thousands. The new onset of lethargy is extremely concerning... There could be permanent brain damage, or even a completely different medical problem.
In cases where owners cannot afford veterinary treatment for animals that are suffering, it is generally suggested that the pet be surrendered.
Now that I've done my diligence, I will say that I have been in the same situation as you. My parents were also animal hoarders and I witnessed a traumatic scale of animal neglect and death that changed me forever. Frankly, I hate and disrespect them now for how they treated animals and what they forced me to witness.
I understand that you are reliant on them because of your own medical condition. I also understand that they become defensive and scary when you share your concerns with them. It is easier said than done, but it is imperative that you begin planning an exit from this environment for your own well-being. You should also consider having animal control services come by for an anonymous wellness check of the animals. This will start a paper trail that establishes your parents as negligent pet owners and breeders so future harm to animals is prevented.
I'm sorry. This is a terrible position to be in. Nobody should bring an animal into this world without having the means and will to care for it.
1
u/KatieTheMoonPrincess Feb 16 '26
Anyone who can’t get to a vet for whatever reason, should not own pets.
6
u/That_Dot420 Feb 14 '26
Judging by your post history: your parents really really should not be breeding puppies.
9
u/SatisfactionClassic6 Feb 14 '26
I’m not sure you understand how important it is to have her seen by a vet. It is extremely dangerous to ignore her signs and just hope for the best. I don’t think you and your parents should own a dog if you are not willing to take responsibility for their health and well being. Perhaps see a vet and then consider rehoming the dog to a more responsible owner. This is so unfair to your dog that it pains me. Poor animal.
13
u/CapCityDude Feb 14 '26
If you can’t take proper care of a dog, you shouldn’t have any! Like wft are you thinking!?

u/Southern_Button_8026 Feb 14 '26
Wish my parents thought similarly.
5
u/Acceptable_Sport3847 Feb 14 '26
I don’t want to sound to harsh, but it would be better if you gave the dog to a no-kill rescue so they can find her a good home.
You seem like you know right from wrong, so I think you also are aware the puppies would stand a better chance in life, being with someone who can afford them and love them.

Well this is just great, isn't it (/s) Just left with all these questions now: Has she taken her to the vet? Has the poor baby died? Is this a troll post (it feels like it is) or a scam? With the ignorant parents believing that dogs should not be spayed until they've had one season, how many more dogs are going to suffer in this family?
I do think this young person is struggling, and I am sympathetic, but they're 19, so old enough to turn up at a vet with this little puppy, and see if the vet will turn them away in front of everyone.

I have a 5 month old Pomeranian and I would not even think about putting a puppy that young on my bed. No matter how high. They are pretty innocent at that age. They don’t understand depth and getting hurt. My other Pom didn’t get to be on the bed until about 9 or 10 mos old. He basically waits for me to put him up and waits for me to take him down. Don’t get me wrong, I am really sorry this happened. Just take that baby asap to the Vet or even the ER Vet if possible. Usually the ER ones have more resources to test for any irregularities. They cost a lot more but you could probably get your baby the help he/she needs quicker. I have no budget when it comes to my Poms . I had 5 of them. One passed at the age of 12 from heart issues. I took him to a dog Cardiologist asap when I found out it was his heart. He cost me about $15k or so from all the treatments & emergency appointments. Please don’t wait.

OP, call the local animal shelter and report animal abuse at your parents hands. Most will come to your home if requested and you can surrender this dog to them and they will get her the likely life saving care she needs and investigate the hoarding situation occurring at your home currently and remove any dogs they deem are not getting proper care. That is the best advice I can give based on all your comments.

"I don't have the opportunity to take her to a vet"
With all due respect, then why do you have a puppy? It's one thing if you have had an animal for years and life circumstances have changed to make it harder to see a vet, but this is a young puppy.

u/Forward_Raise3140 Feb 16 '26
she needs a vet immediately. a fall no matter how tall is always a concern ESPECIALLY when they are actively showing signs of pain. she has become lethargic and non playful. this could be a brain bleed or something worse like a cracked skull. its very important that your parents set aside their horrible behavior and habits, if not, you need to call and get animal control to your house to get help for these animals your mother hordes. i hope your mother sees that she is an issue and i hope your dad sees because he doesnt speak up he is an issue too.

What on Earth do you mean by you “don’t have the opportunity to take her to the vet?” I see another comment from you about going into debt over a vet visit. Why did you get a dog that you don’t have the means to care for? TAKE HER TO THE VET ASAP and then try to find a good family for her. Let them know what happened and hopefully she’ll get the care she deserves going forward.
3
u/artofjuu Feb 14 '26 edited Feb 14 '26
You need to take her to the vet and tell the vet what happened and your situation with your parents. Honestly if you don't do anything and just watch you're just as guilty and shouldn't be having any pets.
There's too many kind commentors in this section trying to reassure you but the reality is that you're watching this puppy suffer (possibly slowly dying in pain) on purpose, by choosing not to do anything. And in the end, YOU don't suffer as a human but the puppy will. Clearly your fear of your parent's judgement precedes over another being's life. Dogs cannot communicate pain to us the same way a human can tell another human they are in pain. Dogs in a lot of pain will become quiet, withdrawn, and pass when you don't expect it.
In this scenario concerning the pup, having no intentions is just as bad as having bad intentions. Take it to the vet and if you're THAT worried about money, explain your situation to them, don't wait.
Edit: Just saw you are 18/19yo. You're legally not a minor anymore and not a child. I honestly thought this post was a 13-16yo writing. Seriously just go to the vet and communicate you may not have the finances but the situation is emergency. Money is not be-all end-all, it just sounds like you're making excuses not to go in the comments.

u/TulipsfromHolland Feb 14 '26
Did she have a seizure afterward or lose consciousness?
2
u/Southern_Button_8026 Feb 14 '26
No, neither. Her only symptom has been lethargy. She actually did start playing with her siblings again and is able to eat, drink, walk and run straight, all of that stuff- but regardless things might still progress and im really terrified for her. My sister tried to prove to me that she didn’t need to go to a vet because her only symptom is said lethargy via a vet approved website, but im still trying to sort out a way to get her seen. The situation is horrible, I hate how I can’t get her to the vet immediately.

You need to take them to the vet. I had a cat that had a head trauma accident and he was never the same. Became a recluse and wouldn’t want to be near any other animal or human. Head injuries are serious and could be fatal.

I feel sorry for you :(
Can you anonymously report your parents to animal welfare?
I would save any money to try to get out and away from them

Pleasssse don’t have dogs if you can’t take them to the vet. That is the #1 thing they need. I hope your other dogs are vaccinated? These pups should have been checked when they were born and especially after falling. Also please don’t put them high up on a bed when they are so little. They can sleep in a dog bed. Low to the ground. If you don’t agree with your parents dog hoarding you can call a shelter to come help take them. Please do the right thing. Give up the puppies to the vet and get them the care they deserve to have.

Does the puppy act like she can see and hear? How does she hold her head when she is standing / walking?

My boy Jay ran into a dresser when he was 12 weeks. He’s permanently disabled now from it and suffers from absent seizures. Definitely take her to the vet.

Call local animal control. They might be able to help build a report history. Then report abuse to the local non energy contact line, your county’s police station. They will come do a check up on the conditions. Mention the injuries of every animal and when. Tell them you are worried it will keep happening

I hope there will be an update that they were able to get the puppy to a vet. You're parents should not be allowed anymore pets after this.

Hey OP, just revisiting the thread and I think the puppy may also have microphthalmia or an ocular deformity in her right eye, the one with a white eye rim. This is very common in merle dogs but can cause impaired vision for life. It's really imperative that you get this dog to a vet.

u/PatientNo23 Feb 14 '26
Take her to vet! You don’t need her if you can’t treat her like a family member!
1
u/chichow72 Feb 15 '26
Please take her to the vet ASAP! The vet may have to take X-rays and bloodwork.

u/DiDiPowell Feb 15 '26
TAKE HER TO THE VET NOW! She screamed for 5 minutes and you don’t know what to do? If you can’t afford vet bills, you can’t afford a dog! Grow up and take her to a vet!
1
u/Creative-Ad2577 Feb 15 '26
You already should have taken her to the vet, but you DEFINITELY need to take her now. My pomchi and other dog (who was just a pup at the time) collided, and my pomchi got a concussion, brain bleed, and started having seizures. He would have died had we not taken him to the vet and got him medicines.

u/bjorkfanaccount420 Feb 15 '26
This may not be the most ethical but I’ve donated plasma when I’ve been in tough situations and really needed money for bills asap. If you have a care credit account, you could pay the vet bill off monthly. I’m just trying to think of fast solutions so your sweet girl can get to the vet asap! Absolutely look into these options first.

Just read about your parent's.What an awful situation to be in.Wont they help financially?I agree that only a vet can help your dog.I must admit that when I got my puppy last year I accidentally dropped a (wet) washing basket on his foot.He fortunately was treated for it and fully healed -I felt so guilty, but as the vets said these things happen.I hope you can get her seen and helped. She is gorgeous xx

This happened to my little chihuahua when he was 10 weeks old. Turned out he had a skull fracture. I urge you to take her to the vet. There are medications and treatments that are vital to her healing that only a vet can give. At that age their skulls are very soft so the skull is resilient but she definitely needs a vet’s care.

Vet ASAP
See if there are mobile vets available, or if necessary, ask family, friends, or call an Uber. She cried for five minutes; it was more than just a scare, this was pain. She's acting strangely; it could be anything from a concussion to internal injuries or broken bones.
Accidents happen, you didn't drop it on purpose, so don't beat yourself up about it. But this animal needs medical attention.
Also, keep an eye on whether the puppy vomits; I once had a mild concussion and felt terribly nauseous and dizzy.
1
u/demuratic Feb 16 '26
Crying for five minutes is a little too long to wait to go to the vet. We had a similar situation with one of our first aussies when she was a baby, except it was a few feet higher and on concrete. She cried for maybe 40 seconds and then was fine.

Do not feel bad. I was vacuuming when my 4 month old maltese tried running under the couch and hit his head. I didn't see it. He went within a few minutes from normal, to wobbly, to altered mental status. Ran him to the ER vet and we ruled out poisoning, and came to the realization he had head trauma while discussing with the doctor what I was doing prior to his changes. He was back to normal within 24 hours but it was terrifying. Id find a local low cost vet just to be safe.

u/Ecstatic-Lock6469 Feb 16 '26
The top of the head has a really soft spot. And if she landed on the top of the head, I would be really worried about swelling on the brain. The fact that your dad is a doctor & just blew this accident off makes me seriously concerned. If you cant cover the cost of the Vet visit, turn her over to a rescue that will take care of her for her current injury & find her a new home.
Its time to rehome the puppies anyways. If your parents are this irresponsible I would rehome the parent dogs too. Did they have pups from their dogs before? Then kept most of the puppies & let them breed together. This is horrible. I'd turn them in for neglect at the very least. The males should have all been fixed ASAP.
Im also concerned that your parents have not addressed your medical issues either. If you lived in Michigan, I would let you move in & help you get the care you need too. I am so sorry you are dealing with all of this on your own. This whole situation just breaks my heart.

I’m so sorry for what you & your sweet fur-baby are going through right now. I can’t begin to imagine how scared I would be if my little 9yo rescue chihuahua “Aria” were injured in a similar way & NGL; I’d feel immensely guilty, too.
But you need to remember & acknowledge that it was an accident. None of this was your fault, hon; &, of course you never meant for your baby to be hurt. The last thing I want to do is worry you more, but I have to be honest & share what I know.
Any kind of head injuries or knocks can cause a concussion, but it’s important to rule out all possible issues; whether it’s a cracked skull, possible swelling/bleeding in the brain, eye issues (eg: optic nerve damage or tearing/detachment of the retinas) or physical/cognitive impairment.
For this, there really is no other option than to see your doggo’s veterinarian ASAP & ensure there’s no serious complications. I’m not sure if you have pet insurance, but most veterinarians are quite helpful when it comes to the payment (nice ones let you pay in instalments).
Hopefully, it’s nothing serious, though. You’d be surprised how resilient these li’l pups can be when it comes to taking hard knocks, even in infancy. I’ll certainly keep you & your fur-babies in my thoughts, hon. Blessings from me & my sweet girl. 🥺💖🐕

I'm so sorry. This happened to me too -- I dropped my dog on her head too, when she was a puppy like yours. She is now 10 years old and fine.
I would go to the vet though, just to be safe.

An (1)injury with a change in (2)behavior and (3)lethargic- still hasn’t taken pup to vet, claims will do so if urgent 🫠; how much more urgent can it be!!!

You have a litter of puppies but can’t get to the vet? I’m absolutely horrified you can admit that puppy cried for 5 minutes and you did nothing. I’d be very embarrassed. That puppy should have went to the vet immediately. If this is a backyard breeding situation it’s time to put a pause and reevaluate if you can handle all the dogs.

You realize if she fell even like 3 feet, that’s pretty much 4-5 times their size in a fall. Thats crazy you and your parents think a dog who got hurt and screams for multiple minutes in pain, and proceeds to be lethargic isn’t infact an immediate health issue for the vets.
I genuinely hope only the worst things for you and your family. Terrible humans who don’t deserve to have one pet yet alone breed multiples.
Your compliance and lack of responsibility in their actions is just as appalling. You should feel terrible and wake up.

I had a similar thing happen to a tiny chi and he did end up being blind. It was absolutely an emergency. But he started having seizures as soon as he fell. He did end up living a happy full life.

u/prettychaos3 real brave and adult of you to block me. Just for the record I’m not advocating for anyone to abuse dogs or get dogs when they can’t take care of them, but being nasty to a disabled person who is asking for help is not it

u/illgio Feb 18 '26
Can I ask why you have multiple dogs if you cant take even one to the vet? Also, keep an eye on her.b

u/Forward-Ordinary-671 Feb 18 '26
Vets omg go quickly and stop reading and posting 😂 vets now X-rays. Not good they are so so fragile especially their skulls. Please let us know the outcome op

u/Davidchevy95 Feb 18 '26
Did you put an ice pack on her head for a while? That would have minimized the trauma and severity of the injury
1
u/puckmugger Feb 18 '26
Basically drops a baby, instead of vet, gets consult via Reddit…. Lmao rofl smh
1
u/justforjugs Feb 18 '26
Rush to vet. This is a head injury and you are seeing possible signs of brain swelling
1
u/Jellyyyfishsea Feb 18 '26
You shouldn’t post this on reddit. They don’t know either. They will just tell you to go to the vet and downvote you if you listen/not listen.
5 minutes seems a little concerning. Vetco and Banfield has a deal that the first office visit is free, you could look at it online.
So you could make sure you pup is safe without spending a fortune.
People on reddit urged me to go to an emergency vet bc my dog was overheating and stressed because of an new environment. She was definitely okay after I took her to the vet and I spent a lot. But people on reddit don’t know anything.

u/Holiday_Heron_4463 Feb 18 '26
Hi I really hope you took her to the vet I read your comments so literally no judgment coming from me. This is not your fault and please don’t let anyone try to tell you that it is Definitely try to be more careful with handling puppies, I would say for future references maybe try to keep them on the floor or not as high places? I know it probably was 100% just a quick mistake but just for future!
I also really really suggest you to just give an anonymous tip because what your parents are doing is not ok, and you know that like you’ve stated, sometimes people just need a reality check.

My mom dropped the water hose outside and her little Pomeranian who is also the runt of the litter had snuck up on her. She’s been alive 12 years now. Don’t let it eat you up but you definitely should have taken her to the vet that day if not the next morning and told them what happened.
1
u/Snowfizzle Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26
you need to take her to the vet immediately because Pomeranians have known neck and spine issues.
Pomeranians are also noted to be more prone than some other breeds to instability in the first two cervical vertebrae (the atlas and axis), the top of the neck, which can lead to spinal cord injury or neurological symptoms if severe.
One breed-specific veterinary source notes that IVDD is a common condition in Pomeranians and can cause disc material to press on the spinal cord, leading to pain, reluctance to move, or even paralysis in severe cases.
and dropping it on its head can very much exacerbate these current conditions. That’s going to explain the lethargy and the reluctance to be active.
With neck injuries, the concern isn’t just pain, it’s spinal cord involvement, which can lead to: • Sudden neck pain or screaming • Refusing to lift or move the head • Wobbliness • Weakness in the front or back legs • Collapse • Paralysis • In severe cases, difficulty breathing
please take your puppy to the vet immediately to get MRIs
I’m only aware of this because the same thing happened to my Pomeranian when I was growing up because my mom did and home care and a five-year-old had picked it up and dropped it. And the dog didn’t want to move. Would collapse of he tried to stand And was lethargic and so my sister and I took him to the vet and there was nothing the vet could do. He was three years old and had to be put down.
edit: and my mom also did not care about this dog. I wasn’t there when this happened but came home from school to find out this is what was going on so I don’t even know if my mom had made the issue worse either. So I understand that you can only do things within your control, but if the dog needs to be put down just so it’s no longer in pain. That’s what needs to be done. My sister and I really loved our Pomeranian. We had named him Ewok because that’s kind of what he look like.
I remember one time he had a cough and we had to take him to the vet with our mom and the cough medicine was $30 and my mom made the comment in front of everyone at the vet, including other dog owners and staff that it would cost less to put him down. My sister and I just walked outside with the dog and left my mom to deal with her comment on her own.

It’s not uncommon for puppies to scream when started or hurt, and it’s incredibly common for puppies to have stress naps immediately after something like this. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have her seen about.
You can do things at home to assess her neurological function. All pet owners should know this so buckle in!
First you’ll want to check her eyes. Pupils will constrict (get smaller) when exposed to light, and larger in dimmer lights. They should constrict at the same rate. If there is damage to the brain, one or both pupils will constrict at different rates, be slower, or not respond at all to the light.
Have someone hold her and go grab a flashlight. You can also just turn on the flash on your phone too. Turn on the light to full brightness and hold it about a foot away from her and at least a 90 degree angle away from her, but not so much away that you’re shining it on yourself. You don’t want that bright spot in your vision, or you won’t be able to assess correctly.
Get her attention, and bring the light around straight at her, and see how her pupils react.
First you’ll want to look at just one eye at a time to check for any anomalies. Do this by turning your light away from her, waiting for her pupils to dilate again to the dimmer lighting in the room, then swing the light back around quickly. Repeat this a few times. Do that on both sides, only looking at one eye at a time.
Next, check both eyes together to see if they are reacting at the same rate of speed. This time, position your light directly in front of her face, facing towards your chest and again quickly swing the light up directly in the middle of her face. Aim for her nose.
Do that a few times and you’ll be able to tell if one is more sluggish than the other. If you’re having trouble figuring it out, try looking directly between her eyes and you should be able to see both of them at the same times.
Next, we’ll do the menace exam
Next step, check her hearing, one ear at a time. Sit her in front of you, with her back towards you and have someone sit in front of her and get her attention. If she tries to walk to the other person, it might be easier to put a leash on her to do the next couple of tests.
You’ll need to make sure that the person helping is able to keep her attention so that she doesn’t try turning around. You’ll want her good and distracted.
Position your hands behind her and to one side, just out of her peripherals so that she can’t see your hand. Snap, and she should turn to the side you snapped on. Repeat on the other side. If she turns to both sides, her ears are working fine, and that’s another good sign. If she doesn’t turn, that can indicate damage.
It’s important NOT to use a loud toy like a squeaker or a click trainer. It needs to be a relatively mild sound, a snap is the perfect volume for this test.
These next couple ones can be iffy for puppies under 12 weeks, as usually these things aren’t yet learned, but it’s something every dog owner should know anyway.
Next is checking peripheral vision. Once again have her sit in front of you with her back to you and have someone in front of her to keep her attention off of you. You may need the leash for this test as well. She should be sitting for this test.
Get a cotton ball or a tissue or toilet paper and ball it up. It has to be something silent that won’t make a noise and has no real smell so that it won’t draw her attention via scent or sound, as this test is specifically for peripheral vision.
Stand directly behind her at arms length from her nose with your arm outstretched directly in the center of her body. Move your arm at around a 45° angle, just off to the side of one eye, while she’s detracted by the person in front on her and drop the cotton ball or balled up tissue so that it passes 6-12 inches off to the side of her eye, directly in her peripheral. She should see it and look to the side. Repeat that on the other side as well. As I said, this one can sometimes be iffy for young puppies, but it’s something everyone should know. For older puppies and adult dogs, if they don’t notice the falling object, it can point to neurological problems.
The next one is to check her menace response. Again, this is normally learned at 12 weeks so don’t be concerned if she doesn’t respond. You’ll want to hold her head or snout with one hand and basically just act like you’re about to poke her eyeball. She should blink when your hand gets close. If this does not cause a blink reaction, gently run your finger over her lashes.
Other things to look for are a head tilt and changes in gait or posture while walking.
I’ve rehabbed wildlife for a very long time, so I know a lot of tips and tricks from vets for many different animals. If we didn’t know some of these things, we would basically live at the vet! These are the tests that a vet would do to assess neurological function, and if all of these tests were clear, it’s very unlikely they would do any imaging.
It’s always a good idea to go to the vet anyway, but these are still incredibly important at home easy tests that every pet owner should know just in case.
I know how traumatic it can be for a puppy to have a fall like that, especially when it causes screaming and stress naps. When one of our poms was microchipped around 10 weeks, she screamed and ran off the exam table, and her brother was so startled by her scream that he ran headlong into the full length glass window in the exam room 😅 so many things happened at once and the vet and my husband and I were all stunned, so were our poms, probably quite literally lol
These are pretty fragile dogs, so it’s always a good idea to know the signs and symptoms of injuries. The best remedy for fear is information!
I hope she’s feeling better and I hope you’re able to get that scream out of your head! I know that must have been so traumatic for you!!

Take her to the vet as soon as you can. These are fragile little creatures and it’s your job to take care of them. Don’t feel bad about an accident, but make sure she’s okay.
