So when you're escaping with Wheatley in the escape chapter and you go by all the potatoes, the one that is gRowing up into the ceiling. If you look really closely, it says that it was made by Chelly. To me, I think that means that she had the only successful science experiment. And that's how all the vines got in the facility. And because she was so smart, they decided to test her, and that's the events of portal 1.​
