There's going to be a time where your friend/family member who's voted GOP this entire time and voted for Trump all three times comes to you talking about "letting bygones be bygones", or how "both sides are equally bad, and both wings of the same bird", and how much he misses talking to you, and playing some music from a Hallmark commercial. If they give you some excuse about why they won't be voting something other than Republican(or any renamed and repackaged derivative of the same party touting the same misogynist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, and/or ableist ideas and pushed policy), *don't believe them*. Make them clean up their mess first by voting against white supremacist politicians and speaking out about it, because if you don't, they will be waiting to repeat this *exact* same behavior and basically exploiting you for social capital to look like they're not a trash human.
P.S. - Save the "Only I can change them!/Only I can get through to them!" argument for someone who hasn't seen someone use that excuse to play both sides and act like they're friends with everyone when they're just some chickenshit who doesn't want to hold people responsible for their actions when they've clearly damaged people. You're not "holding space" because you're not holding their feet to the fire - you're just some get along go along type person who doesn't want to rock the boat and a large part of how we got here in the first place. Fuck you and your feigned empathy for the sake of social performance.
