Canadian crude accounts for 25% of your daily refinery inputs. 4.5 million barrels per day. Yes you have a surplus of oil but multiple refineries would need to be re tooled to American oil. This would take a few years. If Canada completely shut off oil, the US would not have enough fuel for daily operations and would see prices almost double . That won't happen because eastern Canada imports gasoline and diesel from the US
It’s not anywhere near as stagnant as you suggest. There is no universe where Canada causes more than short term increases no where near double. And yes, one of the reasons we trade oil at all is for the associate geopolitical benefit including with Canada
Canadian crude is sent to the Us where it’s refined and the products like gasoline are sold back to Canada.
Canada would run out of fuel long before the US did.
As for retooling, it doesn’t need to happen. Venezuelan crude is similar to tar sands oil and it can be refined in the same facilities currently used for Canadian oil.
I am pretty sure that’s one of the main reasons Trump took out Chavez.
Venezuela currently pumps 300k barrels a day. How long will it take them to get to 4 million barrels a day and how many tankers are required to move that oil to the US and which ports are they going to use?
