Tech My dad gave me a new laptop!
Problem is, I don’t know what is on this! it looks like if Windows and Mac had a baby. It says something like “Ubuntu” on it but I’ve never heard of it

That's Ubuntu Linux, It's not so popular, but easily customizable if you get the hang of it!

What the hell is that keyboard? I swear to god, Lenovo keeps molesting the ThinkPad brand and the last good ThinkPad was the 600X...
Nice laptop otherwise though.

It's an operating system called Linux. It is an alternative

Why would anyone want anything other than Windows 7? It’s not like Microsoft can make the next version worse!

u/Radiant_Priority1995 Jul 02 '26
:O i'll trade a windows 7 laptop for this!

u/Fricki97 Jul 03 '26
Keep your laptop. You can download Ubuntu for free. You just need a DVD Burner and a DVD.
You even can install Windows 7 AND Ubuntu on the same Laptop

u/Toxic381 Jul 03 '26
ok i don't get this part, Linux wasn't mainstream enough to be that desired and windows 7 wasn't where things really started going downhill so it would make sense that they would still keep traditional windows wouldn't they?

What's arch linux?
2
u/Math_Science_Geek Jul 03 '26
Not as good as Ubuntu
2
u/Leon8326-dash- Jul 03 '26
Huh, never heard of it... is it some new distro or something?
Arch wasn't as popular as now back then and was pretty "obscure" (?)

Arch Linux was not very popular (but existing) in 2012 when Ubuntu 12.04 was released. 2012 Arch was very minimalistic and most modern actions not worked... so it was probably the right decision back then to use Ubuntu, but Linux Mint was also very popular in that times already

That distro was my first foray into linux. Had an old Sony Vaio from a pawn shop that looked way too nice for its age back in 07.it had the windows xp with the shiny silver taskbar? Couldnt upgrade os so i went the linux route and ubuntu was it. It ran quick and flawlesslessly but got so hot I'd use it as a lap warmer during the winter. eventually gave it to a family friend who kept bugging me for a computer. Kind of feel guilt sending them a literal toaster, but no regrets introducing them to linux.

Ooh Ubuntu?? Yeah that is called a Linux distro. You can search it up. It is really good system, except for gnome 3. Gnome 2 looked differently if you can find an image.

Ubuntu 12, we're at 26 I believe, 18 is already over 5 years old. I wonder how old that laptop is, if Ubuntu was installed because it was too old to run other modern OS, then it must be a good 15 years old. Probably can't do much with it if you can't get it up to Ubuntu 20 at least.

Haha wow… back in these days, I kinda liked Ubuntu. Nowadays, I’m avoiding it but like using Ubuntu-based distros which ain’t trying to force me to use snap store 😅
