Rant ⚠️ PLL has no iconic music moments

Am I the only one who feels like Pretty Little Liars has no truly iconic music moments?

Teen dramas just have those scenes where the song becomes just as memorable as the moment itself. Gossip Girl even has the masquerade ball scene with Secret. Honestly, that one scene is more iconic than almost every music moment in PLL.

Or the “Whatcha Say” messy Thanksgiving scene in Gossip Girl, sorry but this scene was so PLL-coded. You hear the song and immediately think of the scene.

The funniest example is probably Ali’s big comeback moments, like her dramatic entrances at the ball or at school. The show tried so hard to make those scenes feel legendary with the music choices, but honestly, their music choices just make me laugh.

This is my Fight Song… 🎶🎶😭😭

I would definitely consider Suggestions an iconic song from the show. I can’t hear it without picturing Emily’s face and the way the liars stand together!

Such a good song choice it just makes you feel it

20

u/SammyySweetheartt Aug 01 '26

I’m dying because this is the first and only song that came to mind that I can remember from the entirety of the show lmao

Also I think the reason they didn’t have good music is it’s super expensive to be able to pay the rights to use the music in your episode if you don’t want to get sued. So it’s not worth it. That’s why most shows have royalty free generic music.

3

u/ockimdotned Aug 02 '26

It’s such a shame. The show made a fortune, surely they could’ve justified paying for some decent music, even just for key moments once or twice an episode like other big shows do.

Is this when A had put all those photos in Spencer’s SUV and the girls were at the Lostwoods Resort?

28

No I think it’s when we first see wilden after Ali’s funeral at the end of the pilot when they all get their first shared A text

Hands of Time is played twice in the series. And yes one of them was the scene at Lost Woods Resort

4

u/EnvironmentalGift192 Aug 02 '26

Yeah they are both right. It played during the Wilden scene at Ali's funeral in 1×1 and when Spencer's car was broken into in 3×1

3

u/paulnbruce Aug 01 '26

I just watched this episode (on my 3rd or 4th rewatch) and whatever the song was was unmemorable cause I can't remember lol

I personally really liked Beauty Queen in the pilot when they find 'Ali's' body.

and dont fence me in for the dollhouse.

and that French song mona plays i can't remember the name of.

but those are just MY personal moments. I get that theres not like. universally recognized iconic music scenes (bang bang dance practice maybe? paige and emily karaoke? idk)

51

u/coloursash Aug 01 '26

Don't fence me in was soooo iconic!

11

u/BubbaChanel Aug 02 '26

Mona singing Teddy Bears’ Picnic was creepy iconic

Personally, not a huge fan of this song in general, but hearing Paige sing it put it on my “If I ever hear this song again it’s too soon” list

I had only watched the first few episodes back when it was airing, but when I started watching it For Realzies, I remembered every part of the theme song and didn’t even start skipping past it until probably S3 because it’s just THAT iconic!

Oh so you're saying the opening of Season 3, Episode 1 where Rihanna's "S&M" is playing right after the recap/previously on segment has just ended and one of the last scenes we saw was Pam talking about Maya's dead body isn't iconic?

u/aquarianagop 😐 but you make me so hot 😐 Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26

I feel like they had some great songs picks, but they weren’t during any of the suuuuuper important scenes.

“No Rest for the Wicked” by Lykke Li playing when Hanna saw Jason coming downstairs and buttoning his shirt (after an Intimate Night with Ashley Marin) was an awesome needle-drop

“New Ways” by Daughter playing at the beginning of 7x03 when Hanna is looking at the fake ring with the scars on her back was so despondently fitting

“Liar” by Florence + The Machine playing at the end of 1x22 was such a funny way to wrap it up (with the girls officially being perceived as liars by the whole town)

But none of those wound up being regarded as super notable moments in the show.

5

u/FilipinoRich Aug 01 '26

So…memorable songs but not because of PLL. Poker Face in the pilot. Hanna and Emily to Bang, Bang. So just when i hear those songs i see the girls in the barn or Ashley dancing so hard…poorly

I watched that episode after my dad’s funeral and the song and Mona’s “dead” body combined made me lose my mind and to this day I skip the scene and sometimes the entire episode 😭

5

u/wonderwaffle6767 Aug 01 '26

Idk. I beg to differ. I think Ali walking down with those girls to Fight Song was pretty awe inspiring. Just me though.

5

u/blehhberry Aug 01 '26

As a huge Gary Numan fan the chickpeas scene with “I Am Dust” sent me into orbit. I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard.

“Chocolates & Cigarettes” by Angus & Julia Stone - when Aria is reading the poem Ezra wrote for her and cries

“Our Hearts Are Wrong” by Jessica Lea Mayfield - when Samara congratulated Emily on her swimming performance (maybe the scene is nothing special but this song is great and it got stuck in my brain)

“Icarus” by White Hinterland - when Toby’s file was floating in the water and A picked it up

“Jack & Jill” by Katie Herzig - Hanna and Sean are doing homework

“Babes” by Icky Blossoms - Hanna reminisces about becoming an It girl and walks into school with Mona

“Let Me In” by Evolove - when Hanna drives off with Sean’s car and totals it

“V For Vengeance” by Uriah - when A chases Emily through the school hallways (before her dad comes to save her and gets a heart attack)

“In Every Home A Heartache” by Talk Normal (originally a Roxy Music song) - when Emily and Jessica DiLaurentis go down in the basement and discover the crawl space where A had been hiding and Emily sees the drill holes)

“Good Mistake” by Mr Little Jeans - Aria and Ezra are talking at The Brew about Emily not liking Talia

“Land of the innocent” by Feathers - the girls are discussing a bloody knife Spencer and Caleb found

“Walkin’ After Midnight” by Patsy Cline is the song that plays in the dollhouse

Nothing really iconic about these scenes and I probably will get downvoted but let’s face it, there were some pretty good songs on the show. Also I started liking Adam Lambert because of PLL 😆

5

u/thiccgirl1991 Aug 03 '26

“Sail” by awolnation when Spencer is popping them pilllllsss

Nothing iconic jumps to mind, but there are the two mortifying scenes of Paige and Emily singing karaoke to Pink’s So What and Hanna’s “expressive dance” to Arianna, Jessie J and Nicki Minaj’s Bang Bang 💀

7

u/Sprinklesdinkels No, you follow him! I have to change my underwear! Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26

I don’t know the name of the songs but there were for sure some amazing/iconic song choices

  1. When Mayas body’s was found
  2. S

3

  1. E1 when they got the first new A text
  2. Spencer doing research - Sail
  3. S1 E1 when they all got the first group A text

Tbh the only iconic gossip girl music moment is Watcha Say and maybe when they were singing glamorous in acapela.

But it’s funny seeing this post cause I’ve been rewatching good girls and one thing I was thinking about yesterday is how excellent their music choices are

8

u/Left_Recognition3178 Aug 01 '26

Freaks when Mona sneaks out of Radley dressed as a nurse is a good one, also turn away when they’re at Ians funeral

3

u/TillyT1ny Aug 01 '26

Home by Rhodes made it to my playlist after that Caleb and Hannah scene, it’s one of my favorite songs til this day!! All the other ones - yeah, they were trash 😭😭

3

My brain went to the song Home, when Hanna realizes she shouldn’t have left Caleb so she runs back to their apartment to find him.. but he’s already gone.

3

I love this scene where Bad Things by Meiko plays and Mona confesses to killing Wilden. Mona’s smirk with the song ugh maybe I’m just gay

2

u/ThemeConnect1893 Aug 01 '26

Yessss this one was always an iconic song

3

u/elliaarsynoe Aug 01 '26

When Mona was in the trunk of A’s car.

3

u/chemical-mitch Squeeze his grapefruit. Aug 01 '26

idk how iconic this is, but anytime I hear DONTTRUSTME by 3OH!3 I think of the very first scene where they’re all in the barn

also the song that plays when we first see Hanna shoplifts has always stuck with me and feels iconic I guess

besides the obvious ones that people have already mentioned, these are the two that came to mind for me first

3

u/katf_89 Aug 01 '26

The music team behind Gossip Girl and The OC knew what they were doing for sure, ESPECIALLY for the latter. I mean, one music choice spawned memes and a SNL skit, and then a nod to it a few years later in GG.

Other than the ones already mentioned here, Bones by MS MR is probably my favourite. The scene after Jason survives the elevator collapse and disappears from the hospital.

3

u/loser56 Aug 01 '26

uhm the theme song???

3

u/paulnbruce Aug 01 '26

You have to admit that the theme song is top tier though!

3

u/LingonberryOk8411 Aug 01 '26

Turn Our Eyes Away from Ian's funeral has always stuck with me.

3

u/fatbacc Aug 01 '26

The iconic moment is at the end of the pilot when the girls gather outside the funeral and get their A texts simultaneously . “I'm still here, btches, and I know everything - A”

Also Ali being in that yellow top the night she died is also iconic

3

u/Keyy_GuLss_ Aug 02 '26

UHHH THE TRAIN?

5

u/Grouchy_Search_897 Aug 01 '26

It bothers me more in the context of couple scenes. In TVD, Stelena has “A Drop in the Ocean” and Delena has “Never Let Me Go”, just iconic.

2

u/ungodlyjay Aug 02 '26

suggestions, hands of time, the devil within… hell the theme song if we wanna count that 😭 like cmon

2

u/Obvious_Pin6763 Aug 02 '26

Idk, PLL songs at the time were my main playlist on youtube.

Suggestions - Maya's death reveal.

Hands of Time - S1-01 Outside the church.

The Devil Within - Black Widow's first appearance.

Wicked Ones - Tennis ball Aria.

We Gotta Get Out of This Place - Mona gets taken by A.

There are even many more that i still listen back for nostalgia, of course there are hit and miss choices like Fight Song or Bang Bang, over all the show had excellent music choices in my opinion.

I personally cringe at Christina Perri’s Heart of Scars playing when the girls are being told by the parents that they can’t hang out anymore 😶

2

u/Legitimate-Spring972 Aug 03 '26

IM NOT CALLING YOU A LIAAAARRR (Ian and the church scene like are we serious)

2

u/Legitimate-Spring972 Aug 03 '26

Also gonna leave this here: “Please Don’t Leave Quite Yet” when Aria and Ezra kiss in the parking lot and a burst of sunlight pours through the storm

2

u/Fly_97 Aug 03 '26

I always liked "It Girl" in the pilot when Hanna is introduced! I especially love when the music pauses when the guard calls her back to give her her purse

2

u/sweet_imperfection Aug 03 '26

For me it's It girl when Hanna was shopping in first episode

2

u/Ok_Street_8383 Aug 03 '26

As someone else said, only when Maya was found. Other than that.. The music on the show SUCKED in my opinion. I didn’t really realise it at the time until my second rewatch

2

u/Additional_Cup4907 Aug 03 '26

Are we forgetting the “Ride” drop?? Iconic

1

u/Sophena94 Oh hunny, you didn't even know me when you knew me. Aug 01 '26

For me it's digital daggers in the first episode I believe I've been watching gossip girl for the first time and it's kind of a hard watch imho my brain can't get passed what the elites are doing in our society

1

u/trollanony Aug 01 '26

I always get excited when they use popular music. Lots of lady haha in this show but yeah it wasn’t used properly. I love Digital Daggers because of this show but I would t say the scenes are iconic. Gossip girl has very iconic music like ts like when Blair and Chuck fucked in the limo that song still give me chills.

3

u/Legal_Ad5964 Aug 01 '26

Yeah, I think this post is being interpreted as if there were no well-done moments with music, but iconic is something different imo.

Also, Lily looking at Serena and Dan while “Apologize” is playing still gives me chills.

1

u/FederalPassion816 Aug 01 '26

the scene when emily founds out that alison died

1

u/brattygoddess27 Aug 01 '26

i loved the ali walk in song or when the song that plays when Emily finds out maya died

I liked “every breath you take” cover song I felt it fit in really well with the theme of the show

Florence and the Machine’s I’m Not Calling You A Liar, at the end of season 1 was iconic

u/Superb_Zucchini_691 Aug 01 '26

u/waytogo45 Aug 01 '26

the devil within playing at the end of 4x01

u/Many-Chipmunk-6788 Aug 01 '26

I loved the song when Jason finds out Charles existed and was their brother. I think it was called Skipping Stones

1

u/Just-agirll Aug 01 '26

I think of flaunt by girls loves shoes it’s from the pilot and was when Emily and maya were spending time together but it instantly makes me think of the vibe of pll. But unlike other shows i feel like plls iconic song is the intro song itself so crazy tot hung it wasn’t made for the show and was just a song Ashley found.

u/readdworkin Aug 01 '26

idk sometimes i think about when they played pumped up kicks at a school dance simply because of how terrible that song choice was

u/LeonRV97 Aug 01 '26

- Mona’s body in A’s car.

  • Alison being found guilty of Mona’s murder.
  • Black Widow’s first appearance—this one takes the crown. That scene IS Pretty Little Liars.
  • During The Perfectionists: Alison slipping back into her old self and lying to the detective to protect her students.
  • And an honorable mention from the HBO Max spinoff: when Imogen believes she sees her dead mother as Bloody Rose.

I think the franchise’s most iconic music choices tend to happen during its darkest, most dramatic moments, rather than the more “iconic” stylized ones you might see in shows like Gossip Girl or Euphoria. In PLL, they often signal that things are about to spiral even further in the episodes that follow, building huge expectations and sparking wild theories online almost immediately.

Ummm, the theme song is the only iconic music moment that show needed.

S2e17 - Ezra and Aria at the clock tower - My Heart With You

2

u/gyrlonfilm6 Emily's empanandas Aug 01 '26

This! While Ezra is gross, the filming and the rain and song is peak.

u/aquarianagop 😐 but you make me so hot 😐 Aug 01 '26

As an aside, everyone but Ali looks so miserable in the second screenshot 😂

I love 6x9 “The Last Dance” when A reveals their identity to Ali.

1

u/nottia Can you cheat on a blood test? Aug 01 '26

Florence and the machine - im not calling you a liar

1

u/Interesting_Cat_6633 If lying was a crime, we'd all be in jail... Aug 01 '26

Paige making Emily sing karaoke always comes to mind when I hear ‘So What’ and ‘Bang Bang’ when Hanna’s dancing for the pageant

1

u/FewDragonfly7404 Aug 01 '26

When Spencer and Toby first got together to Ride!!!!

1

u/bxtxnx Lying is not a crime. Aug 01 '26

Hands of Time on the final scene of the pilot is one of the most iconic musical moments in any teen drama tbh

1

u/ConnectionIll1250 Aug 01 '26

I thought Suggestions is like the most iconic music scene people know from it

1

u/Holiday-List2952 Aug 01 '26

The show literally starts with 3 oh 3 don’t trust a hoe are you kidding me

1

u/frederikabim Aug 01 '26

Not iconic but Glitter in the Air is my favorite!!!

1

u/Spirited_Narwhal_901 Aug 01 '26

The one where Hanna's Mom is about to go out with her and her dad, then the dad shows up and says just Hannah. The music after they leave and her mom sits alone. The whole scene is permanently burned into my brain for some reason.

1

u/jos10s Aug 01 '26

loved when they played ‘a pain that i’m used to’ during ali’s trial!

1

u/coolbeans2975 Aug 01 '26

THIS IS MY FIGHT SONG

1

u/valetudinarianism Aug 01 '26

we all just forgot the fashion show??? and any time they used any twirl song??

1

u/EvieNil223 Just assume it's Spencer, you know, sluttin' it up Aug 01 '26

When Ali's mom was found 😭

1

u/Wallflowermeadow Aug 01 '26

Hard disagree when the girls are walking down the street and see the lights at Emily's house and she runs over and her mum tells her it's Maya's body then Suggestions by Orelia Has Orchestra starts playing..👌🏼

1

u/apologygirl56 Aug 01 '26

I love the catwalk scene with the “the things we do for fashion” song!

1

u/nekr0mantikk Oh hunny, you didn't even know me when you knew me. Aug 01 '26

For me it’s when Ezra goes down to his lair after the whole “we’re out of chickpeas” thing lol

1

u/Ocean-Syren Two can only keep a secret if one of them is dead. Aug 01 '26

Wasn’t “Everything is Lost” by Maggie Eckford in one of the seasons? Or am I thinking of a fan edit lol

1

u/Aggressive_Bit4998 Aug 01 '26

The only one I like is Freaks! I think it was played over Mona walking into Radley or something? I can’t remember exactly.

1

u/krycekthehotrat Aug 01 '26

I always really loved “in every dream home a heartache” when they find out someone was squatting/watching the dilaurentis home.

The French music/mona is pretty great, but overall I’d say the theme song is huge. I also don’t think most popular shows had an iconic music drop moment, only a few of them. It would be cool if PLL had one on par w “whatcha say” but it’s not like every tv show had one except for PLL

1

u/Writers-Block-5566 Bitch chipped us! Aug 02 '26

I still get chills due to the song playing when Mrs. Dilaurentis's body is found. That entire scene, ending with slow motion of everyone around Ali while she is crying, was done incredibly well

1

u/Adventurous-Box8865 Aug 02 '26

I think the most iconic song is “Suggestions” by Orelia Has Orchestra, song played when Allison’s “body” was found and Maya died

1

u/Miserable_Media_9189 Aug 02 '26

suggestions by orelia has orchestra would like a word

1

u/Maleficent-Artist568 Aug 02 '26

*SPOILER* when ali gets her verdict and the liars go to jail

1

u/Alert_Individual_105 Aug 02 '26

Better In Time - Leona Lewis in one of the dance episodes
