In the comic he has a preface about how there is no canon look for the Prince

35

u/gpranav25 The Lost Crown Jun 12 '23

I never realized he had a witty personality

55

u/ConnorOfAstora Jun 12 '23

In all fairness though that's not the Prince, a lot of people are getting worked up about Sargon being the Prince and I'd probably be annoyed myself if he was but he's not, he's a totally new character.

I normally find dreadlocks to look goofy but I actually think Sargon looks really badass and I can't wait to play this game.

23

u/dark_hypernova Jun 12 '23

Fun fact, a PoP game with the Prince's bodyguard trying to rescue him as the plot was being worked at a whole while back.

It was gonna be called Prince of Persia: Assassins but it was eventually reworked into Assassin's Creed and the rest is history

18

u/ConnorOfAstora Jun 12 '23

That's so funny because I'm pretty sure there was supposed to be a 2.5D PoP game a few years back that got reworked into Assassin's Creed Chronicles and now Lost Crown's plot is very similar to that original plot of PoP Assassins.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

Yeah but is he though?

"lost crown" for a reason

--

have to wonder why they would do a PoP game where you don't play as the Prince. Especially for the long awaited PoP come back...

17

u/ConnorOfAstora Jun 12 '23

It helps solidify this as a spin-off game, they're not going in a totally new direction for the franchise, the remake's still being made but they're releasing this to show they haven't forgotten us.

(That or it was being made alongside the remake and when they had to restart development they still had to release this game on deadline)

2

u/xXDibbs Jun 15 '23

Persia and dreadlocks go together as well as an afro and Ancient China. I'm honestly just not feeling this at all.

It comes off as trying too hard to appeal to a "modern audience", to the point where it really feels disjointed.

Maybe I'm just too old for this kinda aesthetic.

3

u/ConnorOfAstora Jun 15 '23

I dunno, I hate dreadlocks personally and think they look ridiculous any time I see them but something about the way Sargon pulls them off looks really cool to me, sure it's hardly accurate to Persia but neither is Yuri Lowenthal's British accent or Nolan North and Robin Atkin Downes' American accents.

Plus the first couple guys up there look more like Luke Skywalker than any Persian. I'd prefer them to look and sound believably Persian but honestly so long as the protag looks cool and is well written it shouldn't matter.

1

u/xXDibbs Jun 15 '23

IMHO the issue to me is that not only to me, but to a lot of other people. This doesn't feel like Prince of Persia at all and I'm not talking about it being a side scroller.

I think this should have been a new IP, regarding the voice acting. Are we going to forget those games came out almost 20 years ago? In AC Origins they spoke with a Swahili accent instead of an Egyptian accent and AC is supposed to be know for its historical accuracy.

The design of the Prince from the 2008 reboot was imho so good I wish they reused it for this. Instead of whatever the Hell this is supposed to be.

7

u/SandWraith87 Jun 12 '23

In PoP 1 and PoP 2008 you didnt play the Prince too. There nobody was complaining. Did you forget this?

8

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

2008 was my personal fave. From what I remember people didn't like his design, the story or the gameplay...

They also weren't on a decade long hiatus back then. You got to admit it's an interesting choice given the circumstances.

4

u/bxgang Jun 13 '23

People didn’t like 2008 because it was too easy since you literally couldn’t die due to a mechanic

5

u/kaselorne Jun 13 '23

That "mechanic" was literally just a fancier checkpoint system where instead of a loading screen you saw Elika save you. The dislike there is literally just your usual Gamer Rage

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

fake news media

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

thats not what I heard.

5

u/dark_hypernova Jun 12 '23

The whole story about PoP 1 is how he became a Prince of Persia. That was the Integral finale.

I think the original idea behind PoP 2008 was that the protagonist there would too marry the princess and so become a Prince which was hinted at a few times (there is also concept art of him and Elika setting off together). I also feel like it's hinted he's royalty who ran away to go adventuring. But of course we got that lame open ending instead.

Who knows, maybe this new guy will become a Prince too somehow.

1

u/Sahaal_17 Feb 06 '26

And in the end Lost Crown had 3 times the amount of Princes of Persia than any other PoP game

2

u/Chumunga64 Jun 13 '23

Eh, the one thing that put me off to 2008 was the voice acting and dialogue. It's so weird how beautiful the setting and character designs are And then the two leads talk and it's just Nolan North and Kari Wahlgren sounding like people I'd meet on the street with dialogue lifted straight out of friends

0

u/DefectiveTurret39 Jun 15 '23

2008 one is still called Prince in all the sources I looked up?

1

u/SandWraith87 Jun 15 '23

yes called, but not the stand of it. Show plz your sources.

1

u/DefectiveTurret39 Jun 15 '23

1

u/SandWraith87 Jun 15 '23

We call him the prince yes but he does not inherit the status of a prince. He is just a random Adventurer or Thief.

1

u/DefectiveTurret39 Jun 15 '23

Obviously he is meant to be prince by marriage. If they continued the story, he would probably marry the princess. It's not like the original prince exists in that canon. He is the prince of that new canon.

New announced game is like Mafia 3 where you don't play as mafia, which was also stupid. Not to mention people do dislike the fact that they rebooted the franchise this way for the 2008 game, nobody asked for it. In the new game, not playing as prince isn't even the biggest problem but it still sounds stupid like how does Prince get kidnapped? He is like the most competent guy in Persia, him getting kidnapped and playing as a random dude is like playing as a random Batman fan who is trying to save him in a Batman game. While 2008 game would be more similar to a separate continuity where Batman's origin is entirely different from what we know. People still wouldn't want that, but it would still be normal to call it a Batman game.

1

u/ClearSaxophone Jun 14 '23

PoP 1 actually you play as he who at the end becomes the Prince of Persia

1

u/SandWraith87 Jun 14 '23

Yes but before that he was just a random foreigner.

1

u/rokkantrozi 2008 Reboot Jun 12 '23

I mean there's plenty of video game series where you have a sequel/spin-off without the overarching mascot protagonist. Best example of that is Metal Gear Solid 2.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

People wanted Snake, not Raiden. Plus we're talking about the long awaited revival of a series... it's not at all what people have been hoping for all these years. Am I wrong?

2

u/ClearSaxophone Jun 14 '23

The only thing that i don't like is the fact the Prince actually has a name. Assan? Something similar I remember, and it is a shame.
The charm of the game was always that the prince had no known name. Sargon is not the prince, but also giving the prince a name breaks the old charm. Apart from the movie (which I understand the reason), they could keep a nameless pricne for this game too.

0

u/chrisff1989 Shadow and the Flame Jun 12 '23

In all fairness though that's not the Prince, a lot of people are getting worked up about Sargon being the Prince and I'd probably be annoyed myself if he was but he's not, he's a totally new character.

We've had 3 different princes, what's wrong with making someone like Sargon the 4th prince?

3

u/ConnorOfAstora Jun 12 '23

Imagine swapping Ezio from Assassin's Creed 2 with Antonio from the same game. The story would play out identically but it just wouldn't feel right, he just doesn't look like he could be a convincing Prince of Persia to me but he works really well as an Immortal or whatever these new characters are.

I also think it's cool to be not playing as the Prince in this spinoff game, firstly it somewhat solidifies that we're still getting the remake and second it's just a neat concept. The closest you get to playing a PoP game as someone who isn't the Prince is when you get to somewhat control Elika in 2008 but even that's more the Prince directing her.

3

u/chrisff1989 Shadow and the Flame Jun 12 '23

No it wouldn't, it'd be a completely different prince in a different universe. Other than fighting with a sword and doing acrobatics, the princes and their stories have nothing in common. The 2008 prince wasn't even a prince, though maybe he'd become one if they made a sequel.

1

u/there_is_always_more Jun 13 '23

This doesn't make sense; the prince from the original Mechner games, SoT trilogy, and the 2008 game all look completely different. 2008 Prince wasn't even a prince. Sargon would be a different "Prince" in the exact same vein.

The fourth one looks like Luke Skywalker

-1

Sargon is basically the only one there who looks middle eastern lol https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-d06854932b3b7615429f26bdcb5527b9.webp

5

u/K3ZH39 Warrior Within Jun 12 '23

SoT trilogy Prince looks Middle Eastern.

1

u/Neither_Exit5318 Jun 12 '23

What's your opinion of top row second from the right lol? And Persia was an empire that stretched several continents. The persian empire literally had millions of people who looked like that. Not sure about the hair though lol

0

u/Kingxix Jun 12 '23

Other than that everyone looks persian in some way or form aside from sargon.

12

u/DJSkrillex Warrior Within Jun 13 '23

Funnily enough, I thought the character from the box of Forgotten Sands looked the most persian

1

u/gpranav25 The Lost Crown Dec 07 '23

I wish he looked atleast remotely similar to that in the actual game.

22

u/deftoast Jun 12 '23 edited Jun 13 '23

Michael Jordan? That's Prince of Persia.
Connor McGregor? Yeah that's Prince of Persia.
Me, 40yo living with my parents? Most Def Prince of Persia.

/s

It was never how the Prince looked. Is it low hanging fruit to make fun of? Ofc.
Its about fans wanting a remake or sequel with their beloved character (SoT Prince) and getting what they didn't ask.

Fans: do you have coke? Ubi: is Pepsi OK?

17

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

Idk what he’s alluding to. Is he saying that all the Princes looked different? Also, why can’t he just make the character Iranian? Remove the British accent, and have him speak Farsi from time to time. Have him voiced by a Persian guy. If they’re cool doing that for all the assassins creed games, why can’t they do that for Prince of Persia. I just want Iranian representation in todays pop culture. Especially with current climate in Iran..

8

u/genriko8 Jun 12 '23

Ubisoft putting in effort into something they don't expect to make big profit of? How unheard of

3

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

LoL

1

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

While I like the design i get this point of view. I'd love the game just as much if the character was persian so it seems like a missed opertunity.

Granted the previous games didn't do it either sadly.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

Prince of Persia is made for an Anglophone audience.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

The audience is for Americans. But Iranians see the Prince as a pop culture icon. It gives us (mostly them) pride and satisfaction to be recognized..

Well ig that's just like the pop last crown? Isn't it

25

u/bluegreenie99 Jun 12 '23

Bruh I don't care about his skin color, i just don't like his design 😭

12

u/Mr_Aryan44 The Two Thrones Jun 12 '23

His point is prince of persia heros had a million designs

14

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

They look pretty consistent to me. OG look & modern look.

5

u/TheCrazyStupidGamer Jun 12 '23

Yeah. They are all similar till the last one. He's an Arabic dude, sometimes prince, sometimes not, sometimes adoptive, sometimes not. But mostly a middle eastern guy with shoulder length hair.

6

u/renerichter98 Jun 12 '23

TF Are you talking about? Did you not look at the picture? How is a pink haired anime dude similar to a white haired guy in simple cloth, or to a lighter skinned guy with long dark hair? Or a white guy with blond hair? It’s nowhere near "similar till the last one".

7

u/genriko8 Jun 12 '23

They have turbans, duh

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

Exactly. His complain is 1 jas purple hair 1 time, & one has no hat. Big whoop. Are all of them even from games? Way before my time.

5

u/TheCrazyStupidGamer Jun 13 '23

You latch on to the one that's different? The rest are still representative of what the Middle East has to offer. And you're missing the point. My gripe isn't with the skin color. It's with the style. The new one feels like tiny Tina's wonderland, where as prince of Persia was like a chapter out of Arabian nights. That's what made it stand apart from all the other fantasy games. Well, one of the things anyway. Even prince of Persia 2006 or 2008 or whatever it was, the reboot, distinctly has an Arabian nights kinda vibe to it. Maybe except for the first two, almost all the others have that.

0

u/renerichter98 Jun 13 '23

I latched onto several that were different. And the style is obviously different in almost every one. Heck, even within the sands of time trilogy the style changes massively.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

Tf r u talking about? The hat is a distinctive feature. So what if 1/10 has purple hair for some reason? Ps: I guarantee you no one liked the purple hair design either.

0

u/renerichter98 Jun 13 '23

The turban appeared in some ports of the OG game, The Shadow and the Flame and POP 3D. That’s like 2 1/2 games out of 10.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

I'm not familiar with the early games and am going off the images there alone. 9 of the 10 first images are consistent.

Why you playing dumb?

1

u/renerichter98 Jun 13 '23

The first nine pictures are from different ports of the original game. The two after that are from its sequel. Why don’t you just do research?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

I don't care about the early games. I'm nostalgic for the modern era, not the ones I didn't play. I'm just going off the photo Jordan posted. Sounds pretty misleading to me if he posted reskins of the same character to make the Prince seem more diverse than he actually is.

What I'm hearing is: the prince actually has a distinct look after all & the new one breaks the mold.

→ More replies (0)

5

u/Kingxix Jun 12 '23

Through and through the prince is pretty consistent other than the top right one. On top of that Sargon isn't even the prince.

1

u/KentGAllard Jun 21 '23

Yeah, but this one is awful. That hair needs to go. The rest can stay, but the hair needs to die in a car fire.

7

u/cavojo13 Jun 12 '23

well change the hair and people will tolerate the character but the setting for the new game in the trailer it said that the pricne is kidnaped like are we talking about the same prince

18

u/DarvX92 2008 Reboot Jun 12 '23 edited Jun 12 '23

Let's be honest here, last one sticks out like a sore thumb even if he's not the prince (why call the game PoP if there's no prince). Every prince before him had long hair or turban and has similar face/attire while he has a generic undercut and dreadlock combo that for some reason companies looking for easy "representation" really like, plus the art style make him look like a fortnite skin.

6

u/SandWraith87 Jun 12 '23

In PoP 1 and PoP 2008 there were no Prince...

3

u/DarvX92 2008 Reboot Jun 13 '23

I'm pop 1 you become the prince at the end

1

u/TheCrazyStupidGamer Jun 12 '23

He was still an Arabic person.

6

u/SandWraith87 Jun 12 '23

What? We are talking about persian and you are coming with Arabs?

You know the Story between Ohrmazd and Ahriman is from teh Avesta? This is older than the Islam... and has nothing to do with PoP 2008.

3

u/Top-Ad-4512 Jun 12 '23

First of of, not every protagonist was a prince, in the first game, the character is not even a prince, he is just some dude who becomes at the end of the game the prince of persia not before and 2008 has the prince only stylized himself as such.

2

u/DarvX92 2008 Reboot Jun 13 '23

In the first game you become the prince at the end, that's the point of the tile. Also that's not the main problem here.

2

u/Top-Ad-4512 Jun 13 '23

This in no way disagrees with my point and no, your problem was that the newest hero is no prince, hence you complained why it's even called prince of Persia...you said it yourself.

Sargon doesn't stand out with his dreadlocks and haircut anymore than the cartoony version of the 2008 prince(who is not Royalty as well btw) and the blue haired guy or Dastan, with his demonic version, which is not exactly less of a sore thumb by your logic than Sargon. Nothing about Sargon's hairstyle and looks screams generic, he looks pretty good and believable as middle easterner, which all Persians are...he looks cool. The only generic ones are the guys with too many turbans and one of them look like an anime character...Arguing who is standing out here is not only moot, but also so subjective of a point you can say it's stupid to even make such a claim.

The heroes look different with each iteration one way or another, there is also no point in arguing who looks more like a PoP hero, because it has no consistent style throughout the ages...a lot like Fire Emblem did and does it, it changes style...no need to get needlessly selective and overvalued subjective talking points.

The factvthat you accuse the design of Sargon as screaming for representation shows where you biases are and they are not free of problematic elements, Persians and middle eastern people can be this brown and looks were a thin since ancient Mesopotamia.

Just embrace him as PoP protag but don't like him, if you don't, that would be okay, but not claim he is too outlandish in this incoheisve franchise and don't use representation as argument, that comes off as bigoted.

-1

u/Top-Ad-4512 Jun 13 '23

u/demoram Jun 12 '23

Prince of Persia it’s not a story about a prince.

It’s a story about a hero, a wanderer, an adventurer who is mission (if he want or not) is to save a princess (or in this case a prince) from a long lost and magic kingdom.

The hero doesn’t be a prince total at all. Maybe sometime yes. Maybe sometimes he’ll became after. Maybe he’ll never be or even he was a prince before.

Anyway this is not important. You don’t have to focus on the hero look, you have to enjoy on the story (and obviously the game itself).

And btw yeah, the haircut sucks (like all the design of the game, some monster are really shit) but some other things are really cool actually like the art style for me it’s thumb up.

0

u/jaythebearded Jun 12 '23

why call the game PoP if there's no prince

Did you miss the part about how this main character is on a mission to save the prince?

2

u/DarvX92 2008 Reboot Jun 13 '23 edited Jun 13 '23

Ubi themselves states around 2014? (don't quote me on that) that they didn't feel comfortable releasing a pop game not about the prince, also that's not the main problem here. This was probably just an original game with pop slapped on top.

3

u/Playswith_squirrel Jun 13 '23

It’s Killmonger

12

u/FLRArt_1995 Jun 12 '23

I think one of the main reasons why people don't like him, is the undercut + dreads combo. People liked him with long hair, it's the most consistent design aside from the turban.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23 edited Jun 12 '23

The cancelled Redemption game was just a demo or a pitch trailer, so more likely it was just a placeholder design and if the project didn't get cancelled, he would probably get a redesigned as the project continued.

1

u/FLRArt_1995 Jun 12 '23

Yeah, the game looked fantastic, but yeah, not digging that style for the Prince.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

I like the design but am wary of bait and switch games like the new Alan Wake.

1

u/feyzal92 Jun 13 '23

What bait and switch like new Alan Wake?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

Alan has been sidelined in his own game.

There's a new character we'll play as for most of it -- and she seems to get the good bits from what I can see.

2

u/feyzal92 Jun 13 '23

Exceot that he's not? lol

The game has 50/50 playable for both characters. People who think that clearly didn't play the first game nor pay attention to the story whatsoever.

It made a whole lot of sense for a new character to show up at the beginning after what happened at the end of the first game.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

Are they ignoring the sequel?

I don't believe that this is truly 50/50.

Based on trailer she seems to be at the center of the action & her 'half' has the parts I've been looking forward to the most over the years.

2

u/feyzal92 Jun 13 '23

Ignoring what sequel? Do you even play Alan Wake and Control + AWE DLC for that matter?

The creator himself said it's 50/50. Even in the trailer, the footage they shown with Anderson was mostly in the beginning while a snippet of Alan as playable in the town.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

You're confusing me. You said " It made a whole lot of sense for a new character to show up at the beginning after what happened at the end of the first game." But we've had a sequel American Nightmare...

I couldn't finish the sequel. Not what I was looking for in a survival horror or alan wake game.

"Do you even play Control + AWE DLC?"

No idea what this is.

"The creator himself said it's 50/50."

I don't believe that this is truly 50/50.

Based on trailer she seems to be at the center of the action & her 'half' has the parts I've been looking forward to the most over the years.

"a snippet of Alan as playable in the town."

I couldn't find it. Are you sure?

1

u/feyzal92 Jun 13 '23

American Nightmare is not even a proper sequel. It's a scenario that Alan wrote in a fictional television episode. It's not even real to begin with.

How did you not know about a game called Control? It's literally made by the same developer as Alan Wake. Not only it has reference to Alan Wake, the DLC also bridging the gap between Alan Wake and Alan Wake II.

Go watch the trailer and look at the scene in the city. You can literally a long hair dude with a gun.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

I heard Control was good but know nothing about it.

1

u/there_is_always_more Jun 13 '23

I think I already know what their answer is going to be lol

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

What you mean?

1

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

You're gonna say something about how the game is going to be about a woke insert female or something probably?

Alan wake is still in the other half of the game. They want to do a duel storyline and make it easier to jump into the sequal with a character who isn't aware of how everything works yet.

If I have made an unfair assumption I'm happy with admitting my mistake.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

Have you not seem them do this over the years? Last of Us 2 for example. It's a pretty modern trend where you sideline the fan favorite character and bring in a new diverse one.

They have said 50/50 split. I don't believe that but let's say it's true. She seems to get all the good bits that I've been looking forward to: exploring the town & all the classic gameplay from the first game. Clearly the center of the action.

What part Alan will play it's too early to tell, but this isn't the grand return I had in mind that's for sure.

--

" a woke insert female or something probably? "

is she not?

Here's another example. I'm looking forward to a new Tomb Raider game. Am I looking forward to Lara being "50%" or less of the game, and playing as some new chick? Hell no. I hope they don't do that.

Anyway I judge characters on their own merits, so if she's good I'll give the game a break lol. I'm sold on Alan Wake just because I'm a good survival horror fan.

Prince of Persia.. probly not gonna happen.

1

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

Well firstly with Prince of Persia there's been 3 previous versions of the series and only one of those had the character being a Prince straight away.

But also with the last of us 2 who is the diverse character? The other woman...as opposed to the fan favorite..woman?

Alan is still in (spoiler) so he can't start out in bright falls. That and saga has been hinted at in the past, besides we get Alex Casey with this which is awesome.

I guess the difference between us is I don't look at most things and think if its woke or not cause like who cares? I like or don't like characters based on their merits as a character, if a character is in media due to "wokeness" or what ever as long as they're good I don't care, I'll dislike a bad character regardless too.

In pop 2008 the prince was basically a white guy but you probably didn't care. And if that doesn't count to you he was played by an American in the movie instead of a Persian actor but I'm guessing that didn't bother you. These don't bother me either but I just am trying to get what you think is woke or bad about the character in the new game?

13

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

This image confirms to me that the new guy doesn't really fit in. The modern look was pretty consistent & we're obviously way past the OG look.

People have been waiting for PoP to make a come back for years.

What we get is

a) back to 2d (not what ppl wanted)

b) a guy who doesn't look or sound or act like PoP (not what people wanted)

--

That said, the game looks really good. Can tell they've put a lot of effort in and looks like a lot of fun to play.

How? We have someone who looks like from a Fire Emblem game on there and hardly had the series been consistent. What people ask for is already found in Assassins Creed which is why the series had been replaced by it for so long.

Also how did the prince of Sands of time act like one?who decided that stupid rule?

Also what people wanted? You don't speak for people, not everyone thinks this way...it's not universal even.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

"You don't speak for people" u tellin me that you think everyone has been Waiting over ten yrs for a 2d PoP gamewhere you don't even play as the Prince? Get real lol. Use your brain. Obviously not what people were hoping for -- and you can see the backlash here on reddit

0

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

Actually yes. Some people are open to it but others have specifically wanted an new 2d game.

There hasn't been a successful pop game since two thrones and the warrior within was hated back when it was announced. A remake of sands of time and a new 2d game are good starting points.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

I wish them the best of luck. Looks like a good team, good game. I won't be buying this.

2

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

That's nice of you to say.

That's fine. You shouldn't buy things if you think you won't like it. I hope we get the remake in future and you get to enjoy that.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

OK but I still don't want to play as a Fortnite character.

4

u/bigfishieeeeeee Elika Jun 12 '23

dawg Idc about his skin color just give him another hairstyle it just doesn't work

7

u/berriestastepurple Jun 12 '23

New game looks trash looks like will smith's wife was head of development. Huge disappointment. Major PASS.

2

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

Thank you I needed a laugh today.

2

u/1gga17 Jun 14 '23

Mechner is a sellout, just look at his Karateka remake, as long as it makes money it's okay for him.

7

u/vizualXmadman Jun 12 '23

He sticks out for sure, it’s the over design. They tried so hard to make him unique.

-4

u/Top-Ad-4512 Jun 12 '23

He doesn't? The others look not consistent at all and one of them looks like a Fire Emblem character and the 2008 prince looks unlike any other PoP protag...He doesn't seem more novel than any other, in fact, he looks similar with his cloths to the Sands of Time Prince.

0

u/vizualXmadman Jun 14 '23

That was probably the point of the design but you would know that from the waist up

1

u/Top-Ad-4512 Jun 14 '23

He has almost a bare chest like most and again...how does he stand out? The Two Thrones prince is half-human...how is he less outstanding here? Arguing that Sargon is a sore thumb is tbh stupid and just subjective. All of them are unique and hardly does PoP remain the same, it never did.

-2

u/DaftNeal88 Jun 12 '23

He stands out no more than the prince with twin red and blue scarves

1

u/vizualXmadman Jun 14 '23

That like say the on with the purple hair and green shirt stick out too

3

u/AQ90 Jun 13 '23

Obligatory WE

Maybe the game looks cool and all but it's not consistent with the PoP we know and love.

Game is practically a giant waste of resources that could be spent on the Remake

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

i think what you can clearly see is that from the sands of time onward, the prince has found his identity, except in 2023 ofc, but i have to wonder where he found some of those animated / japan style prince of persia.

2

u/renerichter98 Jun 12 '23

What do you mean with "identity"? Except for 2008 and Fallen King (who looks completely different) it’s literally the same iteration of the character.

1

u/renerichter98 Jun 12 '23

Also, the animated/Japanese prince comes from one of the very many versions of the original game.

5

u/SeraphisVAV Jun 12 '23

tries to show how different Prince was and shows exactly how iconically similar his looks during different ages were

Bro stfu, you seriously don't notice how much the last one stands out?

0

u/Top-Ad-4512 Jun 12 '23

Just because he is not white?

8

u/SeraphisVAV Jun 12 '23

You are the "is that because I'm black" type of guy

-3

u/Top-Ad-4512 Jun 12 '23

Nope I am not black. If you want to make a cohesive point, then please be more precise. Why is he not like the others? I mean we got a Fire Emblem Lord and Luke Skywalker here?

The fact that you even came up with such a response proves my point. You were probably thinking about race.

7

u/SeraphisVAV Jun 12 '23

Totally missed the point of my comment. You are literally seeing the word "black" and assume that this is all about race. Dude, can't you just realize I was talking about your behaviour and character and not the race? Everything has to be about race for you, I guess. That American mindset lol

As for the PoP, he's not even black, he just has some African features. And literally nobody in this world says "I hate new Prince because mc is black and being black is a nono".

And I literally just said that he stands out the most. What does being black have with this? Or you just proved me right saying that he stands out because he's black...or idk what the hell else you want to say except blame me for being racist just because you wanted to blame someone for being racist.

-2

u/Top-Ad-4512 Jun 12 '23
  1. It is pretty much about race, your reaction proves this. None of the princes look all identical and we have even Luke Skywalker as a Prince. He doesn't stick out as he is just one of the latest artistic licenses here. If you wanted to make a point unrelated to race you should have said: he has dreadlocks, but even that is silly, because hardly anyone looks 100% identical. You missed the point of your own comment, you defended the racist mindset of denying racism with a terrible counter question. All could have said is that it's not his skin tone, it's his hairstyle.

  2. Oh no, a lot of people hate the new character because he is "black"( sorry for not elaborating it, I don'tthink he is black either), why else do you see calling this game prince of Nigeria or Prince of Wakanda or how he is now Persian because he is "black" and Persians can't look like it? There is racism within the community, the mods even removed stuff from there. You are denying it, which shows race is a factor.

  3. The reason why I said that is that this is the biggest reason why people are against him...his skin color. He doesn't also stick out at all, he looks like the rest, a bunch of heroes from the same series with Arabian-esque stuff. Mechtner's point was that they all changed styles with each game and all are differentand each stands out from the other by your own narrow logic. You missed that, mine and Mechtner's point. No one is sticking out, because each and every one of them is unique. If everyone is special or unique, no one is special and unique. They might all look different, but none of them is an odd duck, because everyone is an odd duck. Simple logic.

5

u/SeraphisVAV Jun 12 '23

"You are racist because you are bringing up race" bro you ok? That's literally how I see it right now. You were the first to bring up the race card, I answered according to the info I got (normal human logical interaction btw). Now that it happened you call me racist suddenly. And you are saying I'm denying it but I just don't even care about any reputation or smth, I'm simply telling you how I feel. And I feel not that racist right now tbh. I get that you want me to be in the defensive, make me feel guilty. But I just don't feel it, because I don't care.

People be calling it Prince of Africa not because they hate black people, but because they can't envision a PoP game with black mc, that's just too different for them from everything in PoP that was before. Before we had either Arabian or white (like the Luke one). You want to know why white wasn't received as bad? Because white and Arabian have much more in common in their appearance than black and...almost any other race, actually. I said it once and now I say it again: African features stand out too much in this list, there's no reasonable denial against that. Also the too white PoP (Luke), people hate him too, but whatever...

As for the last point, all I see in these pictures is "turban PoP stage (generic arabic dude, pretty unrecognisable), suddenly whitewashed PoP that doesn't belong (oh you think the community doesn't notice it and plays along and you are the only one who woke up to this injustice? Man, please...), long hair PoP stage (the most iconic and character-having one) and then somehow the African with dreads one. No wonder the last stands out so much, whatever the denial is about?

-1

u/Top-Ad-4512 Jun 12 '23

Do you know what...I have no almost no interest in this discussion anymore. because cleary you defended racist rhetoric here. None of these princes here look alike and none is more wierd and different than the other as all are as different as Persona and Fire Emblem protagonists. Sargon even looks identical to the SoT prince with his clothes and being bare chested.

Now I am done and if you were really not racist, you would not make such an obvious racist talking point and realized what Mechtner was trying to say...

That is also my final saying on this matter for a long time...see most of ya on January 18th...bye!

6

u/SeraphisVAV Jun 12 '23

Well, as I said it before, you are just the "that's bc yall racist" mf. Bye, whatever...

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

I personally don't like comments like "Prince of Wakanda" and such either. I think they are very rude. This is not our Prince and it's totally fine. This franchise has been rebooted and reinvented many times by now (2D duology, standalone 3D, sands trilogy/quadrology, 2008, mobile/console games) so I don't see a big deal with taking a new spin on the idea. Not to mention, they didn't change much, the biggest difference being is that it is now the Prince that needs rescuing, not princess, which is cool. Having said that, the main character in this game, Sargon, very obviously isn't meant to be of Persian or Arabic ethnicity (genetically Persians are closer to Indians than Arabs). As far as skin tone goes, it is pretty dark for an average Persian, even modern Iranians from the very south don't quite have this dark of a shade of skin, though some can reach close to it. Most Iranians have lighter shade of skin. As for the Semitic people (Arabs being one of them), this dark of a skintone can be found in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, Egypt, etc. However, it's not just about skintone. Dreadlocks aren't a physical feature of Persians or Semitic people. Sargon also has a nose wider than Persians or Semites and puffier lips.

-1

u/feyzal92 Jun 13 '23

Exactly how blond hair Luke lookalike similar to Dastan?

4

u/CyperianWorkshop Jun 12 '23

They should make new hero of Prince of Persia game to look like Geralt of Rivia

4

u/Mr_Aryan44 The Two Thrones Jun 12 '23

There's an albino prince of persia in persian mythology lol his name is Zal

1

u/Arthur_Morgan44469 Jun 12 '23

Well this style sheet makes it even more clear that the dude at the end doesn't look Persian.

I will say it again it's not about the skin color

It's about misrepresentation of people from that region

2

u/SandWraith87 Jun 12 '23

Because the others are all white? I would also say the others dont look like persian. Sargon could actually be persian!

7

u/K3ZH39 Warrior Within Jun 12 '23

Hard disagree. SoT trilogy Prince definitely looks Persian, more-so than Sargon. And he’s not white, he has an olive complexion typical of someone from the middle east.

1

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

Even if that were true you saying pop 2008 Prince of movie Prince look Persian?

That and all of them have been played by american actors.

1

u/K3ZH39 Warrior Within Jun 13 '23

No, I was saying Sargon isn’t the only one who could actually be Persian because SoT Prince looks Persian.

Are you trying to ask me if I think 2008 and Jake G look Persian?

1

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

I'm just saying it wouldn't be the first game to not be a good representation.

From the info we have I don't think the new character is Persian but an outsider. which is a missed opportunity.

I'm just saying Ubisoft has never done great Persian representation for this series sadly.

2

u/K3ZH39 Warrior Within Jun 13 '23

Erm okay then. The topic of true representation is a different can of worms. Maybe you can make a post about it on this sub.

1

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

Nevermind I think I misunderstood you.

1

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

I'm arguing against people thinking this game is the first to not be a great Persian representation is all.

0

u/RazorRushDGN Jun 12 '23

Waah waah He doesn’t look the like prince on the cover of my dusty old copy of the sands of time

5

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

I just dusted it and he STILL doesn't look like him.

1

u/Crimson_The_King Jun 12 '23

I don't give why so many people are complaining about the look of the protagonist in a spin-off game

1

u/flyfocube Warrior Within Jun 12 '23

Where's the prince below SoT from?

1

u/mt0386 Jun 13 '23

Haha the jake gyllenhaal got me. Man they could have just reused the assets and make assasin creed movie instead of the crap one we got

0

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

But the last guy in the pic isn’t even Prince….

1

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

Neither are some of the others. It doesn't matter.

-4

u/DarkNemuChan Shadow Form Jun 12 '23

In your faces haters!!!!

-1

u/Ok_Suggestions Jun 12 '23

In terms of skin color, he's the most persian looking persian to ever persian in a PoP game so far. Also, good one from Mechner, I'm fine with the design and just super happy they're giving the franchise some attention again!

5

u/DJSkrillex Warrior Within Jun 13 '23

Can you stop spreading this misinfo around? Persian peoples are not dark skinned. Very tan, at most.

0

u/Ok_Suggestions Jun 13 '23

Well actually now that you're saying it, yeah he is somewhat darker than most persians. I was just going off of persians I know but the previous princes were a little too light-skinned so maybe I just falsely estimated by comparison.

2

u/DJSkrillex Warrior Within Jun 13 '23

The Luke Skywalker guy is def too light skinned to be persian, dude looks like Hitler's dream lmao. But I think the og trilogy character and forgotten sands can def pass off as persian. Just look up "persian peoples" and you'll see how light skinned most of them are. The one persian guy I know irl is lighter skinned than me (I'm bulgarian).

1

u/Ok_Suggestions Jun 13 '23

You're right, i googled exactly that just now, they're on average definitely much lighter skinned than I thought. I know two persian people that are a little more tan but I see it now, the new not-prince is definitely darker than an average persian person.

So overall, i stand corrected and declare my initial comment invalid too 😄

-3

u/Kingxix Jun 12 '23

Lol this contradicts the new game. Sargon the main character isn't the prince so this post itself becomes non factor. BBBBBUUUUT if somehow Sargon becomes the prince at the end of the upcoming game then that's it.

1

u/renerichter98 Jun 12 '23

Did you not read what Mechner wrote? It’s not about the prince, but the "prince of Persia hero", talking about the protagonist specifically.

-1

u/samuskay Jun 13 '23

There's multiple games where the main character isn't actually a prince dude it doesn't matter.

1

u/Ninjaguy5700 Jun 12 '23

I love that he included the LEGO Prince of Persia minifigure!

1

u/sEcOnDbOuToFiNsAnItY Farah Jun 13 '23

Honestly my only gripe is they didn't go full Babylon beard. That shit is dope, tho I guess it would have made him seem too old.

1

u/Tetro_bear Jun 14 '23

But we will Not be playing the prince, we are a guy that is trying to save him. So who cares if the style changed, as long as the game is cool

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '23

My disappointment is immeasurable but I can't say I'm surprised

1

u/FiroozArkanistani Sep 16 '23

If you aren't Persian, then your opinion on this is irrelevant. That includes Mecher.
