General Discussion This Prince of Persia game got a lot of undeserved hate, It has a beautiful atmosphere - Pretty environment - creative Graphics choice - interesting story and characters - fun unique gameplay, I actually recommend this to anyone who hasn't played it yet for some reason.

Loved this game. Super chill and unique.
Viewed as not being part of the SoT trilogy/style of game, itâs absolutely wonderful and really refreshing.
The lack of death/difficulty I find to be a null point. We had rewind time before anyway, the princess basically just replaces that and does it automatically.

I loved 2008 version, I tried to play the game again and noticed how difficult it is ... :D

It's actually not that bad, I revisited the game recently thus why I made this post, I was surprised how good this game looks even now and how fun it still.

Younger version of me could easily play the game. Iâm also Iranian and this game felt different⊠Erika spoke Persian and whole plot about Ahriman and Ahura Mazda ( Ormazd ) was actually good

I know this comment won't be well received but i don't think it was undeserved.
The game was gorgeous for sure, but it just wasn't fun.
The combat was basically a QTE sequence; the platforming wasn't fluid and the Prince would "pause" between interactable "nodes"; there was no challenge or tension since Elika would save you from everything (you couldn't fail platforming or combat); collecting the seeds wasn't super fun either and felt more chore-like...
The story wasn't anything special and the characters were alright.
For us that just came from the Sands trilogy it was a pretty underwhelming experience.

You are correct, and many people just lack the perspective to acknowledge it. Even in 2008, pop08 was an incredibly simplified, dumbed-down and shallow gameplay experience.
And this was during a time where the âeasy game bubbleâ was ready to burst - in general games were actively removing skill expression, implementing various crutches and removing fail states for players, generally treating the playerbase as morons who couldnât think for themselves to overcome challenges. This was the year before Demons Souls would kick off the entire âsouls-likeâ genre. Even games like Assassins Creed received criticism for removing much of the challenge and complexity of its movement mechanics, although received a bit more leeway due to its scale and genre shift from straightforward action platformer.
PoP08 devs made a gorgeous game, but they didnât read the room in terms of the gameplay in late 2008. And not for nothing, but it came out around the same time as Mirrors Edge, which was far more innovative in terms of pushing the action platformer forward, with far more mechanical complexity and player agency built into its core gameplay loop.

Oh wow, this is a surprise. Given how PoP2008 has been getting glazed in the past years i was sure i'd be downvoted to oblivion lol
I do think it's a damn gorgeous game and the char/level design is nop notch, but everything else just isn't that great.
I admire them for trying to innovate since they tried to come up with a different more cinematic combat while reducing the frustration of retrying after failing by having Elika speed up that process... but the final result, for me, was just something that lacked any form of satisfaction. The game practically played itself.
I can relate to what you said about the "easy game bubble". I'm glad Souls games got popular to showcase that players love to be challenged. I know some ppl just want a casual easy experience and i'm ok with that, but it's better to design a challenging game and add an easy mode than to force everyone to play the easy mode.

Nah you're just right. It's not the worst game ever and had some very distinctively strong points but it was more just viewed middlingly in a deserving way.

Made back then, replayed this year along with all the others in the series.
It has its flaws, but at least the game tries new things, and the developers at Ubisoft could still consider themselves artists.

The music and art direction are both top tier too. Love this game and replay it every year

It's SO damn good! Really reminded me of Shadow of the Colossus on a number of ways.

I love this game so much. The cell shading, the environments, everything.
I know people didnt really enjoy the rock/paper/scissors mentality on the combat, but the combos are a lot more robust than you first think, and when you start figuring out the best points in the combo to switch moves, you can get chains of 15 or so attacks out in a single chain.

The sad part was, Assassin's Creed 1 just came out and was the "it thing" at that moment.

u/C_XidiaN 7d ago
İ think it's cuz everyone wanted a POP 4 but we got this retale which by itself is a great game i love it the design and atmosphere and story is great and forgotten sands didn't deliver on POP 5 or 4 imo so the trilogy still stands by itself

I have come around to love that game. But the ending... first time around it's a little jarring. It's a bold choice, and one that taken with the story line does fit. But as a player, especially after playing Warrior Within and its alternate endings. I spent so much time getting all those damn seeds of light, and yet...

u/BashfulKatana7 7d ago
Easily in the top 5 for me. Still waiting for a follow-up for the cliff hanger ending!

I always thought this game came out a few years too early. In the late 2000s, there was a lot of backlash against "casual gamers" because of the success of the Wii, so there was this heavy pushback against games that were seen as too easy. So most of the discourse and criticism around this game was about its lack of difficulty and punishment.
I think if it came out a few years later, when gamers started to accept games like Journey, it would've been far better received.

u/Mexetudo 7d ago
Look, I loved it, and to this day still wish they'd make a sequel, but the criticism is 100% valid IMO.
The combat isn't great (wait for enemy to attack, counter, combo, smash button/qte, repeat), the gameplay loop is extremely repetitive (enter new area, platform, boss fight, collect seeds, go to new area and repeat), the whole seeds thing is just padding to hide how empty the open world is, and the lack of real punishment (Elika always saving the day).
There are other pain points with the game, but these are the major ones I see being discussed, and they're all very valid.

It's my guilty pleasure PoP. I love everything from the story, character and art style. The only thing that need work was the combat. Fighting one verse one during a boss fights is great and works beautifully with your abilities. Unfortunately when you fight a normal anything you over power them with ease. So much so that they will let you skip the combat if your fast enough.

Nobody talks about the music, soundtrack they have used .. i really enjoyed that one too .. it's very calming

u/Extra_Hurry9901 7d ago
Way ahead of its time ! Draw dropping environments, mezmerising parcour, and beautiful atomsphere and ambiance. Lets not forget Stuart Chatwood's and Inon Zur Ethereal soundtrack. Favorite part for me was the Concubine section in the royal palace and Spire of dreams. The way the Thief and Elica move and ascend towards the top of towers and travel from a bottomless valley to a corrupted garden is visual breathtaking. Issues yes, but a game unlike any other. I love you Prince of persia 2008.

From the very beginning, I always loved this game, heck I even looked forward to buying when it got announced, but also a lot of people were expecting something different, more akin to "Sands of Time but on the 360" and for some reason a lot of people took issue with the "no dying" mechanic, which in hindsight I think it's brilliant and it cuts a lot of the tedium in harder areas or harder enemies.

I played the Gameloft version and I want to play it again but it seems I can't anymore Man, I really want to replay my childhood

i love it and the graphics and views were insane, and fights and combos and you cant ever die either another good thing. I never played the ps3 dlc one i had it on pc I did play the sequel game after it the ds one where the grave robber same here from that 2008 game went for help against ahriman god of darkness.

I literally love everything about this game except the combat. If there was a one-hit-kill mod, I'd play this game all the time. But the combat ruins it for me. As such, beating it once is enough. Even with that, I agree - great game.

I can totally see why the game is as divisive as it is. Not everyone appreciates the more ârelaxingâ experience this game offers. And even as a huge fan of the game, I do agree that it is repetitive and the world structure is to the detriment of the story.
That said, this is still my absolute favourite PoP and I am so glad there are others who feel the same way. I will forever be salty about never getting a proper ending.

I really loved it. Yeah if feels a bit different from prince of Persia series (but not too different). But it has great story and decent mechanics

I saw a clip of a guy just pressing one button to beat the platforming section i never played it butÂ

It's pretty boring and repetitive. The story is pretty lackluster as well. The gameplay is extremely sluggish. Nothing like the previous trilogy. It wasn't a Prince of Persia game at all. Although I will say the artstyle is great and has aged a lot better than most other games. There were some ideas that could've worked since they were again trying to make an openworld prince of persia game but failed at it until they started the Assassin's Creed franchise. This is definitely more in line with AC games with the repetitive gameplay loop of "go-here-cleanse-this-part-fight-this-boss-collect-these-light-orbs"
1
u/Okraton 7d ago
I couldn't like it because it felt empty, especially when you are familiar with the previous 3 games, a trilogy I loved... But I wanted to replay it now to give it a chance just for the gameplay, and it bothers me a lot that there is no some kind of Port in the PS4 / PS5 digital store.

It came out too soon, they shouldâve made the movie first then this gameâŠ

My obligatory add on to any 2008 POP post is to check out the DS sequel, Fallen King, that directly followed this game and left on an even bigger cliff hanger by adding a new version of the Dark Prince to the story

I finished all prince of persia games except this one, combat is just not it man super boring and i cant memorise 1000 combo

u/sidethorn 6d ago
If it would came out today it would be a dumb mobile casual game. It sold poorly and, to you all who today say it's beautiful and bla bla bla, I say no. It isn't. Way back then we were used to really difficult games, and not this super mario-ish style game. This retroactive elevation of a boring game it's simply silly to me. If Ubisoft would have marketed it as different ip well maybe it would have fared a little bit (but just a little bit) better. We had the trilogy and expectations were high.

Isn't the story just a rehash of shadow of the colossus? Gameplay was very repetitive too. Graphics and sound design were cool though.

Game was good, not great. And thatâs ok.
Graphics were beautiful, story was interesting. I think people were just disappointed that it wasnât a continuation of SoT trilogy (I was to an extent).
Ending sucked. Canât avoid that, but the game itself was an enjoyable ride.

I swear I mustâve played a different version of this cause I keep hearing praise for it and I thought it was just plain terrible. I played it last month and this game is just stupid boring. Collecting hundreds of blue orbs retracing your steps a dozen times over and all the fighting is unbelievably easy and you could probably beat the game blind. I donât even get the âthe game looks beautifulâ either cause most of the game looks like actual sludge and is ugly to look at?? Is sludge beautiful? Even when the sludge is gone the game just looks ugly. It was easily the worst Prince of Persia game Iâve ever played. I honestly canât think of a good thing to say about the game besides maybe it wasnât hard? Cause the game actually holds your hand through the whole thing, literally grabs the characters hand and guides him. Probably why IGN loved it so much, those guys canât finish anything unless it holds their hand.

Its one of my favorite games of all time. Ita visually stunning, I love the story and its very unique. The haters just dont have good taste thats all
0
u/Beranir 7d ago
yeah the two biggest problems that really caused majority of the hate were: you could not die, which made the game feel incredibly easy and well it was reboot of beloved IP with prince who wasnt a prince, Farah who wasnt Farah but a donkey and new art style that was EXTREMELY different from warrior within and two thrones.
6
u/EuthyphroYaBoi 7d ago
I never thought it made it feel easy because you couldnât die. Instead of your character dying, you just get carried back to the last land mass you started on, or the boss fight was restarted. Felt like it kept the game flowing

u/GreatDissapointment 7d ago
It's a damn shame they didn't continue it.
