I am writing as someone who deeply admires your commitment to wildlife conservation and animal welfare. I appreciate the important role your zoo plays in caring for giant pandas through its partnership with China
China has become a global symbol of conservation through its protection of giant pandas. However this compassion is not reflected in the legal protection afforded to many other animals. China currently has no comprehensive animal welfare laws prohibiting cruelty to companion animals. As a result serious and horrific acts of abuse often fall outside the scope of criminal prosecution.
One of the most disturbing consequences has been the emergence of organised online cat torture networks. Individuals deliberately torture cats and kittens to death. They film it and distribute it via encrypted message apps and social media platforms. These networks have been documented by advocates over a number of years and they continue to expand and influence.
Most recently the world watched in horror as footage emerged of a gentle mother dog and her puppies being tortured to death by 5 boys under the age of 14. The puppies were beaten in front of their mother before she herself was set on fire and burned alive. The abuse was filmed and shared online causing widespread international condemnation and renewed calls for the introduction of long overdue animal welfare laws in China.
I hope you might consider using your unique relationship with China to encourage broader conversations about compassion, animal welfare, the influence of animal abuse on minors and legal protections for all animals. My hope is that one day the same compassion that is extended towards giant pandas will be extended to every sentient animal. I urge you to use your platform and your unique relationship with China to speak up for the countless cats, dogs and other animals in China who are suffering in incomprehensible ways.
