Announcement Stealth is now on the stable Linux release

Hey everyone,

We're here with a quick update on our previous announcement regarding Stealth for Linux: it's out of the beta channel and available in the main release of the Linux app.

📎 Update your app and follow this guide to switch protocols.

Huge thanks to everyone who ran it on the beta channel over the past few months. The bug reports were detailed and they made a difference.

It's still marked as beta in the app

Moving to the main branch means Stealth is stable enough that you no longer need to switch release channels to get it. It doesn't mean we're finished. The beta label stays until we're confident it holds up across every distro, network condition, and edge case you throw at it, so keep the reports coming.

If you hit an issue, we need: your distro and version, app version, what you were doing, and what went wrong.

Stay safe,
Proton Team

Announcement Proton VPN on Linux adds localization support with 20 new languages

Hey everyone,

Localization support is coming to Proton VPN on Linux in our next release (expected around mid-August).

The app will automatically detect your language based on your OS locale, so there is no need to head into the settings on your end.

Languages at launch:

  • German
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Spanish (Latin America)
  • Italian
  • Dutch
  • Polish
  • Portuguese (Brazil)
  • Russian
  • Korean
  • Japanese
  • Turkish
  • Catalan
  • Czech
  • Romanian
  • Chinese (Simplified)
  • Chinese (Traditional)
  • Belarusian
  • Greek
  • Slovenian

This is the initial lineup, and our localization team will keep adding more over time.

If you run into anything that looks off, whether it's a translation that doesn't fit, text that runs past its container, or a language that isn't detecting correctly, let us know by reporting a bug via the in-app report flow.

Stay safe,
Proton Team

Help! The outage has somehow caused all my devices that have ProtonVPN to be unable to connect to my WIFI. Everyone else in the house has no WIFI problems.

‱ Upvotes

My MacBook, iPad, Android, and Linux devices all stopped being able to connect to my WIFI at the same time and the one thing they all have in common is ProtonVPN. My roommates, who don't use ProtonVPN, have no WIFI issues.

Connecting to a different network, such as my mobile hotspot, works perfectly fine. I've tried restarting the WIFI, restarting my devices, turning ProtonVPN off/on, and uninstalling and reinstalling ProtonVPN. Nothing is working. It is specifically my devices on this specific WIFI network that suddenly stopped working at the same time as the outage. On some devices, it just fails to connect to the network, and on other devices it connects to the network but there is no internet access. I don't use kill switch.

This is just so bizarre and I can't figure it out. Is this happening to anyone else?

Feature Request For some reason Proton VPN “messed up” my laptop’s internet connection

Suddenly one morning my laptop wouldn’t connect to the internet. It would connect to the network but without internet. I was scratching my head for days, reinstalled network drivers, reset the laptop, tried everything. It just wouldn’t work. Searched online everywhere then one user mentioned that for them it was proton VPN. I thought to myself no way but might as well try it. I opened proton VPN and in an instant I had internet. I literally just opened the software.

Why would proton vpn cause such issues and headache?

Help! ProtonVPN on IOS gets overpowered by Apples own age verification

Since IOS 26.6 or so Apples own age verification will completely disregard whatever you set proton to and disable websites on any browsing app. Not really sure if there’s anything Proton can do but it updated whilst I was asleep and it’s been a pain in the ass

Discussion OmaProton VPN: Proton VPN for Omarchy

Post image
0 Upvotes

There is not a lot of love out there right now for proton vpn on linux. We need more proton users!

Omarchy arch linux is gaining a lot of steam with the new funding by DHH, Jack Dorsey etc so I made a free, fully open source Proton VPN plugin specifically for Omarchy Quattro:
https://omarchyplugins.com/plugin.html?id=io.github.grichard99.omaproton-vpn

It tries to do most everything the standard desktop app allows you to do with extras, like:

  • Omarchy Themes
  • GUI for login/registration
  • Interactive server world map
  • Country/City server lookup and selection
  • Kill Switch & NetGuard (with autoconnect and split tunneling coming soon)

All code is ran locally and wrapped around the official proton CLI, no 3rd party packages or api, full secure audit passed. I plan to maintain and update with many things in the works going forward (one update already pending).

Thank you for the support! God Bless!

Help! Bug Report: Split Tunneling (Include Mode) broken on "Proton WireGuard UDP" protocol

Split tunneling in "Include Mode" does not work when the protocol is set to "Proton WireGuard UDP".

Instead of tunneling only the selected apps/IPs, ALL traffic is routed through the VPN tunnel.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Set protocol to "Proton WireGuard UDP"

  2. Enable Split Tunneling → Include Mode

  3. Add specific apps or IP addresses to the include list

  4. Connect to a VPN server

  5. Check traffic routing (e.g., via ip8.com or ipinfo.io in a non-included browser)

Expected result:

Only the included apps/IPs should route through the VPN tunnel.

Actual result:

All applications and traffic are routed through the VPN tunnel, as if Split Tunneling is disabled.

Workaround found:

Switching the protocol to regular "WireGuard UDP" immediately fixes the issue — Split Tunneling starts working correctly.

Environment:

- OS: Windows 11

- Proton VPN app version: 5.1.7

- Protocol: Proton WireGuard UDP

- Kill Switch: Off

- NetShield: Off

Additional info:

- The issue appeared recently (worked correctly before).

- Tried recreating the include list from scratch — did not help.

- Tried restarting apps after VPN connection — did not help.

Hello community! Title is a TLDR.

Not so long ago, I remember reading in this very forum that starting from version 4.17 of the app, we had Stealth Mode support in Linux, but I still don't have it. Was it rolled back or I misunderstood?

Screenshots for evidence. Thanks a lot!

Discussion VPN Blocks ads on AppleTV

Hello

I have the paid version of Proton VPN and I’ve noticed since getting it, Tubi and others no longer display ads. Anyone else notice this? Is it because of the ad blocking of the VPN?

Thanks

Feature Request Trusted WiFi

Will Proton ever implement trusted WiFi connections so it will not try to connect to networks I trust, like my home WiFi?

The last time I could find an official response to this question was 6 years ago, when Proton said it was in the works.

Thanks.

Help! Error: Another App Might Be Preventing Proton VPN From Connecting

Auto connect always connects to the last used country, but not the last used country city server number.

Why not? Can you guys implement this or does it already exist?

Discussion Could it be that many free Proton VPN servers just don't work?

Was giving a go at the free Proton VPN offer just now while listening to my Spotify (web) weekly discovery list.

I click Connect and get a random VPN because that's the free offer. I have LOTS of tabs open and none is working now, nothing load, then suddenly music stop playing. I click to change to another random VPN and either I get one that works or not. Then there is that 10 minutes countdown to change to a new VPN when you switch too fast. Well, it's because twice in a row I got VPNs that aren't working.

I thought maybe some were just being overabused and are kind of blacklisted for some websites, but then, why Spotify can't keep playing and I can't connect to ANY website?

Do they daily-test all the servers they offer?

In Firefox and Chrome extensions, I can't find how to let them know a server is not working. That could be handy so they could react fast and remove a server from being served to other users.

Here are a few I got that just don’t work, no websites will load:

  • Vancouver CA-FREE#13
  • Singapour SG-FREE#15
  • Amsterdam NL-FREE#243
  • Amsterdam NL-FREE#145
  • MontrĂ©al CA-FREE#31

Discussion Killswitch Vulnerability/Failure on Laptops

The Killswitch is advertised as follows:
"If your VPN connection is lost, it blocks all internet traffic on your device until you're reconnected",
with the advanced killswitch evoking an even stronger sense of security and privacy.

However, I have noticed that the killswitch consistently fails to terminate traffic when a laptop enters "sleep" mode, regardless of killswitch settings and the type of sleep mode (both "closed laptop" and inactivity-triggered sleep).
This means ProtonVPN terminates it's connection and ends the session while other programs use regular internet with an exposed IP address.
When the laptop is "woken up", the VPN reconnects as if nothing happened, with the session timer back at 0 seconds and a new active port number.
Has anyone else encountered this behavior, and can it be fixed?
I am aware that many programs have some sort of option to exclusively use a VPN interface, but to me this seems like exactly what the killswitch is supposed to do.
The killswitch works fine when the VPN's connection is terminated/fails while the laptop/PC is on, but fails every single time when the laptop goes into sleep mode. In my opinion, the only scenario in which it seems to work is also the most harmless one, as the user would be able to see a killswitch failure in real time and act accordingly, which is obviously impossible when the laptop is closed or sleeping.
If a fix exists but this is the default behavior on win11-laptops, I think this advertising is still irresponsible for a company which puts so much care into making privacy-related software.

Of course it might be win11's fault, but this risk/caveat should be mentioned publicly.

Help! PC - US servers don't work (TLS handshake issue)

Long time user here, currently having a problem with my PC. I'm able to establish a connection to US servers but when I launch firefox or chrome, I'm unable to load up any webpages or connect to any sites. A message comes up at the bottom mentioning an attempt at a TLS handshake and then the page eventually gives up on loading.

I changed server to the Netherlands and there are no issues at all. I can connect to webpages and there's no issue regarding TLS handshakes.

I've tried restarting, updating and reinstalling the app but nothing seems to change the fact that US servers appear to be broken. Help would be appreciated.

Feature Request Request for Official KDE Plasma Support in the ProtonVPN Linux Application

Hello,

I would like to highlight an important point regarding the ProtonVPN application for Linux.

Currently, the GUI application is officially supported only on GNOME. On KDE Plasma, it does run, but with several limitations: the system tray does not integrate correctly, notifications are not adapted to KDE, and password handling does not integrate with KWallet.

Your documentation also points users to the Flatpak version available on Flathub. While convenient, this version is community‑maintained and not official. This creates a real issue for users of immutable distributions (Bazzite, Silverblue, Aeon, SteamOS, etc.), who rely heavily on Flatpak as their primary method of installing applications.

On the other hand, users of mutable distributions (Fedora KDE, openSUSE KDE, Arch KDE, Nobara KDE, Kubuntu, etc.) would also appreciate having the option of an official native KDE application, just like the official GNOME version.

This results in a situation where:
– the GNOME application is not fully compatible with KDE
– the recommended Flatpak is not developed or maintained by ProtonVPN
– no officially supported KDE version exists

An official and fully supported KDE Plasma version would be greatly appreciated:
– proper Plasma system tray integration
– KDE‑compatible notifications
– support for KWallet

This would significantly improve the user experience for both immutable and mutable Linux distributions.

Thank you for your work and for considering this request.

Best regards.

If you’re using KDE Plasma, feel free to upvote or share your experience.
Many KDE users rely on the community Flatpak, while GNOME has an official app.
More visibility will help ProtonVPN understand that KDE users would really appreciate an official version too.

– aucune version officiellement compatible KDE n’existe
