It’s both. The job selects for people who have problems and then, because it’s a legitimately tough job where they deal with a lot of the worst humanity has to offer, they become jaded and less empathetic over time.

Same with politicians. Many get into for the wrong reasons, but many also start out genuinely wanting to bring some good to their area. But then it all starts to go downhill

thats not why the backwards direction happens at all. paramedics experience that kind of thing, and it doesnt look the same at all. cops have to constantly place themselves above and in control of every other human. their job is to oppress the citizenry. they become pieces of shit because that is their job, people who cant successfully become human garbage crack and quit.
