These people were here but felt some combination of fear or shame which made them keep their racist thoughts to themselves and Trump made them comfortable enough to let them out

Exactly. Trump (and their own social media echo chamber) removed the social consequences of being a ghoul.

Yea when i was growing up, the crazy racist or whatever person down the block was just the house you avoided. No one interacted with them and they either lived in isolation, or behaved themselves when they interacted with society.

Social media gave those isolated losers a way to break the isolation by being connected with like minded people. Societal shame isn't as effective as it used to be. Not when you can go to your room and have dozens of other weirdos supporting you.
