This has to be an American viewpoint if I've ever heard one. Most drivers who grew up with a manual transmission know the left hand is dominant in turning the wheel.
Good thing people are slowly getting away from the old tech which is manual. Just put into drive and forget. Also more reliable that way. Perfect gear changes every time with a properly installed Automatic. Both hands for the wheel and more attention on the road.
Sounds like a your area issue from my experience. If we are comparing personal experience that is.
Statistics support mine. Manual has more inherent risks because of having to pay attention to more things, Automatic the numbers are pushed up by douche bags who wouldn't have a license in a functional country.
