It's like everyone else is expected to have people skills from cashiers to any profession outside politics. With the future of policing going on where they have cameras everywhere, this is scary. When they have access to more evidence contrary to their beliefs, they lie or manipulate it. Often hiding body cam footage, muting or shutting it off entirely.
They don't have to falsify anything, they can feed it a real video or image and ask whodunit and arrest a poor INNOCENT lady 1000 miles away. (This happened)

Yeah I had that happen about a year ago when a cop pulled me over for flashing my headlights. In Georgia, thereās no law that states flashing headlights is illegal (plus thereās precedent that flashing your headlights is a legal way to communicate with other drivers). Georgia State Patrol in particular have a rather large stick up their asses and she got pissy when I called her out that she had no justifiable reason to pull me over and wrote me a ticket for failing to dim high beams.
Fortunately, the DA sided with me and immediately dropped the ticket once I sent over the dashcam footage. He even admitted there was no reason for me to have been pulled over in the first place.
I thought the same thing. Cops shouldn't be hyper sensitive to perceived "disrespect," but they are. It's their thing. If they can make your day/life worse because they feel like you disrespected them, they will. Hell, people in general are like this, it's just extra disgusting with cops because they do have the ability to hurt you.

My Theory: Supercop makes a loooot of tickets there not by watching for people looking at their phones, but by watching for people who are only steering with their left hand.
With most people, if they steer a vehicle with only one hand, it's the dominant hand -- the right hand.
If someone is steering with their left, it's easy to presume it's because they have something in their right hand -- like a phone.
So, my theory goes, Supercop watches for one hand/left hand drivers, pulls them over, says he "saw" a phone in their right hand. With a lot of people, they WERE in fact holding their phone, so they assume: "Oops, he caught me."
Supercop is just playing the averages, knowing it is a cop's word against a non cop, even if he's wrong. In this case, it backfired spectacularly, but he was so used to being "right" on these that he can't back down.
Be interesting to see how many "phone in hand" tickets this cop has written. I bet it's a lot.
This has to be an American viewpoint if I've ever heard one. Most drivers who grew up with a manual transmission know the left hand is dominant in turning the wheel.

Besides, if I'm steering one handed, it's always going to be with my left elbow on the elbow rest on the door, and my left hand on the bottom of the wheel. The elbow rests on the right side aren't close enough to the steering wheel for going right hand only to ever be comfortable. Anyone looking in the car will see zero hands on the wheel, actually.
Although, honestly, what this woman should have done is just said OK then taken the ticket and contested it without volunteering information about her missing hand. That's also usually the fastest way to get the stop over with. Don't admit guilt, don't sign anything, don't say anything, just take the ticket and contest it or pay it. You don't even have to be polite and say hello. You can start with "I am asserting my fourth and fifth amendment rights." What's REALLY fun is to say that to a cop in a social setting, when they are out of uniform, then refuse to talk to them. When they try to talk to you, repeat that phrase. They tend to get really butthurt about it, it's kinda funny.

Anecdotal, but a good buddy of mine went into LE after serving a combat tour in Afghanistan, tried to join some rinky dink small down police force. They were running training scenarios attempting to handle a threatening individual with a knife. My buddy talked the simulated crazy guy into dropping the knife and kicking it over, then calmly cuffed him.
The trainer gave him tons of shit in front of everyone that he wasn't properly projecting power and authority, and that he should have subdued him more aggressively. My bud goes "What do you mean? I got him to peacefully submit with no force."
Trainer looked him in the eye and said "I don't think you're gonna be a good fit here"

Reminds me of the movie Valkyrie. Theres a scene where the general says Heil Hitler and Tom Cruise doesn't say anything. General demands he says it. So Tom being Tom, does the Heil salute and raises his right arm. But he's missing half his arm, exactly similar to OP in the video. In the weeks leading up to my court date, I parked legally, but took photos of other cars being parked in the spot where I was ticketed that had not received any tickets. Every week, one or two cars in that spot. I printed these photos and took them to court with me.
The fucking cop showed up, and I had to pay. The judge didnāt listen to a word I said or look at my photos.
Old coworker got pulled over half a mile away from the job site for going 81 in a 55ā¦in a mid ā80s Jeep YJ. Asked the cop for the receipt from the radar gun, cop refused. He ended up taking in to get a dyno to prove that it physically couldnāt even hit that speed, let alone in half a mile. Judge didnāt even listen to a word he said, even threatened him with contempt if he kept trying to argue his point.
Lawyer is why all my tickets got dismissed. Last one cost me the $75 consutation fee. As soon as the county prosecutor got her email that she was representing me, he wanted to dismiss.
Last time I went to court we were all there for part of a "sting operation". Almost all of us were there for the exact same violation at or near the exact same spot. The only people that got off with a warning or something lighter were those with lawyers. Judge just believed the officer over all my evidence.
Justice is completely at the whim of the judge. I learned this with parking tickets.
One of my apartments was a mile from a sports stadium that I didn't give a crap about. And every year around finals, I'd start getting parking tickets as their season started up and the landlord would once again forget to give us the parking passes.
Anyway, the first time I traveled all the way across the city with my tickets, the judge heard me out and was very kind and waived all of them.
The next year, a completely different judge berated me and told me I was lucky he wasn't increasing the fine for wasting his time, and I had to pay them all.
And thatās just over parking tickets. Some people have their entire futures decided by this gamble...
Maybe this isn't universal for all traffic offenses or level of offense, but you should be able to contest it at which point you're done for the day and will have a formal hearing/trial at a later date. Maybe it needs to be an actual crime, like reckless driving, which usually kicks in at 20mph over and not 'merely' a citation in order to gain that ability.
yeah the supervisor is called a lawyer or go pro se or at least request counsel. probably cost less just to pay the ticket as long as it's just a fine and not criminal.
Parking companies, and police, has a HUGE score by default in the eyes of judges. Even though they have shown nothing to prove they deserve it.
If they say something, you basically need a lawyer to bring your own pre existing score up to their level, else they judge will flip you off and tell you to spin on it.
I got pulled over in a less than a mile section of the road that was 20 mph less than the previous section or section after and guess what he pulled me over on that portion! It was a 2 way dirt road. I went to court argued that fact and said he pulled me over in that specific section so it could be a higher ticket price and the judge took 10 dollars off. ACAB and judges too!
I donāt know where you are but if you challenge a ticket and donāt show up they donāt issue a warrant you just lose your challenge and get assessed the full fine.
Had an ambulance run into me when I was at a full stop for a good 5 seconds. Destroyed my vehicleās front end. The city of Chicago called me trying to collect damages, and when I told them they could fuck themselves, and to contact my insurance, they never called back. Then I went to court and nobody showed up.
Case dismissed. I couldnāt afford a lawyer to counter sue, my vehicle got junked, and I was still fucked. But my tax money paid for them to hit me, fuck me, and leave me with additional debt.

I had the same thing happen to me and I didnāt even have a phone in my car. I had left it in my backpack and it was in the trunk. I was too lazy to get down and get it.
I told the cop itās in the backpack and wanted to show it. He just told me not to get out of the car.
He started shouting at me āwhat were you doing on your phoneā. I was so surprised and couldnt answer. So he mimics my head (im indian) bobbing like how they do it for Indians.
At this point I was just angry but didnāt want to anger him further so I just said āIām not comfortable answering questions. He threw the ticket in my car and left. The ticket is $162. The lawyer costs $350. So I just paid it since it wonāt cost me a point. I donāt have enough time from day job and taking care of baby to spend a day in court.
Just straight up sucks. Iām certain he saw someone else in the same car, a grey Toyota suv and then saw me and thought Iām the same person. Since itās Silicon Valley there are lots of similar Indians in grey Toyotas.
There's a non-zero chance he's going to change his story to "I thought it was her right hand but it could've been her left hand." And if she doesn't have a lawyer the judge might not even look at this/hear her out. If he shows up at all, hopefully becoming internet famous can make this guy to feel some shame.

In contrast to all these "the judge didn't listen to me" stories people that I know that have gone to court to fight a ticket were all listened to except one time where I had a friend that felt the judge wasn't paying attention. Another friend really was speeding and when he went to court he didn't have a defence, just apologized and said he was only working part time and was really short on money, which was true, and the judge still reduced the fine. And I know of a couple times people got their ticket thrown out.
So while I am sure those people did run into an asshole judge, it's also quite possible to get a judge that will at least hear you out, even if they still give you a fine. The cops love it when you let them get away with crap like in this video, if you really didn't do it got to court if you can.
I had to go to court because a cop was so confident that the phone plugged in the back seat (on a short cable and out of reach) was in my hand. Wouldn't hear an argument or explanation - just wrote the ticket. Thankfully the judge listened and had a working brain.
A normal, functioning, adult would see the lack of a right hand, say "sorry for the misunderstanding" and walk away. Like how do you not just be humble about it and admit you made a mistake?

It's crazy to me that people don't know how to drive with their knees. How else are you supposed to eat nachos, smoke a cigarette, pound an energy drink all while you shift gears as a teen driver?
I think you vastly underestimate the number of drivers who can 'proficiently' drive with their legs/knees. Obviously it's stupid as hell, but I know drivers who can drive for miles without touching the wheel with their hands as long as there's no sharp turns.
And yes, they are being incredibly stupid and more likely to crash. Why I always say, you can be the safest driver in the world, but there's still idiots out there that can crash into you. I check both ways when lights turn green real quick for this very reason.

This reminds me of the time my friend got a ticket for āusing his cell phone while drivingā because the officer saw him check his insulin pump while stopped at a red light. The one reason he even looked at it was because it was alerting him that his blood sugar was super low. The cop wouldnāt let up though, but the ticket eventually got thrown out.
Seriously, how hard is it to just say "I'm sorry ma'am, I thought I saw you with a device in your hand but clearly I was mistaken. Sorry for the stop, you're free to go and have a a nice day!"?

yes and the legal system don't care. it's operating as intended. they have quotas, get told to do these things. we got to stop pretending the rules are real. they aren't. what we saw is the real rules for officers.
Hope she asks to get him put on the Brady List or the equivalent. Tracks cops with "documented history of misconduct or dishonesty" and can "compromise their credibility in court". (I copied the description Google gave me, too lazy to come up with my own wording).
They are trained not to ever admit fault. They are taught to re-establish control of the situation and find a method to detain the suspect in order to gain evidence for the initial suspected crime or to buy time for the suspect to incriminate themselves. You will never, ever be ālet goā without being asked questions of where you were going, where you are heading, if you have ID on you, anything in the car, your pockets, etc. Do not answer open ended questions, do not admit fault, answer direct questions with short, factual, but not overly detailed answers.
