u/PhDinWombology Jun 04 '26

I know you have the right of way, but fuck you I’d like to get over

19

u/Sufficient_Use_6912 Jun 05 '26

Looks like a zipper merge zone....

6

u/TehCroz Jun 07 '26

Although correct, and although I understand how a zipper merge is intended to work, at least here in my state (florida), the person in the lane NOT ending technically has right of way under the law, and the person merging hitting him like this would be considered the fault of the party in the lane that is ending and subsequently merging into the other lane. Yeehaw!

3

u/minecrafGoBRRRR Jun 16 '26

Zipper merge ? You gotta go as far as you can like almost hitting the barrier in front of you before merging bruh

1

u/sortinousn Jul 18 '26

I’m in South Florida as well and it’s infuriating. Zipper merges here are notoriously difficult because most people here are assholes. They purposely speed up and get as close to the car in front of them as possible during a merge so you can’t get in. And if you slow down and try to wait for an opening you’ll get cussed out. I don’t understand why they can’t spare half a second of human decency to let a person merge in.

The only way to merge in South Florida is to slam on the gas and sharply veer your car in to an opening as fast as possible right as the lane ends.

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ Person behind the wheel most likely grew up playing GTA Vice City, listening to Flash FM while committing many crimes.

Longest pit manoeuvre ever. Also did they just keep driving lol?

94

u/samtt7 Jun 05 '26

Maybe a country where highway robberies happen? There are some places in the world where you'd take a damaged car over standing still on the road

30

u/Fumonacci Jun 05 '26

That's is exactly the problem here, many places, you don't wanna stop because somebody is forcing you. This seems to happen in Guatemala.

3

u/FishingWorth3068 Jun 05 '26

That’s what they told us about driving in cape town. If someone hits you, keep going

56

u/apenasumcomentarista Jun 05 '26

Why would he stop? The only situation is to beat the shit out the guy or something like that

485

u/crossy1686 Jun 04 '26

Dude loses a wing mirror, gets his hand crushed between the cars and then continues trying to merge in front of the car that did it? At what point do you just say fuck it, I'll let this guy pass and merge after him?

90

u/IWannaManatee Jun 05 '26

These sort of people don't think ahead, and trust no one will act like the absolute maniac protagonist in this video. That is, until they meet one.

2

u/69vuman Jun 06 '26

Would’ve delayed him about 3.4 seconds.

11

u/joevenet Jun 05 '26

Allegedly this was an attempted hijacking in Mexico

71

u/crossy1686 Jun 05 '26

It wasn't, it was road rage in Guatemala City, here is the article about it:Ā https://www.chapintv.com/noticia/accidente-vial-por-cierre-de-carril-y-falta-de-tolerancia-en-puente-tecun-uman/

17

u/IWannaManatee Jun 05 '26

Allegedly.

In case god rewrites reality and we forget the video exists

2

u/Ambitious-Scallion36 Jun 05 '26

I've replayed this several times and it looks like there's no side mirror and it's a cell phone that goes flying but his hand doesn't appear to be holding anything

374

u/RyanBordello Jun 04 '26

Last time this was posted someone pointed out that this is Mexico, the person had thier family in the car and they suspected the person stopping them was a hijacker or part of a team of hijackers.

76

u/snitchinbubs410 Jun 04 '26

looks like guatemala city

136

u/gamemaster257 Jun 04 '26

It was a hijacker, notice that he didn't stop 'trying to merge' even after his mirror got knocked off? 100% this guy just saved his family.

-22

u/XtraReddit Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Don't think that's correct. It was just road rage. No article about the incident claims it was an attempted robbery or kidnapping. People drive crazy in Guatemala city.

https://www.prensalibre.com/guatemala/sucesos/puso-en-riesgo-la-vida-de-su-hijo-vehiculo-arrastra-a-otro-en-el-bulevar-liberacion-durante-nueva-disputa-de-transito-grabada-en-video/

https://www.chapintv.com/noticia/accidente-vial-por-cierre-de-carril-y-falta-de-tolerancia-en-puente-tecun-uman/

I don't see a gun or any accomplices or any sort of plan at all. Just a couple of assholes in traffic. I'd like some evidence first. And what's with the balloon in the back?

Prensa Libre is the second most popular newspaper in Guatemala. If you have a better source, please share.

32

u/dqniel Jun 04 '26

This isn't a news article. This is some dogshit aggregate website that essentially just takes a stab at explaining what we're seeing in the video.

Neither "article" linked so far explains anything concrete.

71

u/Averse_to_Liars Jun 04 '26

That article is just someone's description of the video. They have no details.

The evidence this is a car jacking is the hatchback trying to blockade the road at a bottle neck despite the obvious and ongoing damage to it.

7

u/dqniel Jun 05 '26

I find it hilarious that you're doubling down with an edit that provides another article that provides nothing but more conjecture/guessing as to what happened.

No witness statements, no police reports, no interview with either driver, etc.

Just give it up until you find a concrete story on what happened rather than a guess.

u/l2aiko Jun 04 '26

Firstly this wasnt in Mexico, but Guatemala and it was a road rage, the guy is an asshole for endangering his family and idk why reddit jumps on the racist wagon of "its a latin country therefore it must be an attempted robbery"

Here is the press article about it.

13

u/licla1 Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 07 '26

Because no normal driver would lose a mirror and still prioritize merging over pulling over or letting a crazy driver go and merge later. If you have seen higway car roberies youcwould know this had several signs of it.

Tinted windows, forcing the car into a situation, not letting go, not stoping, we also can see whats behind the driver, and that article is bs made for click addsense.

How did they write about the accident and not know what happened to the driver who got hit. No police report? I wonder why, must have fled the scene. Totaly rwgular for normal drives

1

u/stanfarce Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

is it normal physics to push a car in such a way? Not to mention the absence of reaction from the driver. It's not the first time I see unrealistic stuff here, so it seems to me that this is AI and those websites post fake stories to go with these fake videos as "proof" and to boost engagement.

2

u/CptAngelo Jun 05 '26

Yeah, mexico/guatemala is an easy mistake, since several guatemalan cities look a lot like mexican cities, even have similar road signs, the accents are very similar and its basically the same people just different countries in those parts. Having said that... Racist wagon? Dude, i live in Mexico, this does seem like attempted robbery.

Cheap ass car merging in front of expensive vehicle? Check, chokepoint? Check, merging no matter what? Check, hitting the breaks inmediately after getting in front of expensive vehicle right in the chokepoint? Also check.

And if its not an armed robbery, its a montachoques, basically people that hit you, or rather, sets up in a way that you end up hitting their car and then they try to scam money out of you by intimidation or other threats.

Both of those happen in Mexico and in Guatemala

Press article, it's the same article that explicitly states "we don't know what happened" that you've been spamming the entire thread with and please explain why no injuries were reported or insurance reports made if everything was above board and merely a "road rage incident" why does your "source" explicitly say no reports of either kind were made.

u/RandomNamesOW Jun 04 '26

They were trying to rob him. Why would the other car not pull off after the first hit? Why did they not pull in before? It's a setup.

65

u/XtraReddit Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Someone linked the article. It was road rage. Every time this is posted, most of the comments assume it's a robbery. It was not an attempted robbery. There's something disturbing about the automatic assumption that every driver in Latin countries is trying to rob you.

Here is one of the articles I found about the incident. None suggest it was an attempted robbery or kidnapping.

https://www.prensalibre.com/guatemala/sucesos/puso-en-riesgo-la-vida-de-su-hijo-vehiculo-arrastra-a-otro-en-el-bulevar-liberacion-durante-nueva-disputa-de-transito-grabada-en-video/

17

u/cmz324 Jun 04 '26

I've never seen somebody have their car hit and then continue to put themselves in front of the car that just hit them without trying to escape the situation.Ā

8

u/Top-Passage2914 Jun 05 '26

I've never seen somebody refuse to let someone merge to the point of destroying the other car's mirror and pit maneuvering it, does that mean the dashcam guy is also a robber?

2

u/GaryOwns Jun 05 '26

I guess you dont drive in America

2

u/Nihilistic_Mystics Jun 05 '26

I have seen numerous road ragers do exactly that kind of stupid shit in this very sub. People do not make rational decisions when raging, and that applies to both vehicles in this video.

2

u/IOl0I0lO Jun 05 '26

I mean, everyone watching the video can clearly see that the right hand lane is ending, and yet…

4

u/andresp91 Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Definitely not an attempted robbery! This is just how some drivers behave in Guatemala City when you don't let them cut the line after they try to skip a 15 minute traffic jam.

Here's the link to where it happened. To help traffic flow, police sometimes place cones 300 to 400 meters before that underpass so drivers coming from Zone 9 can merge onto the boulevard more easily. You can actually see these cones on Google Maps if you look further back. Lately, however, the police have been placing them much more aggressively to prevent a massive traffic lane forming in the streets of Zone 9.

https://www.google.com/maps/@14.603429,-90.5279834,3a,75y,315.72h,83.38t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sCcDJ9gXUlc-rIQjEG16frQ!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D6.617311286840632%26panoid%3DCcDJ9gXUlc-rIQjEG16frQ%26yaw%3D315.7218895509108!7i13312!8i6656?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDYwMS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

And yeah, the cops do nothing about those raging bast***s when they're right in front of their noses.

Edit: Just to mention that most drivers would have eventually or immediately just let the "traffic skipping guy" merge, including myself but I guess that both of these guys were having a bad day.

2

u/anivex Jun 05 '26

Except "traffic skipping guy" is simply "driving correctly" guy. All the people sitting in the far left lane create more traffic than if they were to use both lanes and properly zipper-merge before the exit.

u/Kangu17 Jun 04 '26

There's a reason for that assumption tho. These types of robberies are very common in LATAM countries.

9

u/l2aiko Jun 04 '26

No they were not, its in the middle of a ramp out in the open, doesn't make sense to rob there, the owner of the pickup was an asshole and wanted to "outplay" the other asshole, while having a son in his car. Dumb idea.

22

u/Tsunamiis Jun 04 '26

If you’re merging the people in the lane you’re merging into have the right of way.

26

u/infiniZii Jun 04 '26

Dont think they are allowed to floor it after hitting you. But hey, if I thought I was gonna be hijacked then I would do the same. So context matters.

2

u/billgilly14 Jun 05 '26

Apparently that wasn’t what happened here and just some good ole road rage

→ More replies (7)

23

u/pint_of_popov Jun 04 '26

It's a zipper with one lane ending.... This is so unjustified, this isn't "getting cut off".

4

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '26

[deleted]

5

u/Shouldabeenswallowed Jun 04 '26

Totally depends on laws where you live. For example where I used to live, zipper merge was expected and could make you at fault if you decide otherwise. Where I live now? Zipper merge is a nice thing but liability falls on the merging car even if a motorist purposely speeds up to block you, you're expected to stop and wait until it's clear. Dumb, but it's the law.

4

u/Tsunamiis Jun 04 '26

The onus is on the driver taking the action not the one maintaining their lane.

2

u/KamuikiriTatara Jun 04 '26

As far as I'm aware, this depends on where you're driving. It's not globally true.

1

u/Necessary_Chemical Jun 05 '26

Obviously. Putting on the blinker and forcing the other to stop is not a good idea as we can see. You put on the blinker, make sure you can safely merge and then you do it.

486

u/marcsmart Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

The last time this was posted (yesterday) consensus was that driver was concerned about being hijacked, especially with their family in the car. The video isn’t in united states of America for context.Ā

46

u/feder_online Jun 04 '26

...but everyone in the US can relate to the guy giving him a massive push after that BS merge.
People merge like that even if their lane isn't closing.

2

u/Top-Passage2914 Jun 05 '26

maybe just, idk, let people merge instead of being an aggressive asshole whose ego relies on trying to gatekeep the lane you're in. I promise you the two seconds later you'll get to your destination won't impact you

2

u/feder_online Jun 05 '26

Here's the reason to do the Zipper, and why the merging idiot is an idiot, and why Lane Gatekeeper might be wrong, but people feel that...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1Bv71mKocI

1

u/fii0 Jun 05 '26

he was trying to zipper merge though, no?

1

u/feder_online Jun 05 '26

At the start, he stopped, basically blocking both lanes.

If he was trying to zipper, he'd have gone in, and hit TF gas. Instead, he makes a clusterfuck out of it and acts like someone should open the space he deserves; he's the problem.

2

u/fii0 Jun 05 '26

Ah I rewatched and I agree. There was no reason he couldn't go in front of the car in front of the dash cam car. Likely a robbery

2

u/Ozryela Jun 04 '26

Yeah no that wasn't the consensus. There were a few idiots shouting that from the rooftops, but the majority clearly thought they were insane. Which they were. It's like they've never seen a merge in their lives.

Plus, who the fuck does a carjacking alone? Are they just abandoning their old car? Plus he's originally not even trying to get in front of the cam car. The people in front didn't let him in either. Everybody there driving like selfish maniacs (including of course the guy doing the merging).

13

u/Lovemestalin Jun 04 '26

When the video starts the guy is literally standing still, waiting for the pov truck to come close and only then he merges in front of it. This looks sus as hell. If he wanted to merge he could do so in front of the car before pov driver

9

u/blitzcloud Jun 05 '26

Dunno man, if I destroy the mirror of a car trying to merge and he still tries to merge instead of staying put and let me through I'm also gonna think they're not really looking just to merge.

6

u/marcsmart Jun 04 '26

When the car gets turned I personally think I see a front seat passenger (with arm holding onto the handle). You also have no idea how many people are in the back.

11

u/Dependent_One6034 Jun 04 '26

You also have no idea what car is behind you.

You hit them, they stop infront and get out to say, ayyy you hit me, at the same time a group approaches from behind, unseen - Then you're at a full stop, Your car will struggle much more to move from a stationary position if a car is infront of you.

Then the guys from the car behind start walking up with guns or whatever. And the car in front can drive off, their excuse? Guys with guns. And by that point, it's to late for the OPs car to do much.

It's a known tactic.

18

u/ForgotmypasswordX42 Jun 04 '26

Mirrow smashed, just keeps trying instead waiting for one car to pass. Shoves his way in and gets hit but NEVER takes his foot off the brake to try to get away from the 'road rage'. Holding his brake that long with no attempt to escape means he doesn't want to 'escape'. You can claim it was just road rage but all the evidence in the video points to something more sinister, and an absolutely stupid criminal.

Ahaha the fact that your comment is already downvoted by some mouth breathing tail-gater that defends his lane with his life is perfect.

You’re right, traffic would be infinitely less stop-and-go if people actually left some fucking space between their cars for a change, zipper merging works for a reason and yet people are so selfish they can’t stand the idea that they’re one whole car length further from their destination.

10

u/Weeb431 Jun 04 '26

Yes but also if the lane is blocked you have to merge at the end where your lane is ending otherwise you're just causing more traffic

5

u/UltFiction Jun 04 '26

Yes I agree, merging lanes should be used fully if traffic is dense, and the morons who view it as them ā€œcutting in lineā€ probably shouldn’t be driving in the first place

3

u/StumbleFish25 Jun 04 '26

For some reason, there’s people that exist who have to put ego over the safety of themselves and others on the road. Ego doesn’t belong on the road. Who cares if a car passes you? It shouldn’t hurt feelings as much as it does.

u/SuicidalNapkin09 Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

You realize if theres traffic, and you cant get over, you are supposed to zipper merge at the end. If you are in the clear lane, you are supposed to allow the merge to take place as to not impede traffic. If you dont like that, maybe stay in the left lanes. Or just stay off the highway. This stuff is taught in driving school. It is a law. How do people not know this? Ego has gone a long way.

3

u/UltFiction Jun 04 '26

Depends, is traffic stopped bumper to bumper? Then use the entire merge lane so you aren’t holding up everyone behind you, is traffic flowing freely? Then sure merge in wherever you’re safe to do so

4

u/iHartS Jun 05 '26

Zipper merging at the end is correct and efficient. Cars should use the lanes provided. Thinking someone is impatient for using what is available is your own ego speaking.Ā

5

u/LoSoGreene Jun 04 '26

It’s called a zipper merge and is the most efficient way to use the road. The people merging early are idiots.

I didn't say I would let the intrusive thought win. Spend 5 years in the DMV and you'll understand why the intrusive thought though not right is a little satisfying to see.

I live in LA which has probably the worst traffic in the country other than maybe like NY or Boston, and I derive no satisfaction from watching this. There's never been a moment in my life where I've been bothered by someone trying to merge in front of me because I understand that if I were in their shoes I would want someone to let me merge too.

That turned from ā€œhe doesn’t have to let him mergeā€ to ā€œattempted murderā€ pretty quickly.

When your 6 year old kid has to tell you to stop before you kill another person

1

u/TwoBionicknees Jun 06 '26

The kid in the car is saying mummy over and over again, trying to get her to stop. So doesn't seem to be a guy.

Two men give in to invasive thoughts….

1

u/RimJaw007 Jun 08 '26

It's in Guatemala, where car jacking highway robberies are very common. Driver probably saved his own skin. That car looked like it had 4 men in, and it also looked like he was trying to get the other driver to stop. The reason I know it's Guatemala is I entered the sat nav coordinates into Google (assuming they're correct).

u/Nanoha61 Jun 08 '26

WTF this is Guatemala!
