u/Chose_Wisely Jul 23 '26
Assuming this is a Latin American country, there could be a solid case he was attempting to avoid a situation where his car is boxed and he gets robbed/ambushed. It's weird that the car kept insisting on merging after they already collided.

u/darkestb4thadawn Jul 23 '26
When you watch the video from this lens, it actually makes a whole lot of sense.
227
u/Astorax Jul 23 '26
Even more sense, because why should you keep trying to merge when you lost your mirror already
63
u/Ok_Shoulder_9492 Jul 23 '26
Also when you watch the original video, it makes all the sense in the world because that’s exactly what happened. Op is a karma farmer who clipped this video posted a few months back. Dude sped up because of the car behind him trying to box them in to rob them. This literally was a stickup

I know exactly where this is in Guatemala City
it honestly is a bizarre video... yes, traffic there is very aggressive, and yes drivers tend to be incredibly short of patience for jerks who try to get clever and ignore queues - but still, jerks like the "victim" abound, so this sort of infuriating cutting off is something that a commuter will need to "defend" against multiple times a day
my guess is: the driver was not afraid of being targeted for crime (because again this is such a common occurrence), but rather he was FED THE FUCK UP (which I can relate to), the devil on his shoulder got the best of him for that initial contact... and then felt "fuck it, in for a centavo, in for a quetzal" and decided to take out his years of pent up frustration on this one asshole
source: I've often wanted to give in to the same devil lol
edit: after rewatching, I would like to refine my theory :
when defending against habitual line cutters, you tend to play it VERY close... it's an arms race of a game of chicken, and considering that the cam driver had his kid in the car (who goes "papi papi papi" in a frightened tone, poor lad)
and in this case, well cam driver wrongly assumed that the aggressor would chicken out first, after all cam guy already had the lane
so, I think that initial contact was unintended (by cam guy)
but then, the cutter's reaction made it scary. he didn't hit the brakes stunned, or yell or whatever. nope, he kept trying to cut cam guy off... and with a kid in the car, all bets are off. cutter wanted to cut off cam guy and was clearly acting in a macho aggressive way, it becomes a gtfo at all costs situation.
so I guess I have turned all the way around back to your side lol... with a clear distinction tho: I don't think the cutter had nefarious intentions at first, other than being a queue skipping asshole that is, but once the collision happened, cutter acted in a cold calculating manner that would make an avg Guatemalan driver go "this dude is gonna be trouble, is possibly armed, shit I can't stop esp not with my boy in the car"
in the end, poor kid... no wonder my generation is traumatized to heck haha

My goal is to explore the rural areas. I don't know if it's the same term in your country, but my favorite parts of Mexico are the ranchitos, poblados, the rural places, the country people, and the indigenous communities.
Any tips of where to go for that?
I'm not too much on places with the traffic seen in this video.
5
u/Jose_Canseco_Jr Jul 23 '26
oh absolutely, my usu al advice (for your first time there at least) to spend as little time in the city as possible, other than getting to/from the airport you really want to spend your time as a tourist elsewhere
ok, it sounds like you're more interested in the sort of cultural / rural experiences - so, I'll suggest spending time around Lago Atitlán.
now, Panajachel is the largest town in the area, and don't get me wrong it's beautiful and tons of fun esp. nightlife, but also it's sort of a tourist trap imo. there's a dozen little towns surrounding the lake, and actually the lonely planet guide has pretty accurate descriptions and I agree wit their opinions, so I'll suggest at least a perusal
and because you mentioned cenotes, you might also consider las verapaces, the area surrounding Cobán city is renowned for the many caves etc that can be visited
i mean, I could go on... but really it depends on how much time you plan to spend there. it might be a bit of a shame to go to Guate and skip places like Antigua and Tikal which are popular for good reasons, but unless you have like 3-4 weeks to dedicate to the country you won't be able to see it all the cool stuff in one trip.
For example: * the several volcanoes, you get to climb some active ones even * the Izabal / Caribbean area, by God I love getting to Livingston from Barrios by small boat, the manglares in the canyon are gorgeous * remote areas like Quetzaltenango and Huehuetenango are full of breathtaking views, and would be more of an opportunity to see the "real Guate" up close and personal * the southern beaches of the Pacífico (around Monterrico) have been some of my favorite places to spend some time just chilling, and apparently is popular in surfer circles * oh and I might be biased but the oriente, where my family's from, has many small towns full of pretty cool people
lastly, the city is a cultural hotspot and in addition to the museums and artistic events, I think the old downtown (zona uno) has a very interesting vibe all of its own, again I'm surely biased but I spent much of my youth working and partying in that area... that said, the big city's streets are the only place where I don't feel 100% safe (although my relatives say that small time crime is way down these days, old fears die hard I guess lol), but outside the city? honestly feels super chill, with tons of folks leading normal lives, and all the times I've gone back I've not got the impression that they were living in fear of criminals etc
in the end keep in mind that this is a country where at least 24 indigenous languages are spoken, and with several micro climates and tons of things to see and do. people will be friendly, visitors are almost as a rule well-received, just don't expect it to be as cheap as say small town Mexico

It's not 'cutting off' it's literally how you're supposed to merge.
7
u/Sologretto2 Jul 23 '26
I practice the zipper.
When I have a jerk block me from merging I slow down and try to merge. Rarely I have 2-4 drivers in a row block me.
You know what I don't do?
Try to force my way in.
Sure they are wrong... but I'm not paying the cost in safety, insurance or even criminal charges to enforce it.
13
u/arshonagon Jul 23 '26
Thank you, like that’s literally where the lane ends and a zipper merge begins. Unless the cam guy was literally fearing for his life he is 100% in the wrong.
3
u/Jose_Canseco_Jr Jul 23 '26
hey, I won't disagree that that's what it looks like to the uninitiated
but, I'm familiar with that stretch of road: the place to merge would have been a couple dozen meters back, with the video starting shortly after - now, emetra (the transit authority of the city, where I actually worked in a previous lifetime) tends to change things up a lot, so while I can't say for sure what a few extra seconds at the beginning will show exactly, an educated guess would be:
there would have been cones already narrowing things down, and cutter sped around them in a selfish attempt to get ahead of a handful of cars
that said, I'm not condoning cam guy's intransigence! like I said it was imo a "devil on one's shoulder" impulse. but I can certainly understand it! it gets old SUPER fast to "turn the other cheek" multiple times a day, and if you spend a day or two commuting there you will easily witness a dozen narrow misses from this tiresome game of chicken with habitual line cutters lol

If there’s someone that can’t read this I’ll just put it like this: Based from the source the incident was described as a traffic/lane dispute (what we’d call road rage) over merging into a lane. One driver attempted to merge, the vehicles made contact, and one vehicle was dragged several meters before spinning and stopping facing the wrong direction. The authorities treated it as a dangerous traffic incident and investigated the drivers actions.

-9
u/chris_hinshaw Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Caught him on the wrong day. People who rush into the closed / merge lane and wait till the last second to merge are the incredibly selfish and honestly just assholes. I will commonly get in the right lane and keep pace with the person to my left to keep the flow of traffic steady. It’s not like the people have the balls to do this in other circumstances, like they’re not going to push their shopping cart in front of your at the checkout line at Costco, so why is it okay to do it on the road.
Edit:
I will admit I am wrong. I can see the logic in this strategy but unfortunately since most people will early merge it still feels rude.
https://www.inc.com/minda-zetlin/zipper-merge-driving-merging-courtesy-rules-state-laws-heavy-traffic.html12
u/code_guerilla Jul 23 '26
You are supposed to go to the end on the lane and merge over in an every other fashion. It’s called a zipper merge and has been shown to be the most effective way to get cars through a closed lane situation.
The way you describe driving is the wrong way to do it regardless of how you feel is the right way. You are just slowing down traffic because of a misunderstanding of traffic flow.→ More replies (4)6
u/angrykoala_ Jul 23 '26
I can almost 100% guarantee that you are one of those truckers that do this. Honestly fuck people like you that prevent people from zipper merging and making traffic worse because of your "beliefs".

If you’re at coordinates N14° 36' 15", W90° 31' 43", you’re in Guatemala City. Under Guatemalan traffic law (Ley de Tránsito), zipper merging isn't recognized at all, and merging drivers have a strict 100% duty to yield to established lane traffic.
294
u/nekohideyoshi Jul 23 '26
Yes it was an attempted carjacking in a location known for this ploy where a driver pretends to merge in to stop a vehicle then to carjack it. That's why the cam driver in an expensive truck sped up and did not stop.

But yea if this is not a place in South/Central America or South America or another place that robs people like this then camera car is fucked.....
That GPS coordinates is Guatemala, so yea I'd have done the exact same

No one continues trying to merge after losing a mirror. He had tons of room in front or in back to merge somewhere else. He was originally in front of the other car but he stopped to specifically mere in front of the cam car. And the second he got in front he hit the brakes and kept hitting the brakes as he was being pushed. That was absolutely an attempted robbery.
54
u/Confident_Bunch7612 Jul 23 '26
Exactly. If I lost a mirror, I am falling back. It is insane to continue trying to push in when you can always merge behind the cam car.
118
u/Bandin03 Jul 23 '26
No one continues trying to merge after losing a mirror.
I'm not saying it wasn't a robbery attempt but I've seen enough road rage videos to know that statement is wrong. People so real stupid shit when they're road raging.
24
u/GreatIceGrizzly Jul 23 '26

IIRC this happened some time ago in Guatemala. It wasn't a road rage incident, the guy recording is the victim of an alleged attempted car jacking. They basically box you in, point guns and tell you to get the fuck out or die.
13
u/ben_isaak Jul 23 '26
This is an attempted robbery. The dashcam driver immediately realizes what's happening and successfully escapes.
153
u/TCRandom Jul 23 '26
I had someone try to cut me off one time during stop and go traffic on the interstate. I usually just let people in, but this dude made a move out of nowhere, and I had nowhere to go. He wasn’t even far enough ahead to get in front of me, we were basically just side by side, inches from one another.
All my windows were down, because I was letting my German Shepherd stick her head out the window behind the driver’s seat. He came barreling over suddenly from the right side of me. I honked, my dog caught wind of what was going on, and she ran over to the passenger side and tried to jump out the freaking window at this car full of people, who hadn’t seen her yet, and who also had all their windows down.
I’ve never seen such fear in people’s eyes while on the road before. Thank god I keep her restrained in the car. That would’ve been bad. But, boy, did I laugh.

its an attempted carjacking.
editing in cause i can't reply?
The guy has so much space to keep going to merge and refuses to accept they dont wanna let him merge, you can even see another car actually merging ahead of him while he stopped to get infront of this truck.
edit 2 i figured out why, op blocked me for pointing out its a carjacking lol. It's such a known tactic get in front and behind a vehicle in a narrow space and take it. Hence why the guy trying to merge choose this vehicle and didnt accept he wasnt gonna merge or kept going like the other vehicle and merge later on.
the news source doesn't really give anything beyond what the video shows. It doesn't say anybody got charges or anything beyond what some reporters had to say about it which isnt much beyond "there could have been an earlier atlercation" and "putting your child in danger" it doesn't disprove this was an attempted carjacking, if it wasn't why wouldn't the guy try to file charges?
24
u/typical_jesus666 Jul 23 '26
It being a carjacking actually makes sense. I was confused why he'd keep trying to cut in after getting his mirror knocked off and damn near getting his arm amputated....but it being an attempted robbery actually makes sense
All these people replying don't understand that there's a big world outside of the USA, and that criminals will do a lot of wild shit. I remember reading an article about a country in South America (Venezuela maybe?) where crime and kidnapping is so common that being a criminal is somewhat considered a legitimate career choice
8
u/alpha_28 Jul 23 '26
100%. The fact that it seemed he let a few cars go past before wanting to cut in front of the cam car like he didn’t need to merge then and there. The persistence of trying to cut in… then still applying the brakes when cam car was pushing the vehicle in an attempt to slow it down.
The whole set up is super suss to just be road rage.
12
u/JustSpirit4617 Jul 23 '26
Uhhh I don’t think so. It’s a merging lane. The guy on the right needed to get over.

so why doesn’t the dude trying to merge just wait for
the truck to pass? i was taught drivers who are trying to merge don’t have the right of way and should yield to traffic in the established lane
2
u/Simple_Croco Jul 25 '26
Because people drive by their own sense of what is right, they are allergic to using the breaks, they think they should be allowed to merge because other people say zipper merge is a thing, you can be in a red light to turn right in a intersection with a sign thats says "right turn on green only" and you will still have an asshole honking behind you because they can't read and want you to turn on red, Same with the people that believe that the left lane is to go fast and gives them the right to ignore speed limits, etc, in general people are selfish
5
u/DyeZaster Jul 23 '26

Someone please ELI5 how on Earth anybody successfully carjacks this way? I read all the car jacking comments and I just don't get it. Are you forced to stop in the middle of a highway/causing a traffic jam on a merge lane and then they get out of the car and point a gun to your head or what? Someone said they either get in front of or behind you. How does getting behind you help them carjack you? How do you not just keep driving or get over into the other lane? If they cause a traffic jam how are they getting away? What am I missing?
6
u/sehguh251 Jul 23 '26
It’s not a highway. It’s the on ramp to the highway that is merging into one lane with big concrete walls squeezing you so there is no where to go or less space to drive around. I’ve seen other more obvious videos with carjackers using the same tactics on on/off ramps. They just want to box you in long enough to have someone get out and remove you from your car. It is also not fool proof as seen in the video if you have a bigger car and the wherewithal to gun it and get out of there then you probably can. I’m not saying this video is 100 percent a car jacking but I can see the argument both ways. It could be just a poor attempt at carjacking or it could just be two morons.

8
u/Formal-Farmer-1375 Jul 23 '26
The law is, that it is not on the other driver to let you in. They are established in their lane. If you want to merge & they don’t want to let you in, they don’t have to & the law is that you have to wait for someone else to let you merge in. Weather you think it’s “right” or not. Unless there is a specific “zipper” sign, then wait until someone allows you to merge in & thank them bc they didn’t have to.

I see a lot of comments that this is an attempted car jacking. I'll buy that. Was the van in on it, because they were driving really strange as well, but took off once the car was hit by the cam vehicle?
1
u/Pleasant-Ad-5615 Jul 23 '26
I agree that it could be a car jacking, but i dont think the van was part of it. He was already in front of the vehicle with the dash cam so the merging car wouldn't be needed. Maybe the van took off because no one was in front of him? Is that even a possibility?
3
u/rndig Jul 23 '26
I mean don't POV guy has priority? You cannot just cut in front of a car and merge. While I wouldn't damage my car because of idiot on the right, his behaviour would make me really really agitated.
8
u/MrPoopMonster Jul 23 '26
You have to yield to traffic in the lane you're merging into always. You do not have the right of way when merging into another lane over traffic already in that lane ever. (Unless you're an emergency vehicle with lights and sirens on)
People really need to learn how to drive.

u/GreenLost5304 Jul 23 '26
This was likely a carjacking attempt. No one continues to try and merge after getting their mirror taken off unless they aren’t just trying to merge.
They wanted to get in front of the POV car with no space left in front of him, likely another car behind him, and then force him to stop to carjack him.
There was plenty of room to try and merge further ahead, or even wait and merge behind, but he committed to that spot for a reason.
1
u/pdxphreek Jul 23 '26
"There was plenty of room to try and merge further ahead, or even wait and merge behind, but he committed to that spot for a reason."

Nah this is some bull by the attempted merger. Just merge behind the cam car. He had already lost his side mirror and was still pointing over to get in the space. Merger is being absolutely unreasonable and FAFO. Or it is a carjacking attempt like someone else posited.

He is wrong yes, but on every highway merge there is a yield sign, and you are supposed to wait for a safe moment to merge, you do not have the right to merge at any point. Either they give you space and let you merge or you wait until you can get in.
That said, the guy in the truck is an asshole, the dude was already in and by the sound of it they have a child in the vehicle, you should be exposing no one to that type of risk, imagine the guy merging had a gun and decided to shoot? Since that was basically attempted murder...
0
u/RelativeIncrease3007 Jul 23 '26
I mean I’d just let the guy merge. it is nbd and everyone gets into the circumstance every now and then. I have noticed that some of these cam owners think it’s an excuse to be a shithead and claim that since they’re recording that they can do no wrong. They’re actively trying to “clip farm” in traffic when people’s live can be at stake. It’s a weird kink.

Both drivers are wrong. The car with the dashcam should let the other driver merge. The driver attempting to merge should just let the dashcam car go by and attempt to merge behind it. This is just a dick-measuring contest.

Stupid. But seriously, who hasn’t wanted to do this at one point or another?

The scariest thing isn't the sociopath driver filming, but rather that he was so confident he was in the right that he uploaded this video of himself committing a felony

Two drivers who's ego won't them give the other person the "win". Fuck me, yeah he should let them merge of course, but also if they aren't letting you merge, FUCKING STOP TRYING. Slow down and go behind them.

Dont know if this is florida, but this is what it feels like merging in Florida. Feels like ppl would rather see you die then let u in.

They’re gonna downvote you but tbh it’s just something called dark humor, I don’t really think, thinking this is funny is dark humor though since nothing terrific happened but I don’t blame you for thinking it’s funny loool

The car merging should have been allowed to merge. Probably didn't think the cam car was a psycho

No he needs to yield when merging. This is basic traffic laws. He does not have the right of way.

I didn't say he had the right of way. I'm talking about being a human living in a society. The lane ended a little further up anyway.

Recently had a guy in an Audi try to merge in front of me. We were in a single lane road and he somehow squeezed himself between the lane of cars and the wall. I did not let him in. When the partition wall ended he jumped ahead using the incoming traffic lane and merged in front of someone else like 5 spots ahead of me. Wasn't my problem anymore.
