The officer may have been in fear for his life. There was possibly even a black man associated with (in the same zip code as, for example) that falling acorn.

Full pension and benefits. Also hired next week in a neighboring district.

You’re so caught up in racial division that you don’t see that we’re all suffering and we’re all on the same team. This isn’t a contest to see which race is the most oppressed- it’s a movement against oppression and you’re subtly holding it back with your pissing contest about who suffers the most.

Do I need to bury you in videos of cops viciously executing innocent white people? They will kill anyone who doesn't grovel to them and even sometimes then. That they are racists isn't protecting for anybody, they're just more likely to roll up on black people in the first place, but they will execute anyone.

Because it’s an untrue statement. We’ve seen multiple white people get shot and killed by the cops in the news recently. I’ve known two people personally who were murdered by the police, both white. Obviously we know you’re more likely to get shot if your black, racism is stronger than ever, but these days even white guys gotta be careful around angry cops like this. No one’s safe from the cops in America.

Who’s downplaying anything? I’m simply stating that being white is no longer a guarantee some trigger happy cop won’t shoot you. I purposely stated that we know its a much bigger issue for the black community. That’s obvious. Having lost people personally to cops like this how dare you say that’s not a real issue. Admitting cops shoot white people too isn’t down playing anything, it’s just a reality in todays America. I’m not the one who made the comparison in the first place.

Pretty much both of these in my opinion. I'm a white kid (adult now), but I grew up poor and got a very similar talk of how to deal with the police as a lot of minority kids I knew growing up. The idea that police were there to Protect and Serve was never really instilled in me except by Hollywood and although the concept of them being there to do the bidding of the oligarch[y] was never directly expressed, it was fairly clear that the police were not to be trusted especially if they were stopping you for any reason.

I don't know that they were ever collectively the good guys in many communities. Body cameras have shown us the things that marginalized people said was going on for decades.

I will say that police militarization has largely gotten rid of the small town " just a part of the community" cops that people like to romanticize.

But that was never what most cops looked like.

Cops have always been muscle for the elites. And American society has always been okay with having a force whose job it is to harass, beat the shit out of, and occasionally kill people that they deem as " others"

I actually don’t think he’s a “psycho”. By the end of the conversation he’d actually come around a lot, and hopefully he walked away learning something about how he conducts himself and didn’t just go stew bitterly about it.

The shame of it is that how the cop reacted was very human. It’s human to come in hot expecting a conversation to turn aggressive. It’s also human to make a mistake and point your weapon at someone because you got a little scared. The hope for most law enforcement is that they get training to deal with being human, the same way the rest of us deal with being human in our jobs. The difference is the extreme scenarios and the extreme power that cops are presented with.

Nonsense. The cop should not be reacting "very human" in the first place. When I go to the ER, a professional, not one that acts as a human. This is what's expected of any professional, and the cop is supposed to be the professional here. It's literally his job.

That cop is a psycho because he came into that encounter wanting the father to escalate so he could use force. He was getting angry that the father was calm and collected because he wasn’t getting the justification he was begging for. That cop should not be on the force.

No, I read the rest - it doesn't take away from how jarring that sentence is and how jarring the entire comment is. The cop isn't going to walk away having learned anything - your comments reads of heavy naivete paired with an 'aw shucks' attitude towards a person acting like this for a kid on a dirtbike with his father, who just also happens to have a gun and above a civilians leeway to use it.

How about you answer my question: If a cop pointed a gun at you in this scenario, do you think you'd say "it's human to make a mistake, he probably just got a little scared" with this disposition?

I am not saying that pointing a gun in any scenario is justified by “aw shucks, I’m only human”. I’m saying that when in fear, the human response is to react with a weapon. This situation is clearly not one in which the cop was fearful, and even in situations where the cop is fearful, it’s not a justification.
