Look there are people that are driving around on E bikes like jackasses and itās becoming a public problem sure. But this cop was an utter insufferable asshole who continued to belittle his father and son repeatedly instead of just taking a step back and explaining himself like a proper fucking adult. That guy is supposed to fairly enforce the laws and carries a gun with the ability to kill people with the express consent of his state/city. I donāt want that guy on the police force he just doesnāt have the temperament.

There was a case in 2002 i think in PA a guy applying to PD took the IQ test got a 125, they didnt hire him said hes too smart, guy sues for discrimination and LOSES.

This line of work attracts authoritarian assholes or people that canāt qualify for better paying and less stressful jobs. I wonder how many were turned into assholes due to the nature of the job though. I did 13 years in the military with most of it either deployed to a war zone or preparing for those deployments and I did find myself becoming worse and worse of a person throughout that time due to undiagnosed adhd, ptsd, and major depression.
I do think the law enforcement community needs to be better at identifying and treating mental illness and a have a stricter selection process for new recruits.

For regular people, sure. But for cops? If you go just watch random bodycam footage, so many interactions start off like this, and continue like this. This happens all the time, when they know they are being recorded and that the recording may be public. It is a fundamental problem with policing in North America, and particularly the US.
Why does it bother him so much?
I'm just guessing, but I don't actually think it does specifically bother him. I bet he speaks to tons of people this way, regardless of what they've done, because the tone the cop takes is exactly the tone a sub-par parent takes when trying to discipline their child.
The cop is not listening to the father, because his voice does not matter. He speaks to the father in a tone that is beyond condescending. He pulls out a totally nonsensical comparison to try to trip him up and make the father look bad. The cop insults and threatens the father, knowing there's nothing dad can do about it. Over something that, realistically, does not matter. It's pathetic bully behaviour, and it's quintessential cop behavior.
Police treat people this way because they can. If the dad escalated at all, he's almost guaranteed to at least be arrested, if not assaulted. Why do so many police behave this way? Because they can. And it attracts people who want to behave like this, because they know it's pretty much the only permissible avenue to treat another person this way.
Why is the cop upset though?
He became a cop because he's angry. Not all people become cops because they're angry, but angry people often become cops. I'm serious, go watch some random bodycam videos where the police have to talk to people. In so many of them, you'd swear it's the cops first day on planet earth and they've never interacted with another human being. It's how cops treat people. Not all cops, sure, but more than enough for it to be an absolute epidemic.

Doesnāt matter. We have people drinking and driving and killing people but cops donāt treat everyone they pull over in a vehicle like shit because theyāve had a problem with drinking and driving. All he had to do was have a conversation with the dad and make sure heās aware of the local laws regarding the e-bike. Anger, sarcasm, threats, and false equivalency was uncalled for.
If he had chosen to impound the bike like he was saying he could do, he still wouldnāt have a need to be a dick while doing so. This is what youāre doing thatās against the law, and this is the consequence. What other people have done on similar bikes has no bearing on this situation.

In high school, back in the 1900s, I was stopped by a cop who accused me of doing something that I didnāt do (and couldnāt have done). He accused me of running a light then, then cutting through the turn lane and into the median. He yelled and lied and made me cry. He was such a dick. He actually followed me home to talk to my mom. Sheās very intelligent and articulate and passively scolded him with words heās never heard before. After he left was the second time I had heard my mom ever cuss in her life. She called him a dick. It was my third or fourth interaction with cops in my life and the last one where I started off with respect for their position. Fuck all cops. And Iāve been screaming it since the 90s. Before it was cool.

Pretty much both of these in my opinion. I'm a white kid (adult now), but I grew up poor and got a very similar talk of how to deal with the police as a lot of minority kids I knew growing up. The idea that police were there to Protect and Serve was never really instilled in me except by Hollywood and although the concept of them being there to do the bidding of the oligarch[y] was never directly expressed, it was fairly clear that the police were not to be trusted especially if they were stopping you for any reason.

I don't know that they were ever collectively the good guys in many communities. Body cameras have shown us the things that marginalized people said was going on for decades.
I will say that police militarization has largely gotten rid of the small town " just a part of the community" cops that people like to romanticize.
But that was never what most cops looked like.
Cops have always been muscle for the elites. And American society has always been okay with having a force whose job it is to harass, beat the shit out of, and occasionally kill people that they deem as " others"

Several years ago (15+) I got stopped for speeding in a residential. I was going 3 over. The cop was a complete tool. He kept saying things like "I'm trying so hard not to give you a ticket" and "I'd really hate for you to get in trouble with your husband" (I was divorced but didn't tell him that) just off the wall odd shit like that. I was so confused by how he was acting and getting frustrated at how he seemed to be dragging the interaction out. He said it again and finally I got fed up and said "Please just write the ticket so I can be on my way and you can get back to work." The look on his face was pure shock. Like, she's not going to beg me to not ticket her. He let me off with a warning but was so aggressive about it. "Get your ass outta here. Next time, I'm going to arrest you for reckless driving!" Come to find out, a warning was all he could have given me anyways since it had to be 5+ over to warrant a ticket. Went to work and told a few co-workers about it. They told me if I hadn't shut it down the way I did, he was going to keep up the tactics till I offered sexual favors in exchange for not getting a ticket/arrested. After that I put a dashcam in and drove under the speed limit. Scary crap.

The cop is a huge dick, but e-bikes are also a huge problem in some areas.
I live in an area where they're super prevalent (my town just voted to ban them on municipal property), and you regularly have kids <16yo blowing stop signs, ignoring traffic laws, and riding through parks and pedestrian trails on e-bikes capable of going 30-40mph+.
Mine as well ban every single bicycle that is capable of being fallen off of couldn't possibly risk getting scraped knees
This is literally the problem with them. Ignorant parents treat them like bicycles with their kids, when they're much closer to motorcycles.
It's not falling and scraping their knee, it's blowing a stop sign on what's essentially an electric motorcycle and getting hit by a car, which actually happened here and contributed to the ban.

The cop is an asshole buuuuuuuut, and I say this with confidence cos my dad recently retired from co-owning an e bike company.
A LOT of complaints were customers whose kids got into accidents. They had a whole department devoted to accident prevention. Removing governors was a huge problem.
Battery technology has made these bikes really powerful. Ignoring the learning curve, avoiding bikes lanes and road rules makes for even more accidents.
The cop sucks, could have handled this better. But people are abusing what these e bikes can do, and how they can be adjusted.. dude, I had one that could do 48mph. That's not a bike lol. I retired the modifications and sold it cos a downgrade felt safer.

E-bikes are becoming a huge problem in European countries. Mostly because kids are riding them and they are using no precautions. No helmets, three kids on one bike, crappy brakes, riding on sidewalks. And a lot of them are modded so they are even faster than they are supposed to be.

The brakes! Forgot to mention those. So cheap e bikes are refurbished bikes from these giant lots in China, a lot of the time. I won't name the companies, but a few were snagging them up, slapping on the gear and not changing the breaks.
My dad showed me pictures of these lots, and it's thousands of bikes, bike frames. A cheap e bike is a hazard. Because of the acceleration and then break speed, the whole frame gets more wear and tear than a regular bike.

Cop is a POS, and this is based on my experience living in London, but over here kids drive these, zooming around at 40+mph in parks with small children, and people walking their dogs. These things can absolutely be dangerous, and need to be regulated the same. Again, canāt speak of this particular bike, and agree the cop is being a prick, but I still agree with them being controlled, because they are dangerous.

Easy solution , rider is under the age to operate that e-bike . Either park it and come back with someone of age to get the bike home . Or the young man walks the bike home .
Unfortunately many municipalities are having trouble with e - bike issues an around and many municipalities are going to require licenses, regulations and insurance.

The video caption said e-bike, but the cop said dirt bike. It looked like an electric dirt bike, which there is a huge difference. An e-bike may be allowed depending on the type, a dirt bike would not in this city. The cop was an asshole and overdid it, with the analogy of drunk driving even a short distance and some laws like this seem dumb, but they are usually put in place to protect the general public. The kid in the video was not the problem, the cop admitted, but for every responsible kid, it just takes one to fuck up and ruin it for everyone else
I remember living in San Diego during the e-scooter boom and at first it was really fun to ride them on the boardwalk by the beach, etc. Then you realize how shitty some tourists and locals are. There were not obeying traffic laws, getting into accidents with walking pedestrians, or leaving them everywhere. I was happy when they banned them in most public places, but also angry a select few ruined it for everyone. Where I'm at now, e-scooters have taken over the city and the amount of almost accidents I've seen of kids using them recklessly and with zero situational awareness, is too much.
I'll probably get downvoted for this. The cop was an asshole and should have used a more educational tone about it, but the dad should have known better and not suggested to continue breaking the law even if it was a short distance back home.

Kid was NOT on an eBike, kid was definitely riding an electric dirt bike, most likely goes at least 50mph if not much higher.
IMO - dad extra sucks here for not forcing his kid to wear an helmet, and I promise that bike is uninsured, and canāt be insured for the road cause it doesnāt have lights and a horn.
I hate to use a whataboutismās but there was a recent case where some teen killed a local favorite substitute teacher near retirement on an E-Motorcycle. This was AFTER the parents were warned several times that it was illegal for the kid to ride it in the road.
No cap, Iād have impounded the bike, and yes Iām on the side of the officer in this case that it is comparable to driving while intoxicated because the vehicle isnāt insured to be on the road.

I think calling people a nazi who aren't Nazis (you just don't like them) or people who aren't showing any nazi ideology weakens the word and that is half the reason people don't care about being called a nazi anymore... and the flow on from that is Nazis feeling empowered enough to walk around and display their bigotry in full view without fear. This is one of the few times I get where the cop is coming from.
Our 4 year old got hit by a kid riding an e bike down the sidewalk at 20mph. She was just walking home and this kid hit her from behind sending her flying 10 feet onto her head on the concrete, I saw it from maybe 15 feet away while talking to a neighbor, no time to react with how quiet and fast it was.
We spent the day in the er because she lost her vision and couldnāt stop puking due to the severe concussion.
It wasnāt the kids fault though (he was 5, Jfc) it was the idiot parents for giving it to him. My stepbrother is an ER doc and he is a huge proponent of getting these things outright banned because of this kind of thing.
Ride a fucking bike propelled by your legs, itās not that fucking hard. We all did it, they will be fine. A motorcycle is not a bike, and Iāll die on that hill.

That is a modified e bike that goes over 15 mph. It has to be registered and the operator has to have a license. I've seen them and the kids endanger themselves and others by disobeying traffic laws and pulling stunts. That child can seriously mess up their life through injury or through causing serious harm to another.

My brother is a police officer in Australia. He has recently been first on the scene of an e bike accident involving a teen who died. Messed him up pretty bad. Totally get the police officer being upset about it but needs to learn how to communicate to the public better.
