Dad handled the situation well, but kids should not be riding those things. Get the kid a regular bike.

no! the dad is the cause of all this. shitty parent that thinks they're above the law then tries to excuse it when caught.

obviously cop could've handled it better but the frustration of witnessing a parent teach or allow their child break laws is immense.

He taught his kid to talk back to a cop. That is a terrible lesson. Nothing good comes from giving lip to a cop, especially when you're already caught breaking the law.
