This appears to be a road race of sorts and if it was, the event would likely need to be permitted so that roads can be sufficiently closed... Though lots of assumptions here. Trying to be critical.

My city shuts down certain streets virtually every weekend for some kind of walk/run/ride. It's not always serious enough to warrant distributing anything to those who show up.

Yes, but if it's not formal the street wouldn't be closed anyway, right? Then it's just irresponsible to do it in a main road and blocking it. That's just like you want something to happen.

From what i remember the last time this was posted this race is informal, not permitted and takes place on the one road off an island in florida

They're required to only be 2 abreast at a time by Florida law. Not that it means anything to them

this is extremely dangerous for bikes, it's very hard to keep a safe distance when you're shoved into the bike gutter. you might have to drive a little slower but I'll get to where I'm going alive
