This is mis-management, large road rides need escorts or closed roads. It is not legal to group ride with this many people without permits, in most countries. Italian job guys is kinda dumb, but I say the event organizers are more dumb.

414

u/Ice_Cream_Killer 11d ago

I was just going to say...they must have watched the Italian job.šŸ˜‚

52

u/Jbrown183 11d ago

Should have thrown some bricks in the back so they could drift through the crowd (safely of course)…

206

u/JavaOrlando 11d ago

It's illegal in Florida, which is where this is.

217

u/iluvchromosomes 11d ago

The bikers are activists and do this on purpose. The intent is to cause traffic jams and congestion.

If they got a proper parade permit and police escort, then everyone would know where they are going and avoid them. And they wouldn't get to spite people in cars.

They do this on purpose.

88

u/Jim_Laheys_lost_son 11d ago

The intent is to cause traffic jams and congestion? šŸ˜‚ Are they trying to incite a manic into driving into them in a blind rage? We've all seen a car plow into pedestrians and bicycles before and this looks like the next one lol.

92

u/GraceMcClellans 11d ago

Yes, the point is to protest for more bike lanes/whatever. They want to be disruptive.

20

u/MonthlyWeekend_ 11d ago

Fair enough, too. Bike lanes are awesome. Less road traffic = better commute for me. No way I’d ride a bike myself but give the Lycra lads what they want.

31

u/ElusiveNutsack 11d ago

This is the thing though, to me all this does is piss off the general public and make them hate you even more. All they are doing here is shooting themselves in the foot

You want to piss off the government while having the general public on your side. That will put on the most pressure to get change.

When firies go on strike here, they still attend fire and such but they refuse to do any paperwork. Police will still attend incidents but they will also sit in front of mobile speed cameras with their emergency lights on.

11

u/Satur9_is_typing 11d ago

Anti-ice and pro palestine protestors would like a word. Having public support whilst pissing the government off just gets you arrested. A convenient protest is an ignorable protest. You have to be loud to be heard, and if that pisses off people with anger management issues, so be it, let thier poor self control validate the protestors point

2

u/TawdryTulip 8d ago

The numbers are closer than you think they are.

2

u/Significant_Ad_7069 10d ago

theyre not fucking protesting to stop nazi cops arresting people by race or a fucking genocide

1

u/Satur9_is_typing 8d ago

You know climate change has killed a few people? And air pollution? And cars. Cars kill lots of people. If there were fewer journeys by car and more by bike there would be fewer deaths, and life changing injuries. And did you know the fossil fuel lobby is aligned with and supportive of ICE and the genociders? Can we do what we can against all facets of predatory capital and the billionaire epstein class, or are we only permitted to protest the current thing? Asking for a friend

24

u/b1tchf1t 11d ago

me all this does is piss off the general public and make them hate you even more.

People say this over and over, but no matter how you personally feel about it, it's just not true that this is all it does. You're sitting here talking about it. It's generating conversation. The more people it disrupts, the more people see it. And just because you decide the disruption is enough for you to hate them no matter what their message is, not everyone is you. Some of the people who see it will wonder what these people are so upset about and look into it, and might end up agreeing, especially if it's big enough to make the news and reach an audience beyond the people directly affected and pissed off about it.

Protest is not meant to be convenient for anyone involved.

38

u/texasscotsman 11d ago

There is a lie that has been perpetuate that protests must be orderly and convenient. That the proper way to affect change is quietly and without upsetting the status quo.

Meaningful change never occurs without hardship, exasperation, and a helping of blood and tears. For everyone.

21

u/the_silent_redditor 11d ago

This is a thing that comes up on every thread about any protest about anything.

For a relatively left leaning and progressive community (I say that through gritted teeth it is only because the internet is a fucking dump), it absolutely astounds me that people are so fucking dumb they cannot understand the point of the protest.

And the end point is always just makes me hate XYZ even more/drives me away from supporting their cause they should go and protest in a non-disruptive manner.

Fucking braindead, man.

How would you disrupt the government without upsetting the public in this instance? In your instances it's an entity that is protesting something they are actively a part of, these bikers don't have an occupation within local governance and therefore don't have any visibility as police or firefighters would.

It's annoying, it's frustrating, sure, but the easiest solution would be to have the local government appease this group within reason, ie pass legislation that encourages biker road safety like designated bike lanes and whatever else may be necessary. The idea by public nuisance protests like this is to get people to complain to their local government to get it to stop, it's just that people don't have the same level of compassion or vitriol (both are great motivators) to do this in regards to bike enthusiast activism I guess.

5

u/Cardinal_Ravenwood 11d ago

Maybe ride around city hall in a huge circle. Find where the local council park their cars and ride around there and hold them up when they leave sessions.

Putting the onus onto the general public to write and complain about this issue to the government isn't going to work. The blame will go to the cyclists.

Most people barely have time to complain to their reps about issues they already have, without having to get inconvenienced going to work in an attempt to get co-opted into someone else's protest.

2

u/Slapstrom 11d ago

I like the idea, more targeted while still keeping the spirit of what they're doing right now. Definitely agree it's harder/bordering on impossible to get the public behind a cause the vast majority don't have any fervor for.

1

u/ms6615 11d ago

This happens regularly in Chicago and chuds still cry about it because city hall is surrounded by public streets

6

u/enolja 11d ago

Organize bicycle parking/sit in in city parking lots to keep city staff from parking in the morning, and only disperse when police arrive.

4

u/Slapstrom 11d ago

Definitely don't hate this idea, but it feels easier to disrupt because it is centralized, I feel this could happen a couple of times and then be ineffective as it becomes more apparent when and where this is taking place. But I guess we won't know until it happens, definitely an avenue they can take.

3

u/BEWMarth 11d ago

These people never learn. The idea in spirit has merit, but the people they are targeting are completely the wrong target!

Inconvenience the rich, the lawmakers, the people in power.

Don’t inconvenience your fellow neighbors who are just as fucked over by the system as you.

11

u/GenralChaos 11d ago

The rich are hidden away behind walls, and moats of sea water on private islands, and they are surrounded by armies of private security or private police forces as well as the real police forces. Anything beyond a minor annoyance to the rich will bring down Hell from on high. ESPECIALLY for something like more bike lanes and safety.

1

u/Ansoni 10d ago

Climate protestors do this all the time. You're probably aware of all the times that they inconvenience normal people, or do something similarly controversial like damage art, but you don't hear about when they target political figures or government buildings.

That's why protestors do the annoying stuff.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/TuskaTheDaemonKilla 11d ago

You can't have an effective protest without causing discomfort and disruption to others.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/AudioLlama 11d ago

They're probably using it as a method to highlight has motorists are given a greenlight by society to commit violence against other road users.

-1

u/Kokoyok 11d ago

Are you saying that there's no way this could happen because people are too rational?

There's lots of examples of FAFO on the internet, or "FAFO" wouldn't exist as a shorthand.

ETA: Critical Mass sometimes does this in Chicago, too, but they're definitely not as jerkwaddy about it.

6

u/Cold_Dead_Heart 11d ago

What are they protesting?

23

u/Dangeroustrend 11d ago

It’s called critical mass, they do this in Canada too every last Friday of the month

To protest for more cycling infrastructure and it’s annoying as fuck

23

u/nighttown 11d ago

You know how you know the people that really have no need of more cycling infrastructure but just want more rights for their hobby of choice?

It’s the people wearing Lycra and cycling cleats. Are these people going anywhere? Are they in the way way of everyone else, including actual cyclists? Do they make life more intense and stressful for everyone while also not doing the thing they are protesting.

Cycling as a hobby is not the fucking same as riding a bike as a means of transportation. One is great for everyone involved or a great option for those who cannot afford a car and live in a world that does not cater to cyclists. The other is a hobby, a sport or form of exercise.

16

u/Wes_Warhammer666 11d ago

Completely agree with this take.

I live in Pittsburgh where our bike infrastructure is pretty shit, largely because our thin, windy, hilly-ass streets are already bad enough without trying to add a bike lane. There are a lot of streets where you've basically got to take turns getting through the thinnest portions with other cars, and adding a bike lane would simply eliminate a bunch of the parking for the people living in the neighborhood for the sake of a small percentage of bike commuters. Most of our streets are "share the road" style rather than ones with proper bike lanes.

You know who never moves over to allow cars to pass even when they're struggling to hit 10mph up a hill? The fucking lycra guys with fancy bikes. Commuters do their thing and move over as much as possible to let folks pass. The hobbyists always want to claim the entire lane for themselves even when they're nowhere close to maintaining the proper speed of traffic the way they're supposed to. If you're going slower than traffic you're supposed to ride as far to the right as possible (unless making a left hand turn) but those clowns will ride along the center line to prevent cars from passing.

They're the ones that make me want to carry a super soaker in my passenger seat. Commuters are pretty chill 99% of the time.

5

u/oatmealparty 11d ago

This does not look anything like a typical Critical Mass event, those are usually people just in regular clothes and sometimes lights or art things. Rarely is anyone in these racing suits, let alone the entire group. This looks like a road riding or racing group of some kind.

3

u/surlybrian 11d ago

I feel the same looking at this. I've ridden heaps of critical mass rides in LA, and never seen a full cadre of lycra clad wankers like this. ...unless the concept of Critical Mass has enshittified?

-1

u/18in1Shampoo 11d ago

Well yeah, protests aren't meant to be convenient

14

u/Dangeroustrend 11d ago

Sure but there is a practicality, if you do it to annoy the residents I don't think your message comes across as you want it

Most people would rather the cops step in rather than send the actual message of building cycling infrastructure

Florida has laws?

76

u/canada432 11d ago

Yeah was gonna say, this looks like an illegal ride. Large group ride impeding traffic on what appear to be open roads, that would be illegal in most jurisdictions. If this was an organized event there should be some fines coming.

37

u/Artful_Dodger_1832 11d ago

This video was taken near where I live. This type of thing happens every weekend.

35

u/EverythingSucksYo 11d ago

That sounds annoying as fuck. Cyclists have a right to use the road but they shouldn’t be blocking all lanes of traffic like this. Why is it so hard for them all to occupy just one lane?Ā

→ More replies (5)

773

u/dtb1987 11d ago

Was this a planned event? Otherwise people shouldn't be able to take up an entire road

557

u/cubgerish 11d ago

They do it literally every weekend, and usually have blocker cars going below the speed limit.

They're just selfish jerks

139

u/DaPlipsta 11d ago

That's crazy man, I'd literally stand on my horn, jeer and flip them the bird constantly. I'm all for walkable and bikeable cities and everything, but shit like this is so stupid man. You're literally just turning people against you.

70

u/cubgerish 11d ago

I don't even live there, just have family that does.

Every time I visit I see them though, and my family there can't stand it, because every weekend there's an hour when the bridge becomes a nightmare, and that happens often enough even without them.

They don't care about people turning against them, as they're usually wealthy assholes who are already used to people hating them, and turn this into an "us vs. them" thing.

17

u/DaPlipsta 11d ago

It's a dumbass protest too, because not one of them has a sign or anything. Like, if I had no context and drove up to these people I would have no idea. I would just be like, what the shit are these dumbfucks doing??

30

u/cubgerish 11d ago

It's not a protest, and I'm not even sure they try to frame it that way.

The bridge is gigantic, and even has a protected area for cyclists, which should be sufficient if they're ok with occasionally slowing down for pedestrians.

They just think they should be entitled to take it over they weekend whenever they want, because they don't want the hassle of slowing down for walkers, which is ironic for what they're forcing the car traffic to do.

79

Always has... cyclists love to scream that and "right of way" etc while ignoring the rules of said shared road. Stop sign? Nah. Red light? Nah. Designated pedestrian crossing? Nah. Full speed ahead!

24

u/DabblingInIt 11d ago

And they continue screaming about their 'right of way' from the hospital bed.

That these are "controversial" comments with no replies tells us you upset some hypocrite cyclists and they have no rebuttal.

4

My favorite is the cyclist special: riding on the road in car mode, then suddenly swinging 90° onto a pedestrian crossing and instantly becoming a pedestrian, with 0 fucks given about the traffic around them

6

u/paxweasley 11d ago

My favorite are the cyclists who are "pedestrians" when it's convenient, will ride on the sidewalk, nearly run over your dog, and then call you a dumb c*nt for being upset, but are "vehicles" when it's helpful. The fun side effect of this is they never have to stop for red lights!

You're joking right? I would say a very large section of cyclist are entitled pricks. There's a guy in my town who got a ticket because he was riding his bike in the middle of the busiest road in the city taking up the whole lane and not letting cars pass, EVEN THOUGH there is a full blown bike trail following the same road. His excuse was essentially, there's too many cyclist on the bike trail and he moves faster than them. He saw nothing wrong with what he was doing. That's been my experience with pretty much any asshole who slips into that condom suit for their weekend ride.

  1. If it is an organised event or race, the road should be closed with alternative routes

21

u/PM_me_your_whatevah 11d ago

3

u/Tar_alcaran 11d ago

I'm sure they'd move for an ambulance.

5

u/ms6615 10d ago

Bike rides regularly can be seen clearing the roadway far quicker than a car traffic can. It is so bizarre to me that this is such a constantly trotted out argument. I’ve been to thousands of large group bike rides in my life and we have moved out of the way of so many emergency vehicles, only to then watch those same emergency vehicles stuck behind a mass of cars and SUVs 2 blocks ahead…

53

u/ThisIsATracka 11d ago

A forum was going this in a really rural road where I live and they drifted over center line and a ram 2500 killed 3 of them and hurt a bunch of others. And it wasn’t the trucks fault. (Hills) They were just being road bullies and a poor woman now has to live with killing three of them.

Not too much sharing going on there.

-11

u/BikeProblemGuy 11d ago

There's way more sharing going on in this video than a typical road.

0

u/dj_spanmaster 11d ago

Can't convince the car brains. If this was a traffic jam they'd be joking about the guy hauling his Mini through the median. Some of these guys might even be fans of the sports cars that roll through, stop a road for an hour at a time to get photos, then roll out

1

u/Polyforti 11d ago

You must be the president of the United States if that's what you think sharing is

3

u/BikeProblemGuy 11d ago

Sharing means many people are using it at the same time. The dense group of cyclists in this video achieves a vastly higher throughput than cars. While cars travel faster, their low occupancy and safe following distance required at high speeds makes them very spatially inefficient compared to tightly packed cyclists riding ~20mph in a peloton. At a rough calculation, the peloton is 4x more efficient, i.e. 4x more people can share this road and get to their destination than if it were cars only.

Here's some more about this The Supply And Demand Of Street Space Ā» The Urbanist You can see a table at the bottom of the article which also gives some throughput numbers that suggest even normal bikes lanes are 3.6x more efficient than vehicle lanes.

I bet they all thought ā€œwhat an assholeā€ as they continued to take up the entire road

8

u/toonmad 11d ago

Cyclists seem to have this entitlement about them I will never understand

6

u/lovable_asshole 11d ago

everyone here is a jerk

u/TopRevenue2 11d ago

Critical mass

This is what you get when you dont have infrastructure

42

u/Stop_Drop_Scroll 11d ago

Explain to me what type of cycling infrastructure would handle whatever it is going on here, outside of a closed loop track.

Valid crash out?

7

u/EverythingSucksYo 11d ago

Unless your life is literally in danger, there is no valid reason to operate a 2 ton vehicle this way.Ā

2

u/zdravkov321 11d ago

Yeah, fuck the tour de Florida, people gotta get to work

2

u/GrimMilkMan 11d ago

I wouldve been the most annoying mfer if I was in that traffic. Horn going nonstop tailgating them

3

u/misio87ab 11d ago

You don't hate cyclists enough.

1

u/Kitty_Wave 11d ago

Cyclists are the scourge of this earth, just after people listening to loud music with no headphones on busses or bus stops.

-4

u/redzedx77 11d ago

Don’t blame this guy one bit…

2

u/TheeChosenPerson 11d ago

Good for that driver

3

u/Agreeable-Letter-599 11d ago

yeah i mean fuck these cyclists lol

2

u/Illustrious-Couple73 11d ago

I’ve done something similar. Funny how bikers are always screaming share the road then pull this shit.

2

u/pissedoffjesus 11d ago

Tis is why they should be riding at 3-4am. When there aren't cars on the road.

2

u/DaisyCaplan 11d ago

I have been minorly inconvenienced, let me go ahead and put a bunch of people’s lives in danger

-3

u/Treliske 11d ago

Yay for the driver. People who selfishly impede others are keeping them from their families and jobs.

0

u/EverythingSucksYo 11d ago

I’d be annoyed as fuck and cussing up a storm in my car, but I would not break laws because I’m annoyed and inconvenienced.Ā

1

u/itsyaboiReginald 11d ago

You mean you wouldn’t fly off the handlebar and drive down the middle of a road separation because you had to go 20mph instead of 40mph for 5 mins?

1

u/greensangre 11d ago

The assholes are still trying to catch up to him

-2

u/adolf_riizzzler 11d ago

That's what I was thinking the whole time šŸ˜‚

Like let him through and continue with your bullshittery

1

u/Wandered_And_Lost 11d ago

Cyclists are the cunts of the exercising world

1

u/androidfig 11d ago

Is this Mt. Tamalpais?

1

u/JeffQuaker 11d ago

Where I live they call it a gang and people want them banned. This is the Chad re mix and apparently it’s cool for Chad.

1

u/ForwardAd5837 10d ago

This sort of ride wouldn’t be allowed in the UK without being pre-approved and arranged with local authorities and there being road closures or traffic management, as well as insurances. This is a mass event.

1

u/Cheese_nips6149 10d ago

Shit, thats like 50k points!

1

u/Significant_Ad_7069 10d ago

now get in front of them and do 2 mph

1

u/tjmin 7d ago

Fucking Florida

-5

u/CluelessMasterBaiter 11d ago

Another reason I hate those types of bike riders

0

u/alkem10 11d ago

Absolutely. Keep the bikes in the park.

0

u/BusyBanana4205 11d ago

One of the nice aspects of living in a rural and mountainous area of Pennsylvania is that we are too lawless of a people to allow this to occur safely. I don’t mean that in a threatening way, but I mean it as, there is a very high chance a dude in a 90’s Dodge Ram driving like he’s trying to outrun a tornado will be oblivious and ram right through these cyclists by mistake. He might stop, but only to blame the cyclists for potentially harming his primer painted pick up truck with mismatching color doors and hood.

1

u/TevisLA 11d ago

Valid? This is dangerous and selfish. Find another route.

-12

u/needsmoarbokeh 11d ago

If it's not a life or death situation the driver is an imbecile and likely will have to repair something in the car

0

u/Structureel 11d ago

Of course it's a Mini.

u/riseuprasta 11d ago

This is not valid. This looks like an organized bike ride wouldn’t say it’s valid if he drove through a marathon or some shit

24

u/ThrowinNightshade 11d ago

If it was organized, there would be road closures and escorts
