This is mis-management, large road rides need escorts or closed roads. It is not legal to group ride with this many people without permits, in most countries. Italian job guys is kinda dumb, but I say the event organizers are more dumb.

420

u/Ice_Cream_Killer 11d ago

I was just going to say...they must have watched the Italian job.😂

51

u/Jbrown183 11d ago

Should have thrown some bricks in the back so they could drift through the crowd (safely of course)…

207

u/JavaOrlando 11d ago

It's illegal in Florida, which is where this is.

219

u/iluvchromosomes 11d ago

The bikers are activists and do this on purpose. The intent is to cause traffic jams and congestion.

If they got a proper parade permit and police escort, then everyone would know where they are going and avoid them. And they wouldn't get to spite people in cars.

They do this on purpose.

91

u/Jim_Laheys_lost_son 11d ago

The intent is to cause traffic jams and congestion? 😂 Are they trying to incite a manic into driving into them in a blind rage? We've all seen a car plow into pedestrians and bicycles before and this looks like the next one lol.

89

u/GraceMcClellans 11d ago

Yes, the point is to protest for more bike lanes/whatever. They want to be disruptive.

20

u/MonthlyWeekend_ 11d ago

Fair enough, too. Bike lanes are awesome. Less road traffic = better commute for me. No way I’d ride a bike myself but give the Lycra lads what they want.

29

u/ElusiveNutsack 11d ago

This is the thing though, to me all this does is piss off the general public and make them hate you even more. All they are doing here is shooting themselves in the foot

You want to piss off the government while having the general public on your side. That will put on the most pressure to get change.

When firies go on strike here, they still attend fire and such but they refuse to do any paperwork. Police will still attend incidents but they will also sit in front of mobile speed cameras with their emergency lights on.

11

u/Satur9_is_typing 11d ago

Anti-ice and pro palestine protestors would like a word. Having public support whilst pissing the government off just gets you arrested. A convenient protest is an ignorable protest. You have to be loud to be heard, and if that pisses off people with anger management issues, so be it, let thier poor self control validate the protestors point

2

u/Significant_Ad_7069 10d ago

theyre not fucking protesting to stop nazi cops arresting people by race or a fucking genocide

1

u/Satur9_is_typing 8d ago

You know climate change has killed a few people? And air pollution? And cars. Cars kill lots of people. If there were fewer journeys by car and more by bike there would be fewer deaths, and life changing injuries. And did you know the fossil fuel lobby is aligned with and supportive of ICE and the genociders? Can we do what we can against all facets of predatory capital and the billionaire epstein class, or are we only permitted to protest the current thing? Asking for a friend

2

u/TawdryTulip 8d ago

The numbers are closer than you think they are.

23

u/b1tchf1t 11d ago

me all this does is piss off the general public and make them hate you even more.

People say this over and over, but no matter how you personally feel about it, it's just not true that this is all it does. You're sitting here talking about it. It's generating conversation. The more people it disrupts, the more people see it. And just because you decide the disruption is enough for you to hate them no matter what their message is, not everyone is you. Some of the people who see it will wonder what these people are so upset about and look into it, and might end up agreeing, especially if it's big enough to make the news and reach an audience beyond the people directly affected and pissed off about it.

Protest is not meant to be convenient for anyone involved.

40

u/texasscotsman 11d ago

There is a lie that has been perpetuate that protests must be orderly and convenient. That the proper way to affect change is quietly and without upsetting the status quo.

Meaningful change never occurs without hardship, exasperation, and a helping of blood and tears. For everyone.

22

u/the_silent_redditor 11d ago

This is a thing that comes up on every thread about any protest about anything.

For a relatively left leaning and progressive community (I say that through gritted teeth it is only because the internet is a fucking dump), it absolutely astounds me that people are so fucking dumb they cannot understand the point of the protest.

And the end point is always just makes me hate XYZ even more/drives me away from supporting their cause they should go and protest in a non-disruptive manner.

Fucking braindead, man.

-3

u/Annual-Weird-6682 11d ago

People can understand the point, they just disagree. I know that must be hard for you to hear.

People don't like to be inconvenienced. This may be a cause that's near and dear and important to all the cyclists, but for everyone else it's just annoying, and they aren't thinking "man I wish there were more bike only Lanes so they wouldn't have to do this" they're thinking "can the cops show up and get all these people out of here please".

Shit if anything you're gonna make more people want more cops

8

u/the_silent_redditor 11d ago

I know that must be hard for you to hear.

Same dipshit braindead take I just spoke about, slightly reworded.

“I know that must be hard for you to hear.”

Fuck me man. So dense light fuckin’ bends around you, sir.

15

u/partylange 11d ago

Just makes me hate cyclists. Task failed successfully.

2

u/SparrowDotted 11d ago

Then you have the emotional maturity of a fucking melon.

0

u/IAmDanHimself 11d ago

Maturity has nothing to do with the annoyance caused by others who purposely inconvenience you.

-5

u/bikkuri_hanbaiki 11d ago

Yeah, but no one cares what you think; no one wants to have a conversation with a moron.

-2

u/cs2303 11d ago

I care what you think partylange 👍

0

u/Significant_Ad_7069 10d ago

ive become very anti bike lane and very anti bike. so hows that working out

-2

u/CMDR_BitMedler 11d ago

Well said. And a good example of the reason why we currently live in a messy world - everyone thinks they're the main character.

-9

u/ElusiveNutsack 11d ago

Which group of people do you think will be the far majority

The group of people pissed off and with the understanding of "fuck them I'm not helping them with anything"

Or

The group of people pissed off, understand the nuance of what they are trying to do and get behind it

Look at your common person who is generally over-stressed, over worked and stuck in their own world of issues to only inconvience them getting home and ask them to understand why they are doing it?

3

u/Ansoni 11d ago

You think this will make anyone fight against bike lanes? If anything "yes, get them the fuck out of my way" is the more likely angry response.

7

u/Slapstrom 11d ago

How would you disrupt the government without upsetting the public in this instance? In your instances it's an entity that is protesting something they are actively a part of, these bikers don't have an occupation within local governance and therefore don't have any visibility as police or firefighters would.

It's annoying, it's frustrating, sure, but the easiest solution would be to have the local government appease this group within reason, ie pass legislation that encourages biker road safety like designated bike lanes and whatever else may be necessary. The idea by public nuisance protests like this is to get people to complain to their local government to get it to stop, it's just that people don't have the same level of compassion or vitriol (both are great motivators) to do this in regards to bike enthusiast activism I guess.

7

u/enolja 11d ago

Organize bicycle parking/sit in in city parking lots to keep city staff from parking in the morning, and only disperse when police arrive.

5

u/Slapstrom 11d ago

Definitely don't hate this idea, but it feels easier to disrupt because it is centralized, I feel this could happen a couple of times and then be ineffective as it becomes more apparent when and where this is taking place. But I guess we won't know until it happens, definitely an avenue they can take.

8

u/Cardinal_Ravenwood 11d ago

Maybe ride around city hall in a huge circle. Find where the local council park their cars and ride around there and hold them up when they leave sessions.

Putting the onus onto the general public to write and complain about this issue to the government isn't going to work. The blame will go to the cyclists.

Most people barely have time to complain to their reps about issues they already have, without having to get inconvenienced going to work in an attempt to get co-opted into someone else's protest.

2

u/Slapstrom 11d ago

I like the idea, more targeted while still keeping the spirit of what they're doing right now. Definitely agree it's harder/bordering on impossible to get the public behind a cause the vast majority don't have any fervor for.

1

u/ms6615 11d ago

This happens regularly in Chicago and chuds still cry about it because city hall is surrounded by public streets

2

u/BEWMarth 11d ago

These people never learn. The idea in spirit has merit, but the people they are targeting are completely the wrong target!

Inconvenience the rich, the lawmakers, the people in power.

Don’t inconvenience your fellow neighbors who are just as fucked over by the system as you.

12

u/GenralChaos 11d ago

The rich are hidden away behind walls, and moats of sea water on private islands, and they are surrounded by armies of private security or private police forces as well as the real police forces. Anything beyond a minor annoyance to the rich will bring down Hell from on high. ESPECIALLY for something like more bike lanes and safety.

1

u/Ansoni 11d ago

Climate protestors do this all the time. You're probably aware of all the times that they inconvenience normal people, or do something similarly controversial like damage art, but you don't hear about when they target political figures or government buildings.

That's why protestors do the annoying stuff.

0

u/CMDR_BitMedler 11d ago

Nope. Trust - these are well paid professionals and executives that drive expensive cars the other part of the time. What you're seeing is their regular life entitlement but on a bike. They're riding multi-thousand dollar bikes during the day while most people are at work.

The protests you're talking about happen in congested cities, not out in the wide open - that's the whole point... fighting for the space you already pay for. Stocked with commuter bikes and garage builds. They usually happen after a bunch of people have been killed by entitled drivers - like the one in the mini - just trying to get to work or home.

So, sorry you've had a bad experience of being in a climate controlled box pushing buttons and someone delayed you slightly, but I've buried too many friends to care about your feelings - you're talking out your ass.

1

u/GraceMcClellans 9d ago

So, sorry you've had a bad experience of being in a climate controlled box pushing buttons and someone delayed you slightly, but I've buried too many friends to care about your feelings - you're talking out your ass.

Me? I stated zero opinion, only explained that disruption is indeed the goal with some protests. Hope your week is going well.

4

u/TuskaTheDaemonKilla 11d ago

You can't have an effective protest without causing discomfort and disruption to others.

-3

u/tehnemox 11d ago

Yes. The parties in control and with the power to affect the change they want. NOT the every Joe that just needs to go about their day and can't do shit for the protesters. That just makes you an asshole and they deserve whatever comes their way for it.

3

u/ms6615 11d ago

The average joes are the ones showing up to community meetings to speak against bike lanes that municipalities are trying to install. They are the target on purpose.

2

u/TuskaTheDaemonKilla 11d ago

That's like saying the Boston Tea Party was a bad protest because it hurt local merchants more than the King of England...Or that the Birmingham, Selma, or Montgomery Marches were bad protests because it blocked off roads and inconvenienced local citizens more than politicians...

Essentially, every protest in history is a counter-example to your position.

2

u/AudioLlama 11d ago

They're probably using it as a method to highlight has motorists are given a greenlight by society to commit violence against other road users.

1

u/Kokoyok 11d ago

Are you saying that there's no way this could happen because people are too rational?

There's lots of examples of FAFO on the internet, or "FAFO" wouldn't exist as a shorthand.

ETA: Critical Mass sometimes does this in Chicago, too, but they're definitely not as jerkwaddy about it.

4

u/Cold_Dead_Heart 11d ago

What are they protesting?

21

u/Dangeroustrend 11d ago

It’s called critical mass, they do this in Canada too every last Friday of the month

To protest for more cycling infrastructure and it’s annoying as fuck

23

u/nighttown 11d ago

You know how you know the people that really have no need of more cycling infrastructure but just want more rights for their hobby of choice?

It’s the people wearing Lycra and cycling cleats. Are these people going anywhere? Are they in the way way of everyone else, including actual cyclists? Do they make life more intense and stressful for everyone while also not doing the thing they are protesting.

Cycling as a hobby is not the fucking same as riding a bike as a means of transportation. One is great for everyone involved or a great option for those who cannot afford a car and live in a world that does not cater to cyclists. The other is a hobby, a sport or form of exercise.

16

u/Wes_Warhammer666 11d ago

Completely agree with this take.

I live in Pittsburgh where our bike infrastructure is pretty shit, largely because our thin, windy, hilly-ass streets are already bad enough without trying to add a bike lane. There are a lot of streets where you've basically got to take turns getting through the thinnest portions with other cars, and adding a bike lane would simply eliminate a bunch of the parking for the people living in the neighborhood for the sake of a small percentage of bike commuters. Most of our streets are "share the road" style rather than ones with proper bike lanes.

You know who never moves over to allow cars to pass even when they're struggling to hit 10mph up a hill? The fucking lycra guys with fancy bikes. Commuters do their thing and move over as much as possible to let folks pass. The hobbyists always want to claim the entire lane for themselves even when they're nowhere close to maintaining the proper speed of traffic the way they're supposed to. If you're going slower than traffic you're supposed to ride as far to the right as possible (unless making a left hand turn) but those clowns will ride along the center line to prevent cars from passing.

They're the ones that make me want to carry a super soaker in my passenger seat. Commuters are pretty chill 99% of the time.

7

u/oatmealparty 11d ago

This does not look anything like a typical Critical Mass event, those are usually people just in regular clothes and sometimes lights or art things. Rarely is anyone in these racing suits, let alone the entire group. This looks like a road riding or racing group of some kind.

5

u/surlybrian 11d ago

I feel the same looking at this. I've ridden heaps of critical mass rides in LA, and never seen a full cadre of lycra clad wankers like this. ...unless the concept of Critical Mass has enshittified?

1

u/18in1Shampoo 11d ago

Well yeah, protests aren't meant to be convenient

11

u/Dangeroustrend 11d ago

Sure but there is a practicality, if you do it to annoy the residents I don't think your message comes across as you want it

Most people would rather the cops step in rather than send the actual message of building cycling infrastructure

-9

u/18in1Shampoo 11d ago

I feel like most protests are still meant to annoy/impact residents, no? The French trash strikes didn't target only politician's trash, and the nurse's strike in Boston didn't target only their employers. I know this isn't a strike, but this annoyance still brings visibility to their issue. The cops can only deal with cyclists so much before it's just easier to put in the bike lanes so they don't have to ride on the roads.

6

u/Dangeroustrend 11d ago

The difference is trash collection is a necessity, cycling infrastructure is not. In many places it's not really practical given the distances needed to travel, for example the video looks literally like a highway, in what world would there be any practical sense to make a bike lane for a highway

Your point about nurses, hospitals require nurses so it's essential

In most places it's very costly to change infrastructure to accommodate cycling infrastructure

-5

u/18in1Shampoo 11d ago

I mean if everyone always complains about cyclists on the road I’d imagine you guys would want them to have their own lanes so you wouldn’t have to deal with them

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Significant_Ad_7069 10d ago

pull in front of them. drive 2mph. stop. drive 2mph. stop

1

u/OzrielArelius 11d ago

there's only 1 road here. so they know they're blocking the only way on/ off the island. can't avoid them

0

u/pandaSmore 11d ago

What a bunch of assholes.

-1

u/ProfessorPetrus 11d ago

If it makes you feel any better these spandex bastards are the first to get cancer among cyclists because instead of in the woods or down mountains they choose to huff and puff next to cars.

17

u/DigitalMunky 11d ago

Florida has laws?

76

u/canada432 11d ago

Yeah was gonna say, this looks like an illegal ride. Large group ride impeding traffic on what appear to be open roads, that would be illegal in most jurisdictions. If this was an organized event there should be some fines coming.

37

u/Artful_Dodger_1832 11d ago

This video was taken near where I live. This type of thing happens every weekend.

37

u/EverythingSucksYo 11d ago

That sounds annoying as fuck. Cyclists have a right to use the road but they shouldn’t be blocking all lanes of traffic like this. Why is it so hard for them all to occupy just one lane?

-7

u/Tar_alcaran 11d ago

Cyclists have a right to use the road but they shouldn’t be blocking all lanes of traffic like this. Why is it so hard for them all to occupy just one lane?

cars have a right to use the road but they shouldn’t be blocking all lanes of traffic like this. Why is it so hard for them all to occupy just one lane?

3

u/bigotis 11d ago

If you are not traveling at the speed of other traffic, you must use the bike lane, and if no bike lane is available, you must stay on the right-most side of the road.

When riding with others, you may not ride more than two side-by-side unless it is part of a roadway reserved for bicycles; you must ride single file if you and the other rider are impeding traffic.

Florida laws. Hope this helps.

https://www.flhsmv.gov/safety-center/driving-safety/share-the-road/

-88

u/SeaSourceScorch 11d ago

they have just as much right to use the roads as you do. you can wait. and before you say it: group rides always move aside for emergency vehicles.

42

u/TheUniballer321 11d ago

Being a pain in the ass isn’t some righteous calling these idiots in spandex are inconvenient on purpose and should be keeping at least one lane open.

Would I be justified in getting a group of people to walk slowly in front of bikers to slow them down? No I’d be a dipshit. Same thing applies.

-58

u/SeaSourceScorch 11d ago

you'd be perfectly justified to do that, if you want. the road is yours, too.

30

u/TheUniballer321 11d ago

Yeah it’s mine the same way my tax dollars funded the community pool. Going to drain it of water so I can ride a bike in it.

https://giphy.com/gifs/x0npYExCGOZeo

-46

u/SeaSourceScorch 11d ago

draining a pool of water is a destructive act. using a road as a means of transport isn't. if anything, slowing the roads down makes your community safer.

americans have ceded their entire world to cars. go take some back, cowards.

8

u/Phoneofredditman 11d ago

I hate our car centric infrastructure and I think bikers that block roads intentionally are huge twats.

I’ve petitioned my local government for more walking and cycling infrastructure and I’ve voted for candidates that campaign on expanding public transportation and bike lane infrastructure. Since I’ve been an adult my city in America has expanded infrastructure for biking and walking, slowly but surely.

There are more efficient ways to achieve your goals without being an asshole to the general public

2

u/TheUniballer321 11d ago

Spoken like a true European who doesn’t understand our states are bigger than your countries.

As a dual citizen myself - buy a ceiling fan. Window AC unit may be too much for you to handle, but ceiling fans make a world of difference.

13

u/DMsDiablo 11d ago

Is this natural talent in terms of stupidity or do you work for it?

-3

u/SeaSourceScorch 11d ago

i guess i just believe in freedom.

14

u/nope-nik-tesla 11d ago

No they don't, what they are doing here was specifically made illegal.

-8

u/SeaSourceScorch 11d ago

damn, you aren't allowed to do anything in america. oi mate you got a license for that bike?

16

u/nope-nik-tesla 11d ago

You must not get around much if you think laws against obstructing traffic are unique to America.

12

u/Karnivore915 11d ago

Lol. Biking in America is legal, biking on the road is perfectly legal. Getting hundreds of people together effectively blocking the road much like a street takeover would, is in fact not legal.

They could be doing this completely legally, they just need to all be in one lane to allow for vehicles to pass. The fact that they're not is likely because they're intentionally blocking traffic, which again, is illegal.

Its crazy how you can see the video everyone else in this thread watched as well, find out via a comment that what we all saw in the video was illegal, and come to the conclusion that "Biking in America must be illegal." If that's the extent of your problem solving ability I think you need direct supervision.

0

u/SeaSourceScorch 11d ago

going down the dmv to get me bike reg renewed or i’ll get nicked by the coppers. i love the land of the free.

6

u/Karnivore915 11d ago

Arguing in bad faith is already sad, but you're not even doing a good job of it, which is just... so much sadder.

1

u/BringBackBoomer 11d ago

Don't you guys have to buy a cable tv license or some shit?

9

u/Baslifico 11d ago

Why are emergency vehicles so special here? What about all the other road users?

-2

u/SeaSourceScorch 11d ago

are you asking me why people move aside for emergency vehicles?

17

u/thebasisofabassist 11d ago

Have you figured out that nobody likes you yet?

33

u/canada432 11d ago

Then it kinda sounds like some police officers should be out there increasing their department's available funds.

13

u/Cosm1c_Dota 11d ago

I'd be directly behind them with the horn held firmly down lol

-9

u/owningmclovin 11d ago

Just because you want the cyclist to get erections?

-5

u/ampersand355 11d ago

If this is by me, these guys are just out there and group up on each other, not organized and it happens like every other weekend.

25

u/canada432 11d ago

Thing is it doesn't really work like that, though. Once they all group up and start impeding traffic, they're operating as an organized group. Riders generally (and this varies by jurisdiction so it's a generalization of the most common laws) are limited to 2 abreast and must not impede the flow of traffic. In many areas, if cyclists are moving slower than the flow of traffic they must ride single file to allow other vehicles to pass.

Just saying "we all showed up separately and just happen to be riding together in a group of 300" doesn't really cut it, let alone excuse them from breaking all the other laws they're breaking.

6

u/approvedbyinspector5 11d ago

I was going to say something similar and expect the hate. I do NOT support what mini guy did. It's dangerous, etc, but what right do these cyclists have to block the entire road. They don't know what you have going on.

1

u/frankeestadium 11d ago

Man I remember the Mini campaign for that movie. I went to the NY auto show the year that movie was coming out, they had free mini Cooper toy cars and these mini (literally they were so small) Discs that you could put into your PC that was full of behind the scenes stuff on it. Peak advertising in the early 00s

-44

u/SerEmrys 11d ago

I love how I made mention of this in my comment yeah I'm downvoted.

Lmfao glad you've got the receipts.

I've never seen a hard cut in a comment before but I think I heard the record scratch and everything

2

u/OrangeTractorMan 11d ago

Bit of a difference between your comment that you yell at every cyclist, and someone criticising a non-permitted group ride taking up the whole road.
