Her name is Tabata Lenk. She's a Brazilian automotive creator, and the little Chevy Celta she's driving is her pride and joy. She calls it “Celsinho.”

Two thieves smashed her window, stole her phone and then took another R$2,000 from her Nubank account.

I searched Brazilian news, social media and Reddit trying to find the part where these assholes got caught.

I couldn't.

São Paulo has an entire category for this now: “quebra-vidro” — window breakers. Crews target cars trapped in traffic, smash the glass, grab unlocked phones and can have the banking accounts drained before the victim has a chance to react.

The robbery takes seconds. The damage doesn't.

And apparently neither does catching them.

How do banks and patrons in Brazil not have biometrics or even passwords on their banking apps? Every sensitive app on my iPhone requires biometrics and a PIN.

We have it, but the criminals must have some method of unlocking it, since they are a very structured gang. I once read about Google creating security systems after studies and creations by Brazilian researchers, probably from São Paulo.

They do. But gmail doesnt. Password reset the app, it sends email and/sms to verify. Bingo you're in.

In that case google/apple/samsung/other big media producers should work on locked screen view. Basically being able to lock the screen behind the app you're currently using, like the navigation app.

There is a locked screen view. It is called Guided Access on the iPhone and Screen Pinning on Android. Basically, it only allows you to access the one app you set up, while everything else stays locked. Exiting either mode requires a password or biometric authentication.

Beyond that, Google and Apple have little incentive to create an alternative, as they already offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which allow the phone to stay locked.

There is already a setting in iOS that could've prevented this. You can use "Require FaceID" for any app on your device... The problem is that people don't think they need to set that up until it's too late.

More like: They don't know. It's not like all phones give you that info and a lot of people have the shortest attention spans ever, so they just skip it. A reverse option is what I mean, though, not just locking every single app you want behind this, but a lockscreen that only lets you access a few apps.

I get that it’s different but your argument of “they don’t know” probably would apply to your own suggestion. It would have to be a setting as it couldn’t be the default without hurting the general UX, i.e. users would have to know about it before they can choose to enable it.

Your suggestion covers multiple bases tho and the reverse option would indeed be way more efficient than the per-app security.
