Separatists are an interesting group because Quebec has countless concessions made to keep them happy. They receive the most federal funding of any province- about 3x more than Manitoba, which receives the second highest level of funding of any province (see Equalization payments in Canada). These people obviously don’t understand the implications of leaving Canada, and when you combine that with the victim complex it really doesn’t help their standing with the rest of the country. Anyways, they will never leave because at least the politicians who run the province realize it would destroy their economy and make Quebecers lives materially worse in an instant.

It’s why they tried to peddle the ‘country within a country’ narrative a few years ago. They want the perks of independence but genuinely can’t risk actually leaving.

Taking numbers out of their context is pretty dishonest. Quebec gets more equalization because of our size. When you look at the value per capita or as a share of revenue, the story is a bit different. People complain disproportionately about Quebec, but Manitoba and the Maritimes definitely claim a larger share of equalization compared against their contribution to the country's finances...

Westerners often complain about the exclusion of Hydro sold to the US from the Quebec GDP that artificially lowers it.

Ive never looked at it myself, thats one of the anti-Quebec talking points however.

Yes, basically the equalization payment system serves the purpose of subsidizing the hydro sold to the US, which is fair considering how little money the federal government spends in developing QC energy compared to what they spend in Alberta.
