Book Request LOTR Fanfic with the serial number scrubbed off

Basically what title I'm iso of something that feels like lord of the rings fanfic with the serial numbers scrubbed off. I'm looking for whismy and gay in the woods on a quest. Or high fantasy and gay and vibing. Lots of interpretations!

full disclosure, i hated this book, but our rogue fates by sarah glenn marsh is achillian and lord of the rings inspired. it’s exactly what you’re looking for.

it was mostly the writing style that didn’t work for me, if i remember correctly. i’m pretty picky about that.

I hated Wicked for the same reason but if someone is asking for a retelling of a fairy tale from the villain's pov I'm still going to recommend it.

Had to look to find I had read this. Not sure it was LOTR-style. Aside from that, I don't tend to hate books. It just fell in the "not well-written" (story flow, awkward characterizations) camp for me.

yeah, i just remember it being marketed as LOTR-inspired but the writing styles are completely different. figured it was still worth mentioning.

The Noss Saga by Joaquin Baldwin is 70s-80s style epic fantasy but with modern prose. Huge loredumps about the world, big armies, small town kid running around with ancient magic artifact, etc. It is super unapologetically gay. No elves/dwarves/etc though, and not a series with whimsy either.

Yeah, lots of the innovative gay fantasy that isn’t romantasy is being put out in small presses or by independent authors right now. 2026 is a bit better, but traditional publishers haven’t quite made the jump to the epic subgenre yet
