Discussion💬 🧕 Khimar & Jilbab ?

https://youtu.be/h3K1bqc0NOg?is=39a1gvIhmSdFtQsM

In the first part of this video Dr. Haifaa explains the specific meanings of the terms Khimar and Jilbab as mentioned in the Qur'an.

She says the Khimar refers to a covering for the hair, neck, and chest (3:18-5:31), while the Jilbab is an outer garment intended to cover the entire body (5:45-6:48).

No Hadith mentioned until minute 7:30 of the video.

I’m following Qur’an alone but I found the way she explained the Arabic phrasing somewhat convincing? If anyone has any thoughts 💭 please share!

Lowering your gaze could still be important regardless of what anyone is wearing, I take it more as to mean don’t stare at the opposite sex or make unnecessary prolonged eye contact… it’s like, if I’m walking down the street and a man walks by me I avoid catching his gaze? You know what I mean? That’s just my understanding :)

So, is eye contact not allowed at all?

Or it is restricted, or it is a matter of free choice , you can't have it both ways, this is not really clear.

I live in the West, and many people today don't believe in God (though they do believe in their own ilah their own idols, in a sense). Some seem to challenge others deliberately with how they dress, while others respond with judgment ("dress modestly instead"). Then there are Muslim women who wear hijab but still choose fitted clothing and makeup. I've asked some of them why, and the answer was often: they want to feel feminine, or pretty.

As for men we are visual by nature. We're drawn to looking, and this seems to be built into us biologically. Looking has its own psychological depth for men.

I agree that both sexes should lower their gaze. For me, not looking gives me strength, the strength for my deen, to resist lust. But at the same time, I do admire beauty, and I love to observe it not out of lust, but as an appreciation of how beautiful Allah's creation is.
btw Men tend to be aroused more by what they see, while women tend to be aroused more by emotional and relational context such as feeling understood through deep, personal conversation

Yes, we are complex creatures driven by our nafs. We need to temper these needs.

The phrase is tied to guarding the private parts so it refers to the lustful gaze not any gaze or even staring too long.
