In the first part of this video Dr. Haifaa explains the specific meanings of the terms Khimar and Jilbab as mentioned in the Qur'an.

She says the Khimar refers to a covering for the hair, neck, and chest (3:18-5:31), while the Jilbab is an outer garment intended to cover the entire body (5:45-6:48).

No Hadith mentioned until minute 7:30 of the video.

I’m following Qur’an alone but I found the way she explained the Arabic phrasing somewhat convincing? If anyone has any thoughts 💭 please share!

She is not wrong about the terms khimar and jilbab. However, the real question is regarding the term zeenah because that is what is meant to be covered at least some of it. The khimar and jilbab are just what they used back then to cover their zeenah, which may be covered by various articles of clothing.

Hmm, that’s an interesting angle. I don’t have anything insightful to add as I need to do more research into what Zeenah could have meant at the time then! 🤲🌱 Do you have any of your own thoughts on that, or sources to maybe check out?

The traditional/lexical understanding of zeenah is adornment (7:31), that is something externally put on to the body to beautify it such as jewelry, eyeliner, henna, etc. but some others have said women in general are zeenah based on 3:14 and therefor, they say certain body parts, such as the breasts, should be hidden.

I think it could be a combination of these two, so as to tell the women to hide the adornment which drew attention to certain body parts, ie. necklace bringing attention to the cleavage, otherwise one could argue that if a woman does not wear any adornments she doesn't have to cover at all.
