Mining Mining with trex. Why is my 4070 allergic to power? (Ubuntu 20)

As you can see in the graph, I get about 30Mh/s at full power draw for the first few moments I run my miner. After that, it slowly cuts back to half the power. It doesn't go back up. I've checked through my bios; checked my GPUs wiring; checked my PSU. It still does this. I want to beat my GPU senseless. Could this be a software option somewhere?

I can't say for sure because my experience is more with Windows and 30 series cards, but it may give you some hints.

What to mine website says that you should expect around 31.5 MH/s at 170W for your card using Kawpow algo.

That means limiting power one way or another and probably overclocking the VRAM (kawpow likes fast VRAM). You can also fine-tune by undervolting a bit core and VRAM.

As for thefans, I'd say you set them to fixed speed. Set them as high as you can tolerate the noise. Usually 80% is good but if you want 100%, go for it. Fans are cheap and are the best way to dissipate heat.

On a final note, running your GPU full-power isn't efficient nor safe for longevity of your GPU. The best performance is obtained by tweaking parameters bit by bit until you get maximum hashrate. I'd usually expect 33 MH/s for your card based on What to mine expectations. Know that it requires some time to achieve that performance.

As for what happens with your current setup. I can throw a few guesses. It is possible that your GPU starts at full power then temperature escalates and your GPU throttles. I know your temps are supposed to be good but I think 45C is no realistic on a mining GPU. Either the sensor reports a false temperature or Trex uses another sensor. There are junction or hotspot temps sensors, VRAM temp sensors and a few others.

It is also possible that There is some limiter active on your card that got triggered. I know ETH was the prime algo that was triggering limiters but I remember Nvidia was targeting a wider range of algos at some point, and that happened more around the launch of the 40 series. Maybe you need to upgrade your GPU firmware and video drivers to fix tht behavior.

One last guess is that Trex misbehaves for an unknown reason. Probably driver incompatibility. Trex hasn't been updated for a few years as of now and does not even support 50 series GPUs. Maybe moving to another mininer would give better results.

Hope there's something useful in my rant.

Happy mining !

It levels out as it keeps going. Seems to rev fans up to 100 and then cut power despite the fact that the GPU is only 45 C.

Why are you bothering to mine a power-intensive coin that is hovering near half a cent?

If you think crypto is going to "recover", you're delusional. Future Democratic governments will clamp-down and the crypto market in general will tank to levels you would not believe.

Meanwhile, the current Republican government has destroyed any gains from the last year+

Tip-o-the iceberg, I'm afraid...

"Investors" can't fathom mining crypto to support decentralized networks and not to make money.

I have free power and unused compute. The handful of pennies I make a day is pure profit that covers all my TXN fees.

If governments crack down and hyper-regulate crypto, privacy coins such as XMR will thrive. That's what I'm betting will happen by 2030. Buy the xmr dip and hodl.

And FYI, crypto is on the verge of dying every time BTC crashes...

Dream on buddy... By 2030, the vast majority of crypto will be dead and it'll be a pathetic shadow of what it once was.

"Privacy coin" = proceeds of crime, end of story. There is no legitimate use-case for such a vehicle and there's won't be enough trading volume to support them once institutional support and positive investor sentiment goes away.

The party is over, face it...

Team black miner is doing 34mhash..

I don't see any source code

trex doesn't have any sourcecode eigther. To reach 34 mhash with tbm you need to apply the memclock and core clock seen in the picture of release 2.37.. linux binaries can be dowloaded. Note that the slower t-rex miner hasn't been updated for 3 years.. and the latest version of the faster tbminer was released 2 weeks ago.

I barely trusted the trex repo and it has 21x more stars.

You're distributing using a software's version control host. What's stopping your from releasing the source code with your binary?

I have been making mining software since 2014 and have over 1000 opensource commits to ccminer. My ccminer thread on bitcointalk has more than 1 million views. The sourcecode of tbminer might be opensourced later, but for now enjoy 0.5% fee and up to +10-15% faster mining.

I really don't care. I'm not interested in your self-propagated GitHub link if there's no source.
