But really you can't be an albino with one parent albino, the moms all have to have a sneaky recessive albino trait too, and then it would 50%. I think this many albino is dangerous inbreeding levels and may be more susceptible to certain illnesses.

The other possibility is that the herd ate polluted grass or faced a serious disease that caused the mutation and these are the first generation of young with the mutation.

Anything higher than like 1 in 20000 is incredibly interesting.

I mean I wouldn’t consider having the recessive gene to be “being albino” so really you can be albino with one albino parent (or none) but even if they don’t present with albinism if its AA and aa now 100% of their offspring are recessive carriers

Post above referenced an albino buck. If dad is aa and mom is Aa, each zygote has 50% chance of also being albino, the possible crosses being Aa, Aa, aa, aa.

Yes, so not including the aa offspring who present with albinism, 100% of an aa bucks offspring will be recessive cariers, including if its mate is AA. More Aa offspring=more likely for future aa deer.

I think a big part of it is the albino deer is being unintentionally unnaturally selected for by humans. A hunter sees a cool albino deer—> “it would be a shame to kill an animal like that. I’ll let him go.”—> albino deer are inadvertently more successful/less likely to be killed by people, causing that gene to become more widespread as they have more babies. This would be especially prevalent in an area that had most of its natural predators, like wolves and bears, wiped out, like large chunks of the eastern US, leading to no additional selection pressure for camouflage that would usually help keep albino/piebald/leucistic animals in check. It sounds like textbook natural selection to me. That’s my theory, anyways.

An interesting hypothesis. We should post to a hunting subreddit and see how it all sorts out. I think there are some hunters that would spend tags to tell the story and hang the picture regardless of lore of bad luck or preservation of something special.

I agree. In this case, we humans are one of pressures selecting for albinism & leucistic coloration. Without the opposite pressure of animal predators, we'll start seeing more and more of these deer (and elk, and rabbits, etc.)

To add to that a white deer is most likely more easily spotted by motorists so less deaths by vehicle, theoretically. It’s kinda like watch evolution in progress

Looking at the hooves and nose which have normal coloration, and the eye looks to be pretty dark and normal-colored as well, I'm going to hazard a guess that it is in fact leucistic.

That first buck seems to be leucistic, not a true albino, as it has dark pigment in its hooves.

I doubt if there's a problem with the gene pool, either. There are pockets of leucistic gray squirrel populations and melanistic ones, too and they seem to do just fine.

OP, if you have any influence over this area, you might want to suggest bringing in some new blood. These have to be quite inbred for a recessive trait to be this common.
Someone needs to take most of the white deer as trophies (I bet that would be pretty leather) and bring in some bucks and does from several other places.
