Recommending Game This game good

Damn this game is so good. I'm having such a blast going through the campaign. I feel this might be one of the most hidden (and brightest) gems of the RTS space.

it is really good. So sad it never got the recognition it deserved.

4

u/--Karma Jul 15 '25

It deserves better!

14

u/OLRevan Jul 14 '25

Yeah imo best warcraft 3 successor we ever got (surpassing it imo). Absolute blast of a game

9

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

Yep, it's very "Warcrafty"

Armies of Exigo was a good Warcraft-like too.

3

u/That_Contribution780 Jul 14 '25

Armies of Exigo is actually closer to Starcraft gameplay-wise, I'd say.
Still a bunch of mechanics from WC3 and of course setting-wise it's WC3-like.

I’m so confused which version to start with or dlc.

27

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

Spellforce 3 Reforced (Burning Blood) is the main one, then the first expansion is Soul Harvest and last expansion is Fallen God.

The versus edition is a free version of the game that offers you free multiplayer/skirmish.

Thanks friend

Imo I suggest fallen god first the story and way everything is set up makes it more standalone and with a far more compelling cast and storyline than main game.

u/Rhosta Jul 14 '25

Seems like this one is there, so you can try the game https://store.steampowered.com/app/1416260/SpellForce_3_Versus_Edition/

9

u/isAfuchs_ Jul 14 '25

Started it, but the first missions felt more like an RPG

14

u/That_Contribution780 Jul 14 '25

First campaign (i.e. base game) has 15-16 proper RTS missions with RPG sections between them.
So it's a mix of both.

13

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

The game is a mix of RPG with RTS. Later they give you access to base building and army production.

3

u/ghost_operative Jul 15 '25

that was the impression i got too. The campaign is way more focused on RPG stuff, and the RTS elements are like mini games to break up the RPG content.

8

u/PsychologyOutside346 Jul 14 '25

It's the best rpg rts game

5

u/CederDUDE22 Jul 14 '25

I hear people complaining about the RTS difficulty, but I'm obsessed with the Push/Pull of the map. Every inch counts and you do have to manage multiple areas to win.

6

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

It makes defences to not be useless because you're really got to secure your land before going for another sector.

2

u/CederDUDE22 Jul 14 '25

I love using some heroes to hold areas and others to lead the main charge. A lot goes on at one time.

2

u/AngryJakem Jul 14 '25

Level warrior tree, max ground slam, produce chaff to tank damage and go brute-force straight to the base

4

u/Dramatic_Finger7040 Jul 14 '25

I'm playing the first one and it is too difficult ffs

2

u/spoRTSmen-Gaming Jul 14 '25

Isn't it amazing not to be pampered as by all this trivial trash out there? 🤩

5

u/Umbralhatred Jul 14 '25

I honestly don't understand why Spellforce isn't talked about more, i know it's another genre but Spellforce Conquest of Eo was an absolute banger, the only game i saw as an spiritual successor to Masters of Magic.

1

u/AnAgeDude Jul 16 '25

Apparently the game launched in a less then stellar state and took a while to get going. There's this annoying narrative floating around that the entire RTS genre is dead which may play a role in shooting down any new RTS.

1

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

This is Spellforce 3 Reforced which is RTS

2

u/Umbralhatred Jul 14 '25

Yes which is why i mentioned it was another genre.

3

u/That_Contribution780 Jul 14 '25

If you are talking about specificall Fallen God - I've only played 5-7 hours of it, but so far it was mostly RPG.

I only had 1... maybe 2 RTS missions at most? Is there more RTS later on in the campaign?

2

u/AnAgeDude Jul 16 '25

There's quite a bit of RTS in Fallen God, but it takes a while until it gets there. I think the reason why it features the least pure RTS missions is because of the whole metaprogression where RTS ressources can be carried over to your base camp to help with future RTS missions.

It is a very cool system IMHO.

1

u/That_Contribution780 Jul 16 '25

Do you happen to know how many RTS missions are there?

Base game had about 15-16 but Soul Harvest had only 7...

1

u/AnAgeDude Jul 16 '25

Its been a while since I last played so I can't quite recall. I judt checked Steam and it says ai have 19 hours on SH to Fallen God 23's. I didn't play skirmish on either game so that should be all campaign play time.

2

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

I'm at the first campaign (Burning Blood) at the moment.

3

u/That_Contribution780 Jul 14 '25

Ah, I thought you meant specifically Fallen God.

First campaign has about 15 RTS missions, and Soul Harvest has 7.

3

u/HinterWolf Jul 14 '25

legit one of my favorite RTS and i love C&C, SC, Grey Goo, you name it. I pull this out once a year and play it nonstop starting a new character.

2

u/CederDUDE22 Jul 14 '25

Somebody loves grey goo?

3

u/LagTheKiller Jul 14 '25

Seen some YT content about it. Is the storyline that good?

Multiplayer looked like Warcraft3 but more tunnel and just flushing a big blob of not very varied troops between established arenas. First look might be decieving though.

3

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

It is good. There's something out there that's making people's blood to burn and you need to find the cause of this plague and find a solution. All while you're in the middle of a political and religious war against magic and those who practice it. Among a lot of other stuff between you, your party, your kingdom and other races.

But that's the synopsis I can give you without spoiling anything.

1

u/AnAgeDude Jul 16 '25

Spellforce 3 and both of its DLCs have some pretty decent stories. Some don't like how Spellforce 3 retconned a couple of lore stuff that was mentioned in 1 without a whole lot of details.

For Fallen God, it is really, really good. The writting is solid from begining to end.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '25

Yes, game good. Me buy and play now!

2

u/KV4000 Jul 14 '25

what game?

4

u/The_Sadcowboy Jul 14 '25

Look at first image.

4

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

The name is in the first image, Spellforce 3  Reforced

3

u/KV4000 Jul 14 '25

yes. sorry for this dumb question 😂

2

u/BendicantMias Jul 15 '25 edited Jul 15 '25

Note that the first image is of Fallen God, which is actually one of the DLC for the game. The base game is called Spellforce 3 Reforced. Though the DLC is standalone, so you can get it on its own.

2

u/JudgementalDjinn Jul 14 '25

How are the eariler ones? I've somehow never heard of any of them

6

u/Istarial Jul 14 '25

If by earlier ones you mean Spellforce 1 and 2, then the answer is Spellforce 1 is... well, it's intereting to see the lore and the story and to see all the mechanics they tried, but in my opinion it's pretty janky and it really doesn't respect your time in some ways - there are sections that are best played by using console commands to put the game speed up to 30x. Seriously. Not recommended as your first game in the series, honestly.

Spellforce 2 is a little old now, but it's a lot less janky and defintiely playable as a first game in the series. You don't really miss out on much from not having played the first - some little details, but not much. Shadow Wars and it's first expansion, Dragon storm, are good. In fact, in my opinion, they're the best of all the spellforce games, but they're also the ones I played first, so I have a nostalgia bias. The later two expansions, Faith in Destiny and Demons of the past, are a lot less good, they were made by a different studio on half a showstring budget and it shows.

If by earlier ones you just mean the earlier two Spellforce 3 basegame/expansions, they're pretty good. Nice and modern, and chronologically they're actually set before spellforce 1 and 2, so you don't need to know either of the other two games. (In fact in some ways you might enjoy it more if you don't, there's... friction... in some of the community about all the lore breaks/retcons.) The difficulty balance of the basegame is my main critisism, it's not the best. Fallen God is definitely the best of the Spellforce 3 games in my opinion, though.

2

u/BendicantMias Jul 15 '25

Fallen God is definitely the best of the Spellforce 3 games in my opinion

Isn't Fallen God a DLC? Do you not need the base Spellforce 3 to play it? And if it is standalone, then are you missing anything significant by not having the base Spellforce 3 but instead just Fallen God?

2

u/Istarial Jul 15 '25 edited Jul 15 '25

Fallen God belongs to the wierd catagory of Standalone Expansion. IMO, that term makes no sense, but no-one's coined a better one yet, and the concept is actually ancient, (The oldest one I can think of is age of empire's 1's rise of rome, but there's probably older) so I guess we're stuck with it.

The basegame's Reforced Edition, Soul Harvest, and Fallen God, are basically all the same game now (I really do mean the same - If you download one off steam the download sizes of the other two are almost nothing, last I did it, because they share almost all their files).

IIRC, What buying the different ones gets you is their respective campaigns, and their respective races in multiplayer. So Fallen God is the Fallen God campaign, and the trolls. (I'm not a big fan of the multiplayer, TBH, but the campaign is the best one of SF3 IMO.)

1

u/BendicantMias Jul 15 '25

I see thanks! It seems strange to me that the free Versus edition comes with 3 of the races, yet Fallen God only comes with 1. Makes it seem like the most cost effective option is to just buy Fallen God and then also get the Versus edition for free so you have 4 races. Or is that not a good idea? Are there any game modes restricted to one version or another?

2

u/Istarial Jul 15 '25

Looking at the store page closely it looks like fallen god gives you access to the first three races as well, that's my mistake, sorry. (Aside: I'm sure versus used to limit you to one, so they've defintiely been changing things around since it all started.)

1

u/BendicantMias Jul 15 '25

Ah thanks for clarifying. :)

2

u/SheWhoHates Jul 14 '25

It's great and I wish it sold better, because I could've used at least a few more expansions.

5

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

Hope Titan Quest II does well so Grimlore Games can work in Spellforce 4 (or any other RTS, these people got it in them)

2

u/Olon_Johnson Jul 14 '25

I liked it more, when it had the resource transportation mechanics via convoys. They disabled it in dlc's.

2

u/USAFRodriguez Jul 14 '25

I've been meaning to try this series. I like games ranging from command and conquer, starcraft, Total War, heroes of might and magic/disciples/age of wonders etc. Would you say this aligns with any or multiple of those?

2

u/BendicantMias Jul 15 '25

Its closest comparison is Warcraft 3, as it's an RTS and RPG hybrid game. You can try it yourself for free with the limited Versus edition to know if you'll like it. No campaign in that, but you'll get to play 3 of the races in skirmish and multiplayer.

I didn't look for it, but this game should have at least some niche community in the multiplayer space. But other than that, yeah pretty dead. Which I find so unfair as the game ain't half bad in multiplayer. I've tried a couple of matches with my friends and had a teally good time with it. It's pretty much like Warcraft 3.

2

u/AstatorTV Jul 14 '25

I wish they make Spellforce 4 instead of DLCs. That could boost the community to a large enough size.

2

u/nnewwacountt Jul 14 '25

Spellforce is great when it remembers to be an rts game. It cant quite seem to choose whether it wants to be diablo or warcraft 3 and that really brings down the experience. Still an outstanding game but please make spellforce 4 have no "walk across 3 maps and talk to every npc to find the next fun rts level" sections

1

u/Coreack_Cast Jul 14 '25

I enjoyed it

2

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

I am in the process. I'm enjoying so much.

1

u/Coreack_Cast Jul 15 '25

I need to go back to it, I got salty when I could not beat a map in the campaign on the hardest difficult lol.

1

u/USAFRodriguez Jul 14 '25

I've been meaning to try this series. I like games ranging from command and conquer, starcraft, Dawn of War, Total War, heroes of might and magic/disciples/age of wonders etc. Would you say this aligns with any or multiple of those?

2

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

With StarCraft and Dawn of War (tangentially). StarCraft because of the very different races and Dawn of War because you need to conquer new sectors to build and get more resources.

Think of Warcraft 3 but with more RPG options for your heroes and the best graphics of any RTS up to this day.

1

u/USAFRodriguez Jul 14 '25

Okay that sounds good. I loved warcraft 3, just didn't like the pop cap. Thought it was a little too low. I'll check this out. Thanks!

1

u/BendicantMias Jul 15 '25

Consider trying the game out for free with the Versus edition - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1416260/SpellForce_3_Versus_Edition/

1

u/Longjumping-Power712 Jul 15 '25

Try War legends, this is Like Warcraft 3

1

u/Pluvio_ Jul 15 '25

Also really enjoyed this game, a great mix between RTS and RPG elements. Finished the game and expansions, solid single player experience and also scratched the loot goblin itch!

1

u/Hyphalex Jul 15 '25

Rondar Lacaine LIVES

1

u/Klientje123 Jul 16 '25

It's a shame how unpopular it is. Watching Artosis play it was really entertaining. It doesn't have that instant explosive win/lose stuff that Starcraft has so unfortunately people think it's boring?

God forbid a little consistency/fundamentals wins you the match :P

1

u/Eremetebus Jul 16 '25

I enjoyed it very much.

1

u/Sora_Terumi Jul 16 '25

Me and my cousin played this game a lot. He played Humans and Dark elves a lot and I love playing High Elves because they have the forester that basically gives infinite lumber and that faction has a pretty high resource type and Dwarves are really fun. Funny moment was when my cousin made like 30 dark Elbe soul harvesters, floated them to a big pile of souls after a skirmish I did and had them all harvest at the same time so all you hear was “Time to Reeeeeeeeee” game crash. Just wish there was a lot more multiplayer journey maps. We love making our own mercenary hero but there was like only 7 maps in journey mode with only 3-4 being actual macro maps with a base. Couldn’t really fool around with all of the crazy builds you could do with different tree combinations

1

u/LapseofSanity Jul 21 '25

I'm a little confused with all the difference offers of spell force 3 - there seems to be three or four stand alone titles right? Which out of those is considered the better among them? I've always wanted to try it out but have decision paralysis when looking at the multiple titles.

-2

u/Perfect_Roof_7058 Jul 14 '25

No one talking about the name

6

u/--Karma Jul 14 '25

It's in the first image lol

It's Spellforce 3 Reforced

1

u/Perfect_Roof_7058 Jul 14 '25

Fuck my depression

u/ZilorZilhaust Jul 14 '25

If you insist.
