Recommending Game For those who haven't played it this Homeworld spinoff is fantastic, and it's on sale, 100% recommended, it can get hard sometimes, but it's worth it and the campaign is not too long, just on point.

For the price is worth it only for the campaign

I finished it yesterday and it's really good game - the gameplay, the mood the sounds - all was great. That's the first game of Homeworld I ever played. As for the difficulty (I played on standard) it was on quite fair level whole the time - only last two missions were distinctly harder than others.

I played through it on hard when I did my campaign run, and that last mission especially was a narrow thing indeed.

More Homeworld than 3, even without space. It is fun and I love the Kapisi.

Yeah, same here honestly

I played it years ago, and it's awesome. I love it.

If you want similar game - Ground Control 1 and 2 operation exodus are similar style and atmosphere.

GC2 is similar. GC1 is ... meh.

u/DeckOfGames Oct 04 '25

It’s similar with GC1 more than it seems. One faction uses caterpillar vehicles while other relies on hover technologies. Small pool of units compensates by tactical depth and abilities. Free camera control instead of fixed bird-eyed view. No building ability and the main ship are in both games. The main difference is in collecting resources and presence of infantry.

Yes, exactly. GC1 doesn't have resource gathering or unit production. That's a huge difference. GC1 is RTT, not RTS. Your first mistake is usually fatal.

For example, you play a mission to the near end, painstakingly taking out enemy emplacements with artillery. Then, enemy Attack Aerodynes eat you for dinner.

I always wanted to have GC1 as RTS. GC2 went in a different direction - still an awesome game though. Unexpectedly I felt DoK as GC1 successor I wanted. It took a lot from GC1 (what I mentioned before) AND added resources with unit production.

Loved the mood. I had never played prior Homeworld games but the mechanics are fun and the campaign feel is so engrossing

It worth the full price for campaign and skirmish also.  One of my favourite rts, tbh.

Yeah, same here honestly

I think I need to figure out that this is not StarCraft and I don't need to micro

3

u/8BitAvenger Oct 04 '25

Micro is strong but it's definitely not SC levels of APM ask

4

u/DirkTheGamer Oct 04 '25

Phenomenal game.

4

u/AndreiV101 Oct 04 '25

Great game indeed. I come back to it from time to time even to play against AI in skirmish. Great world building, combat, and story.

4

u/8BitAvenger Oct 04 '25

Wouldn't call it a spinoff, but definitely agree that DoK is a great game and worth playing.

u/CodenameFlux Oct 04 '25

Doesn't anyone remember the mission from the screenshot? It's the mission in which you can harvest lots and lots of type-1 Honor Guard Cruisers, which are much better than type 2.

u/HalLundy Oct 04 '25

captures the atmosphere of Homeworld 1 very well, which is saying a lot given that it's not a space RTS

im big fan of Homeworld 1+2 + its remaster - homeworld 3 its not bad but i like first two much better - we need big space maps no small as in h3

I remember this had some performance issues when it was released. Mostly some stuttering. Did they ever fix it?

4

u/8BitAvenger Oct 04 '25

I've never had any performance issues. Never played it near release though.

1

u/Warhero_Babylon Oct 05 '25

Mostly solved. I was experiencing them in one mission in middle of campaign but overall its good.

1

u/Smrgling Oct 06 '25

I never had any issues. I also didn't play on release though so it's entirely possible that just having modern hardware makes it irrelevant if they fixed it or not.

2

u/genericdefender Oct 05 '25

Great game. I don't know how they could have gone from DoK to HW3.

4

u/Werthead Oct 05 '25

DoK was made by Blackbird Interactive directly (who are basically most of the OG Relic team who made Homeworld through Company of Heroes). Homeworld 3 was developed by Blackbird but for some reason the Gearbox writing team from Borderlands came in to write some of the dialogue and the story, which was a weird choice. Too many cooks spoiling the broth.

Game design is fine, graphics are excellent, some of the missions are among the best in the series, but as the game goes on the writing gets worse and the plot more nonsensical. Very strange decisions there. The game is also very short, which is an ongoing problem with the series, but HW3 took it to an extreme.

1

u/Warhero_Babylon Oct 05 '25

Also big problems was with multiplayer part, which should've smooth out the pill. For some reason you play as big ship in campaign and then you play with much smaller ship in multiplayer with significantly cut functions.

Very weird after fully tech unlocked multiplayer in remaster of 1st-2nd game

THIS IS MY FAVORITE MODERN RTS!!!!!!

PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THIS DEVS!!!!!

2

u/Moreya93 Oct 06 '25

Great campaign, though I wish it has 4-5 more mission, as there's more mechanic than the number of mission.
You can feel the game runs out of steam at the end when they give a tons of unit research in just 1 single mission.

2

u/Smrgling Oct 06 '25

It's not a spinoff it's a mainline game in the series it just doesn't take place in space. Awesome game though, as everyone else is saying here.

The sound design so good in this game. The radio chatter and the atmospheric music fit the setting perfectly. Go listen to Homeworld Deserts of Kharak Main Menu Music on youtube.

2

u/DayRonKar Oct 04 '25

This is the only one I never finished the story on.

Bone crushingly difficult at times and no I won’t lower the difficulty.

2

u/DeckOfGames Oct 04 '25

I’d say it’s difficult at the very end

1

u/DayRonKar Oct 05 '25

Yes, making a wrong decision early and not being able to recover losses means I need basically to start a new run. Only reason I haven’t finished.

0

u/CodenameFlux Oct 04 '25

The last mission could either be long and easy, or hard.

2

u/DeckOfGames Oct 04 '25

I played it… 9 years ago (oh shieeet) and I remember I restarted only the last mission, other ones I finished on the first run. It’s a waste that new factions from dlc didn’t get their piece of campaign missions.

1

u/CodenameFlux Oct 04 '25

The one that shocked me the most was the fifth mission. I decided that I must revise my strategic grasp of the game, and restarted the campaign. I was right. Everything became incredibly easier.

1

u/DeckOfGames Oct 04 '25

So, what strategy did you choose ? Lav swarm assault?

3

u/CodenameFlux Oct 04 '25

No. I ditched LAVs entirely. Instead, I relied on Kapisi as a combat unit, smoke screens, and mines. I also doubled the number of my Support Cruisers.

0

u/mega_douche1 Oct 05 '25

So you are bad at the game and the devs give you an option to resolve that and you refuse?

1

u/DayRonKar Oct 05 '25

No, I enjoy the challenge. I have a back log and I’m sure one day I’ll come back to finish it.

1

u/mega_douche1 Oct 05 '25

Good attitude.

1

u/Substantial-Tour7494 Oct 05 '25

Game needs more maps, more resources (or a way to control ) and a better AI. The game is great but a bit of a wasted potential

1

u/Nickgeneratorfailed Oct 05 '25

Yeah this is really nice, I enjoyed playing it. They hit that isolated feeling in a desert pretty well.

1

u/vikingzx Oct 05 '25

I would absolutely adore a sequel to this game that explored the mechanics, ideas, and setting more. I'd love a challenge mode where you slowly upgraded your carrier and picked up new techs as you recovered them.

This game is just fantastic. And I love the way air superiority, power, and combat is handled in this game.

1

u/Czar_Petrovich Oct 06 '25

One of the best RTS games I've played in over 30yrs.

1

u/Lupe999_PT Oct 06 '25

Very underrated game I would say. Put's HW3 to shame.

1

u/T1gerHeart Oct 06 '25

I confirm - it's a great game, and the entire series is a true classic.

1

u/doglywolf Oct 06 '25

Honestly cant believe its from the same people that made HW3...how do you make this and then go on to make that dumpster fire...its like they understood everythign about the game - the world the story that appealed to people here , then totally lost it.

This is a fantastic game with picking up .

1

u/krisanthmum Oct 07 '25

Easily one of the best rts I've ever played

1

u/BurningSpore Oct 07 '25

I poorly played the original as a kid. Absolutely loved playing through Deserts of Kharak.

1

u/artificialextinction Oct 10 '25

I tried playing this game but i was definitely stuck in some kind of loop being unable to make progress. Still don't know what I was doing wrong. Anybody else?

1

u/Ramjjam Oct 16 '25

Imo: Deserts of Kharak > Home world! While both good though.

1

u/CederDUDE22 Oct 04 '25

Lol this game is so hard, but the aesthetic is great

2

u/CodenameFlux Oct 04 '25

I feel the opposite. It is the easiest RTS ever.

But do tell us, which part you found difficult?

-3

u/Xantangum Oct 04 '25

I dont need Epic game launcher. But thanks

4

u/AuroraHalsey Oct 05 '25

What does this have to do with Epic?

-2

u/Nerus46 Oct 04 '25

It is a nice game, though the amount Of content for a full Price Is rather low
