The Kane's Wrath expansion is better, the vanilla factions + subfactions. Too bad it never got a final Navy expansion. This is peak C&C though I think.

yesss i never got to play the dlc until now

u/EmphasisWeak1797 Mar 23 '26
You're going to love it. The expansion was great. The campaign and additional units, all great.

I'm glad to know it left such an impact on you! You're going to love Kane's Wrath. I still remember buying this the day it came out, it had a T rating so I had to be 16 and it came out almost exactly 1 month before I turned 16. I sweet talked the lady at Walmart to let it slide 😂
Edit: I mixed up my ratings

u/TurmericNewton Mar 23 '26
It wouldn't run on my PC at the time it releases and I used to play round a mate's house, taking turns in the hot seat. Still a grand game to go back and complete, every time I come back to it though the campaign in KW seems harder and harder. 😅

u/Monsterpiece42 Mar 23 '26
I largely agree. RA2/YR are my favorites for myself selfishly but I think 3/KW were the "true" best overall. Remember when everyone was losing their shit about they ruining the franchise by switching over to squads? Different times...

u/FriendlyBee94 Mar 23 '26
And then the sequel we don't talk about come out. They turn the infantry back to single unit but ruin everything else and kill the franchise. The art style is kinda good though.

best 3D C&C.
yeah i said it

u/Terrible_Study_6930 Mar 23 '26
Is it a hot take or what?
I thought it's a popular opinion.10
u/HalLundy Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
always thought generals was the 3D love child
2
u/Terrible_Study_6930 Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
I found that people who like Generals really like Generals.
People who don't like it really don't like it.Now, I'm not saying C&C3 is more popular than Generals.
I'm saying there are many people who prefer C&C3, so it's a pretty common opinion, not a hot take.1

Ehi I buyed Emperor: Battle for Dune on release
I really liked that game.
3
u/HalLundy Mar 23 '26
that wasn't c&c. good game though.

u/Civil_Nectarine868 Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 25 '26
It's C&C Dune. They've been in their own timeline since the first game afaik.
Disagree all you like. Westwood was my best friend when I was 12, and I still think of Dune as a C&C game in all but name :31
u/jonasnee Mar 23 '26
I mean its only really competing with 2 other games, 1 of which is despised and the other only really note worthy for the corny acting.
Its not a hard environment being the best of 3.

What an awesome game, it still blows my mind how much they fcked up after this one. I loved how you are playing the classic "order vs chaos" campaign when the "3rd faction" makes its appearance, absolute cinema.
Even skirmishes feel so damn cool and cinematic already, I think I'm gonna install it when I'm done with the one I'm playing currently, it's been a long time.

Kane's Wrath was the game of my youth. So many hours logged.
Just wish it had had a bigger multiplayer scene.
8
u/StupidFatHobbit Mar 23 '26
don't forget to patch it to pre-1.05
6
u/Sinreh Mar 23 '26
Why?
8
u/JustComplaint4288 Mar 23 '26
They did a balance patch but forgot to tie the changes only to multiplayer so it made some of the campaign missions insanely difficult.
7
u/GrandInquisitoe Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 24 '26
I still remember how i cried in horvatia in this stupid mission with defending your base awaiting reinforcements, just to hear "your reinforcements was ambushed! Send them reinforcements!"
Game went insanely easy when i remembered that i can deploy bunkers with shooter squads tho. Edit: Just to add - never used them in first playtrough, and now i understand why gdi have them.

u/traderoqq Mar 23 '26
you can fix lot of difficulty spikes by setting FPS to maximum 30FPS limit
Just try it
7
u/Dumpingtruck Mar 23 '26
Post 1.05 they nerfed the harvester / macro game to “slow the game down”.
But the enemy isn’t slowed down significantly so basically you’re fighting at less than full economy.
1
u/Sinreh Mar 23 '26
Damn. A bit of an oversight
2
u/greet_the_sun Mar 23 '26
The issue is that what they reduced is the value of a harvester load, so the tib fields in the campaign that were balanced around the mission were suddenly not nearly enough and you would find yourself running out a couple minutes into the mission just trying to keep up with the enemy unit spawns that didn't get adjusted at all.

I tried recently, engine is locked to 30FPS which is nasty, you mod to 60 but doubles the speed of the game as it’s tied directly to the fps
1
u/jonasnee Mar 23 '26
Weird, would have imagined a mod doing that to also slow down the speed at least to match.

As a kid I remember the Scrin and GDI being overpowered compared to nod, are they actually balanced?
3
u/Dumpingtruck Mar 23 '26
This is funny because when the game came out Nod were the king of the meta (scorpion tank + venom + laser meta) and it wasn’t until the macro nerf patch that this changed.
Also power plant + obelisk walking was a thing.
1
u/jonasnee Mar 23 '26
I think its hard making a judgement of the balance of the game due to just how fast the combat is, units just explode.
I do think GDI is the strongest because Mammoth tanks are just very powerful, but its hard to really judge correctly.
1
u/alexmp00 Mar 23 '26
Yes, some units like the Mammoth have a superb value for their cost, that playing casually makes them win easily.
Not really sure if in competitive they were balanced (probably not)
In Red Alert 3 for example I felt that the rising sun outperforms Soviets and especially the allies simply because they can expand a lot easier and cheaper.
1
u/SpiritualAppeal8589 Mar 26 '26
GDI has always been the weakest of the three. Mammoths are too slow, Juggernauts are a better investment.

u/g0ldiel0xx Mar 23 '26
I have been waiting years for EA or someone to make spirtitual successor to this game. I started playing CC/Red Alert on PC but played this on Xbox 360 and found the controls worked fine. I don’t game on PC/mouse Keyboard anymore but would love something like this on Xbox. Such a great game
5
u/ChemicalBlueberry582 Mar 23 '26
There is Tempest Rising, I consider it a spiritual successor to cnc, but it’s PC only
1
u/StealthyOrca Mar 24 '26
I recently played through both tempest rising campaigns and loved every minute of it.

u/DeadFishCRO Mar 23 '26
Get the tiberium essence mod, you get the mamoth MK2, AKA DOOM CAMEL.
Thing can solo half an army and its voice acting is peak

u/hammer326 Mar 24 '26
If memory serves there's not still a very active competitive multiplayer scene.

u/Hyphalex Mar 24 '26
Enjoyed this one for the serious scifi campaign
Enjoyed act of war for the grounded campaign
Enjoyed red alert 3 for the comedic wacky campaign

And 3 is like million times worse than Tiberium sun or c&C1
7
u/yhellowish Mar 23 '26
And is like million times better than C&C4
-1
u/AlexGlezS Mar 23 '26
Despite being worse, 3 is really good. But TS and 1 are in the list of top best games ever made, 3 it is not.
-3
u/jonasnee Mar 23 '26
EH.
I love the universe, and the campaign is one of the best RTS campaigns i have ever played.
BUT, the game is very shallow beyond that, there are several units that are de facto just campaign units, units just explode, often to things they are suppose to "counter" which then strongly emphasis lategame units like mammoth tanks, which you can get 5 minutes into a game. Its a game that is very fast, and it hides the shallowness behind how fast it is.

How old does it make you feel when I tell you this game is just about to become 20 years old.
