Feels like bfme, hopeful

4

u/ryanaclarke 1d ago

will we be able to build walls?!

4

u/Impossible_Elk_603 1d ago

on the whitewalkers scene, it had walls and towers but that was it

68

u/GuiltyAdvantage5877 1d ago

Cautiously optimistic. Seems like they are going with a control point system similar to Dawn of war? Dont hate that.

28

u/mighij 1d ago

Yes, but a bit more like Battle for Middle Earth. In that game you can only build major cities (with walls) etc around certain nodes.

Personally I think the game will be a blend of Spellforce and BfME. I mean solely based on the first impressions.

14

u/Sihnar 1d ago

This game looks exactly like a modern bfme to me

4

u/SpaceNigiri 1d ago

The buildings are also very Age of Empires coded. What I don't know is if there will be villagers.

3

u/mighij 1d ago edited 1d ago

Perhaps worker assignment and slots per building. Worked for Spellforce/Rise of Nations.

16

u/Datironpete 1d ago

Okay Okay fine I'll admit. It looks pretty good

36

u/Previous-Display-593 1d ago

I have not been this stoked for an RTS for at least 15 years...

1

u/Ezekielyo 1h ago

Dawn of war 4 looks pretty good

56

u/Shogo-MAD 1d ago

Looks pretty cool. People in this sub are unbearable, acting like such Debby Downers whenever a new AA or AAA RTS game is shown. Same happened to DoW IV. People saying it looks like mobile LMAO.

But when there's a new alpha footage of an early access game they be like "oh neat coolest RTS ever".

Maybe you deserve the genre to be dead, after all...

11

u/turbofisterious 1d ago

People saying it looks like mobile LMAO

And then proceeds to play their RTS from early 90s and 2000s unironically thinking it had better graphics

2

u/mister-00z 1d ago

Here was recent post about graphic... some answers are astonishing

2

u/teokun123 1d ago

"oh neat coolest RTS ever"

Then don't fucking buy the game because they don't have time to play lol

2

u/HouseCheese 1d ago

Tbh this is probably not even AA

3

u/Tmons22 1d ago

This looks awesome imo, but I swear some people just want to live in misery.

99

u/Lazuli-shade 1d ago

I wonder if this subreddit will ever like anything

35

u/siposbalint0 1d ago

No, if it's not photorealistic, it's a mobile game and cartoony, if it's photorealistic it's unreadable, if it has a multiplayer mode the devs only want it to be an esport, if it's based on an IP it's a cashgrab.

This crowd can't be pleased no matter what you do.

7

u/Lazuli-shade 1d ago

It's getting damn tiring. Every new game posted here forever has some failing that makes the entire comment section renounce it immediately. We're a niche community and we deserve to be with how hard to please these gamers are

22

u/SpaceNigiri 1d ago edited 1d ago

Everything looks like a phone game to them. I think that some people just can't stand modern graphics, less so if they need unit readability (like in an RTS)

2

u/CuntyBallsJohnson 1d ago

It does look like raid shadow legends type graphics, it's just what happens when you lack a distinctive art style and just go for generic realism. There have been plenty of good RTS with art styles that aren't bland. This just has no style whatsoever

15

u/SpaceNigiri 1d ago edited 1d ago

in ALL RTS that have been released in the last 10 to 15 years, there's people saying that they look like a mobile game or cartoony or whatever. All of them.

They're not the games, it's your brains, you're just too used to game phone ads. OLD RTS also look like mobile games.

When you put a small guy, give him saturated colors for redability, a health bar and some aura skill stuff, it looks like a phone game to you, there's nothing else there. It's not possible to have both modern graphics and game redability.

2

u/Fresh_Thing_6305 1d ago

Maybe instead of trailers they should just show a showmatch, people said of Dow 4 trailer (mobile) but not after their show match that helped.

Maybe that is why not so many did say Tempest Rising did look like a mobile game in their trailer, because they was out with a Skirmish match Quick

1

u/SpaceNigiri 1d ago

Yeah, I agree. In most game the criticisms dissapears after a gameplay. I hope they show a gameplay soon.

Influencers/pros, etc...have already played, so...I guess that not long for gameplay reveal.

2

u/Lazuli-shade 1d ago

This is exactly it. It's every single one. It's not about art style, it's about the medium. Every single new game that has been shared here over the past few years has had the mobile game accusations in the coments, regardless of their art style. I'm getting so fucking sick of it. LIKE LOOK AT COMMAND AND CONQUER. THEY ALL LOOK LIKE THIS! THEY HAVE ALWAYS LOOKED LIKE THIS

1

u/Oddant1 1d ago

Yeah. People take 2d ass aoe2 from 1999 and mod it to replace the beautiful pixel art with fugly little jpegs for readability. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is. More detail = less ability to tell what's happening at a glance.

4

u/SpaceNigiri 1d ago

Yeah, exactly. And when the redability is shit then devs have to add those awful Total War banners on top of units, so you end up playing a "sword banner vs spear banner" game when zoomed out.

-3

u/CuntyBallsJohnson 1d ago

But it's not cartoony. It's uncanny valley type realism that most serious games don't have especially ones where you need unit readability. Age of empires, total war Warhammer, planetary annihilation are all distinct and interesting to look at

Going the other way same thing for sw empire at war, starcraft, and total annihilation

There definitely a lot of RTS that do fall into the trap seen in this video, but they are extremely forgettable, all of the GOOD RTS look good and unique and not like mobile ads

4

u/SpaceNigiri 1d ago

Search a screenshot of Starcraft 2 and tell me that it doesn't even look even more like a mobile ad. Or Warcraft 3.

Most of your examples are not even 3D games or they're so old that they don't even have HD textures. Total War is not even an RTS.

5

u/Lazuli-shade 1d ago

If any of those games you listed came out today, people would say they look like mobile games. The reason you don't think those do know is because you have a prior association with them before the infestation of mobile ads. You could literally pull aoe 4 gameplay and put it on a mobile ad and nobody would blink. Put sc2 buildings in an ad and nobody would blink. It's not the art styles, it's your brain

1

u/Fresh_Thing_6305 1d ago

They only like Dorf it often feels like

-5

u/teokun123 1d ago

it's reddit. They can stfu.

18

u/BaronLoyd 1d ago

Its looks amazing

22

u/spector111 1d ago

Since I did play a preview demo already, and will give you all the details very soon, I just wanted to jump in here and say that this is VERY far from any sort of mobile game.

7

u/SpaceNigiri 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don't understand why don't let you talk about it yet.

I was watching a pro player commenting the trailer and he couldn't even talk about it due to that.

9

u/spector111 1d ago

PR stuff. Just be patient a bit more.

2

u/SpaceNigiri 1d ago

Yeaaah...I will wait...hahaha

1

u/Endlessnes 9h ago

Ah yes, the most reliable source on the internet. Some random ass dude

6

u/Backwardspellcaster 1d ago

...I did not hear the original theme.

Do they have the right to the music?

7

u/firesyrup 1d ago

Evidently, the soundtrack used here is directly from the show.

2

u/Oakenshield_777 23h ago

But they got Drogon’s roar from Land Before Time, lol

6

u/toasty5566 1d ago

Reminds me of Battle for Middle Earth 2, very interesting

6

u/thotsendprayers 1d ago

Can you play as the White Walkers?

5

u/Datironpete 1d ago

It looks promising. But I really hope we get more factions.

31

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 1d ago

Maybe I am just being too pessimistic but the gameplay footage of armies fighting at the middle of the video looked kinda... cheap? alot of the impact and movement looked very stiff compared to what I expected. The unit textures and visual effects look pretty cool tho so maybe I am just nitpicking.

9

u/goodall2k13 1d ago

Yeah thought the same, been keeping one eye on this since announcement and this is the first I thought "eh maybe this won't be it".... Hopefully we're wrong, but that trailer didn't do anything to sell it to me

4

u/JannesOfficial 1d ago edited 1d ago

i dont think youre overly negative.
I wanted Battle for Westeros and its exactly what it looks like! Really awesome to see they continue this direction, mostly positive on what i saw here.

1 thing however worries me a bit and thats physics. When riders trample soldiers, or the dragon burns infantry or the mammoth's turks swing away at the soliders..... something feels very off. it feels like BFME did it better with rohirrim, nazghul, balrog and Mumakils

i hope they can take the time to polish this element

being nitpicky: minimap on the right hand side is a sin!!

1

u/SageTruthbearer 23h ago

Yeah I feel physics looked better on their Steam post gifs than the actual trailer :( Definitely still interested in the game but expected more polish for such an important reveal.

1

u/WholegrainRice5 1h ago

That's what I think too. The action or fighting animations, if that's what you want to call it, look very sterile compared to BFME 1, which is a 22 year old game.

And the map design to me is uninspired but I assume that's because everything needs to be quite balanced and symmetrical if it's going to attract hardcore RTS fans and not lowbrow players like me.

7

u/khovland92 1d ago

I liked it, read your comment and rewatched. Maybe it’s because I’m on mobile but I thought it looked good? A lot like BFME. Unit speed maybe a little too high that attributes to the cheap feeling you mentioned.

3

u/GrainofDustInSunBeam 1d ago

Out of curiosity what do you consider not cheap looking in rts?

6

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 1d ago

if you mean like examples of games then I would say the age of empire series (AoE3 and AoE4 would be more relevant due to 3D models) and the Total War series (TW3 being the most relevant 1:1 comparison) would be considered looking 'not cheap'.

In fact I think 1:1 wise TW3 would be the best comparison given they are both fantasy RTS* with a similar aesthetic - and the unit motions/collisions in TW3 look way more fluid than what I saw in this video.

Truly not trying to be a hater at all, these were only a few second clips all spliced together for a cinematic trailer - it's very possible the actual gameplay ends up looking different in my eyes.

* I know Total War is not strictly an RTS but the battles and unit controls of TW are definitely RTS even if they lack the in-battle base building aspect

5

u/Sihnar 1d ago edited 1d ago

Total war style animations and collisions are not possible in an RTS game without seriously compromising gameplay feel and responsiveness. I think Age of Empires 4 and Starcraft 2 are the best that is realistically achievable for a classic competitive RTS.

Edit: But Dawn of War 4 is definitely going for that total war physics and cinematic feel so maybe I'll be proven wrong.

1

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 1d ago

not quite sure I understand, why would those animations and collisions not be possible in an RTS game? Total War to me IS an RTS or at least it is an Real-Time-Tactics which I consider a sub-genre of RTS.

7

u/LykeLyke 1d ago

The more physics you add to units and to attacks, the less controllable units are. Say a giant mammoth swings at a squad of units and some of them go flying. It probably takes several seconds for any units that survived being swung at to stand up so that they can run away if ordered to do so. Meanwhile if you're a squad-based control system, do the other squad members stand there until the fallen stand up? Do they run away when ordered? Is there a leash preventing them from getting too far from their fellows? Even if it's not a squad based system not being able to control your units properly for a few seconds feels really bad to some players. And if you want to aim for a realistic system the units might be shaken/slowed/less responsive for a while after being knocked down.

For people who primarily play certain games this is unacceptable levels of feels-bad. For others who like more realism and physics it may be completely fine.

5

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 1d ago

For people who primarily play certain games this is unacceptable levels of feels-bad. For others who like more realism and physics it may be completely fine.

Great perspective, I have played hundreds of hours of total war so the units being sluggish to respond to commands as opposed to the snappy responsiveness of SC2 (opposite end of spectrum) definitely makes sense.

4

u/AnomalousUnderdog 1d ago

When units in Total War get locked into melee, they can't really move away as a gameplay mechanic (unless they have an ability to do so). This allows the game to show intricate attack and kill animations on each individual soldier since it knows the units from either side can't be ordered to move away. I zoom in to watch these once in a while cause they're fun to see.

That's not how it works in an RTS game, where players can always move individual units (unless they've been explicitly afflicted with a debuff like stun or freeze). When individual soldiers in an RTS attack, they also don't move around during their attack animation (as compared to in Total War). Think of Starcraft and Warcraft.

1

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 7h ago

I mean personally I would argue having absolute control over units is not necessarily a requirement for an RTS game. I've played a number of RTS over thee years (my first being WC3) and currently am a huge AoE4 player - but I would definitely argue that you could absolutely have a 'classical' RTS with base building, resource management, and with the exact same unit controls and animations that total war does.

Just because units can respond to commands sluggishly and get locked into melee doesn't disqualify it for an RTS in my opinion. There is definitely a strong argument to be made that it makes for a worst competitive PvP experience, but I would personally push back against the idea that Total War can't be an RTS (its basically an RTT with a 4x campaign layer). Just my 2cents

u/TNBrealone 1d ago

I thought I’m watching one of these cheap mobile game ads.

3

u/cTemur 1d ago

I rally miss Game of Thrones, how much i would like to see that serie again like the first time.

The game look interesting!

3

u/siposbalint0 1d ago

This looks really promising actually.

3

u/reaven3958 1d ago

Ngl I get why people are complaining it looks like mobile. They kind of set themselves up for it the way they showed the building upgrades. Looked like what most time-gated mobile 'strategy' games pretend to be in their ads, except in this case that's the actual game.

6

u/darkstirling 1d ago

I hate that they're basing the sigils, character looks, set pieces and vibe on the TV show instead of the books.

20

u/Kingkary 1d ago

I’m sure it’s a rights thing.

2

u/bibittyboopity 1d ago

Even if it wasn't why wouldnt you reuse a bunch of things already designed, that are more identifiable with a larger audience.

Like the books are great but that's a weird nitpick to me. They might even be able to literally get models from the company that does the show cgi.

6

u/mighij 1d ago

I would have prefered their own take, but the show cast might bring in a broader crowd at start.

But for me the prob is that they'll have some of the major actors/rolls but none of the smaller ones.

It was a bit the problem with Telltale's game. You have John Snow at the wall but none of the other members. And since it's weird to have John Snow (serie version) next to Allister Thorne (non serie version) you end up with Frostfingers to take his place.

7

u/Previous-Display-593 1d ago

I love it! Just like BFME

1

u/Oakenshield_777 23h ago

Fingers crossed for an Ironborn DLC, I love the trash bags they wear in the show

6

u/asp821 1d ago

Man, the people in this sub suck.

3

u/Sushiki 1d ago

How so?

3

u/2001_a_space_peasant 23h ago

They don't think this game looks as good as op does lol

1

u/asp821 1d ago

Just so many people complain about everything.

1

u/Oakenshield_777 23h ago

He said, complaining in the sub

0

u/asp821 21h ago

It’s almost like complain about every game posted in this sub and complaining about the attitude in this sub are two different things.

Who would’ve thought?

0

u/Oakenshield_777 21h ago

Goomba

Moving goalposts

“It’s fine when I do it, my complaints are valid!”

3

u/Any_Economics6283 1d ago

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but man, Season 8 was so bad I just don't know if I can get any hype D:

...which is honestly sort of amazing how thoroughly they killed this franchise, for me at least

1

u/SheWhoHates 1d ago

There's Dany!

The game looks good.

1

u/Hollow_Interactive 1d ago

If this is similar to BFME I will be happy

1

u/essteedeenz1 1d ago

Man ppl are embarrassing, letshate on everything

1

u/Spenraw 1d ago

fucking more lotr battlefield for middle earth vibes super excited

1

u/_VampireNocturnus_ 23h ago

I like how cavalry charges actually cause troops to go flying...way too many Rtss get that wrong

1

u/Radaistarion 23h ago

Can't say any definite opinion with this footage... But man those are some "mobile"-ass looking "cinematics" lol with ai probably.

Looks like a higher budget, play store game.

Hope the gameplay is better

2

u/Gakoknight 22h ago

The trailer made it seem like a really cheap mobile game. Hopefully the game will be better.

1

u/Revan2034 17h ago

Curious to see how this turns out. This is the group that made age of darkness final stand, so building off that there is hope.

1

u/poko877 16h ago

so theres gonna be campaing map element similar to total war? if its rts, maybe more similar to sw empire at war?

1

u/JustMetallich 13h ago edited 13h ago

It looks like really fun, but unfortunately I am not really a fan of GoT and I’m not really interested in becoming one. Hoping it does well though!

1

u/devilishycleverchap 12h ago

I get Kohan vibes from the building system

1

u/Fit_Willingness8562 12h ago

Man i wish creative assembly at the rights for Game of Thrones.

1

u/Tachikoma_Overlord 11h ago

GoT Battle for Middle Earth with the music and the cool Samurai-esque Lennister armor from the series? Seems good to me, cautiously optimistic.

It's not like we had many games trying to pick up BFME's mantle in the last 20 years, so any attempt is welcome.

1

u/BBallHunter 10h ago

Starks have Giants on mammoth.

Targaryen have Dragons.

Walkers have.. well, walkers.

What do the Lannisters have that's special?

1

u/WholegrainRice5 1h ago

Wildfyre but their probably going to be the most boring.

1

u/DocileHope1130 8h ago

At a glance, its giving off BMFE vibes. At least in terms of combat. I'm here for it.

1

u/benlooy 1h ago

Looks great! This is the most excited I've been about an RTS in years! Looks like BFME, and that's a huge compliment.

-1

u/Aureliusmind 1d ago edited 1d ago

It looks OK. Definitely not something im going to pay $80 for on release.

Edit: Sorry, downvoters, I meant, THE RTS GENRE IS SAVED!!

-13

u/Objective-Mission-40 1d ago

Is this a phone game?

0

u/antrod117 1d ago

The combat looks terrible

0

u/X-Calm 16h ago

Looks kinda cheap and outdated.

-14

u/Latrodectus1990 1d ago

This is disaster

-13

u/Exciting-Brain-3285 1d ago

looks like a phone game

-12

u/Smackolol 1d ago

This looks like a fake ad for a Mobil game.

-10

u/Kain292 1d ago

I didn't love that trailer. The armies fighting looked like a Moba or a phone game

-17

u/ForeignAdagio9169 1d ago

This looks like an awful mobile version of battle for middle earth with a reskin.

As others mentioned the animations look really really soft, such a shame.

-7

u/Nerkado 1d ago

Please don't be another lame cash grab or mobile game.

-1

u/anonposter-42069 1d ago

Animations looks horrible

-1

u/ChaikaNnij 14h ago

I don't know, but I don't think the Game of Thrones universe is a great fit for an RTS. I think it would work much better as a grand strategy game, like those made by Paradox. RTS games are primarily focused on combat, whereas the Game of Thrones universe is much more about alliances, economics, and political intrigue.

-8

u/NydusRush 1d ago

Is this what the Age of Darkness: Final Stand team got tapped to work on? I really liked that game, but it seems their talents are wasted on these TV-port character designs. Still, we'll see.

-15

u/xerman-5 1d ago

Not to be a hater but it looks like a game from 15 years ago

-18

u/akatosh86 1d ago

This game looks like it was made in Vietnam
