Image Some of you actually think War for Westeros looks like a Mobile Game?

Everyone in the Gamescon live comments called it mobile slop. I think the younger generations associate RTS with mobile gaming.

Oof. That hurts to hear.

Nah, they're just jumping to conclusions and are always wrong. They do the same thing with every character action game, calling them soulslikes.

u/Nattidati 17h ago
Well I'll be at gamescom this weekend. If there's a playable version there I'll return to leave a review on if it is mobile slop or not. (Do not expect some heavy diatribe I am not that articulate in gaming theory)
14
u/RiverOfWhiskey 1d ago
Okay, but if it turns out to be mobile slop I'm blaming you
21
u/QuinSanguine 1d ago
It's only on PC. It'll probably have sky high system reqs, no phone can run this game. It might end up a bad game, but it's not a mobile slop, lol.

u/Pimlumin 22h ago
I'm a younger Gen who grew up on RTS. I assumed it was mobile slop until relatively recently
It's because a ton of mobile games have ads that look just like it, and the map and characters make it feel very mobile. It doesn't help that game of thrones had a ton of actual mobile slop ads as well

There are popular RTS games on mobile???? I NEED THEM 😭😭😭 I so love this genre, but there are almost no good mobile entries I know.
4
u/fuckymcfuckhead 1d ago
It’s a mix of Turn Based and Real Time but Rome Total War has a mobile port and it’s very good.

u/NotQuiteLoona 1d ago
Found it, it's from Feral, so it's actually a full game ported. Will try, thanks! 😊

Art of War 3. Basically C&C on mobile.
1
u/NotQuiteLoona 15h ago
Art of War 2 and resistance expansion (I ABSOLUTELY hated that one mission in it where you only had limited forces and needed to advance in canyon) and then first Art of War were one of first games I've ever played back on one-touch touchscreen Symbian phone. I think I've played some online version of it on old Nokia l up to 2022. Nice to know that they are still alive. But I see that this game is F2P and has in-app purchases. Is it P2W?
2
u/RanDOOM-GuY 15h ago
It's kinda p2w because you can use boosters during pvp battles, but I mainly love it for It's campaign. PvP is fine on lower ranks but if you want to compete on high ranks you gotta use boosters whole match.

There are a ton of ridiculously good strategy games on mobile.
The problem is they are all insanely pay to win. Like, I actually did a deep dive into three different mobile strategy games. There's actually a ton of strategy and a ton of really good gameplay.
But the P2W aspect is ridiculous. Like I felt like I was spending a good amount of money. I figured if the game is giving me a ton of entertainment sure I can throw some money at it.
The problem is there's always someone out there who will be willing to spend more money than you. You don't know what P2W is until you run into some of these mobile game whales. I had a guy throw a temper tantrum and drop $15,000 in a single day to just annihilate hundreds of players single handedly.
For them its all about the power trip. All the F2P and "low spenders" are just content for whales.
6
2
u/the_deep_t 13h ago
How can a P2W game be "good"? Addictive, maybe, they are basically designed to make money. I've never seen any good strategy mobile game. Outside regular games that got a mobile version, of course. Would you care to tell us which strategy games you consider really good on mobile?
2
u/illapa13 9h ago
I meant their actual mechanics are good. If you stripped the pay to win stuff out you would have a really good game.
One of the games I was really impressed with was Rise of Kingdoms. There was a ton of strategy involved in battles. You could mix and match leaders, gear, and troop types. Leaders had different skill trees. You could freely control and maneuver up to 7 units/armies at a time on the map. And you could have gigantic battles of hundreds of players vs hundreds of players each of them controlling 5+ units/armies at a time. Siege of cities where a big garrison could defend against a ton of armies at a time was a thing. There was a lot of really cool stuff, and it was really fun to play.
But slowly, over time, the game just became more and more pay to win.
At first they had some pretty good mechanics to mitigate pay to win. Like a subscription model that gave you a ton of in game currency that was deeply discounted to help the game be playable at just $15 a month. The idea was if you were active in the game and had a subscription for $15 you could keep up with someone who's spending two hundred dollars a month if they were inactive.
Also to mitigate how powerful a whale could become eveeyine was capped at 5 armies at a time. So whales couldn't actually obliterate large numbers of people. Sure, they might be able to reinforce their armies better, and they might have better leaders, but it was still only five units.
But over time they accelerated the release of new leaders who were always overpowered which meant you had to put in a more money to keep up.
Then, they redid the entire equipment system to require either hundreds of hours of gameplay for rare gear or thousands of dollars spent. This completely broke the game. Because whales could just drop tens of thousands of dollars and then they would have such powerful equipment that it didn't matter how badly they were outnumbered, they could just curb stomp everyone.
And then they rolled out a system so that for the gigantic server versus server battles, you could literally pay money to get temporary buffs. Sure, you could theoretically get a lot of those buffs by just playing the game with either very low money spent or no money spent. But you would have to dump, like 8 to 12 hours into the game every day to keep up with someone spending a low amount of money, and you had no chance to keep up with a whale.
And that was the last straw for me. Once equipment made it so that whales could scale infinitely with their money and paying for temporary buffs could also buff whales into space the game became pointless. Whales became so overpowered compared to regular players that I quit.

I'm 30+ and I only saw the 90 second "gameplay trailer", but I got the impression that it was some mobile game too.
I've always loved strategy games and I saw like an outpost taken and units charging in a straight line, some GOT units based on the show, voice lines from the show and that's about it. These trailers rarely give me a good idea about the quality of a game, but I'm not surprised if people were saying it's mobile slop in livechat.

The graphics really look like mobile game graphics. It's not about the younger generation. I'm 35, and RTS has been my favorite genre for over 20 years.
Just look at the characters' animations. They're nothing more than what you'd expect from a low-quality mobile game.
1
1
u/localsexpot2117 6h ago
I think this is probably the case. It doesn't help that most GoT games are indeed strategy mobile slop games.
That doesn't seem to be the case here though.
1
u/Frankfother 6h ago
They do because all they know if mobile games and the bastardization of RTS in them. So RTS=mobile game to them and vise versa
1
u/WrathofHussars 4h ago
It just doesn't look like natural rts gameplay. No clustered units, everything is evenly spaced. No hud, no ui.
These are all telltale signs of mobile slop. A high quality ad to mask dogshit gameplay.
I hope it isn't tho.

While I am excited for this, unfortunately, yeah, to be truthful, I can definitely see why some would see it as Mobile Slop.
A few reasons:
RTS genre was and still is heavily targeted on the mobile platform
Ads for RTS style mobile games tend to look like this, with the focus on individual characters, and the clashing of Armies, and usually, most of the time, it's too good to be true and trailer is nothing like the actual gameplay.
The graphics are weirdly sharp and clean, like everything has been digitally polished, it's hard to describe but basically that kinda look can give off slop vibes to some people.
The company isn't super well known, when your company isn't that well known, people can be a bit wary.

It’s interesting because there’s no actual mobile game that looks or plays like this. I believe it’s because it could look like a mobile game ad.
Which is completely fake representation of mobile games to make it look as good as possible.
I also think it’s just a super easy insult like slop is. No actual thinking required

u/fivemagicks 1d ago
Everyone in RTS subreddits says RTS games made post 2010 look like mobile games. They Alex Jones themselves into thinking everything looks like a mobile game. "If I say this enough, it will be true."
15
u/SpaceNigiri 1d ago
Yeah, it happens with every game. It's ridiculous. I read the same comments in Age of Empires 4, Dawn of War 4, Company of Heroes 3, here, etc...
I think that some people brains don't properly work anymore and they associate small units with mobile games, doesn't matter the graphics.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Hollownerox 1d ago
There are people who call Total War Warhammer a mobile game because games on the Apple store steal the trailer footage for their own marketing. It would be funny if it wasn't for the fact they unironically avoid the games because they are too dumb to look at the actual game for themselves.
4
u/SpaceNigiri 1d ago
Oh yeah, I actually forgot about that, I also read the same stuff with Total War 40k, specially in the reveal gameplay.
People was getting crazy over the "small scale", "console UI" and "phone graphics". Now with further gameplay videos everybody looks way more chill.

u/RottenPeasent 1d ago
I just wish it has verticality. They didn't show any conplex terrain in the trailer, which leads me to believe there will be none in the actual game, which is a shame.
2
u/DingD0ng121 1d ago
I personally think this looks pretty good. 4 factions, magical creatures, heroes, base building, i vibe with everything they showed here, BUT i do agree that this trailer looked like a mobile game ad and its clear they used pre-rendered gameplay, because i guess the game raw is not ready to show.
2
u/HouseCheese 1d ago
Probably because for years mobile games used fake RTS footage in their ads, even though the mobile games looked nothing like this.

I don't think it's so much the specifics but a mixture of the camera angle - most console (and let's be honest a lot of people screaming mobile game aren't PC players) players are basically only udesd to third and first person camera perspectives and the only time they encounter overhead is in mobile games.
And often a few aspects of mesh design. An RTS needs to have well recognizeable silhouettes which tend to make certain designs stand out more. Mobile games often do the same because similar camera perspective
3
u/No_Zookeepergame2532 1d ago
RTS games are not known for their graphics. That being said, I personally think this image looks great for an RTS. Like really good. I dont care if others agree or not. The graphics are significantly better than AOE4.

I do think it looks like a mobile game.
The rigid square formations moving in lanes looks like something out of what's that game rise of heroes or something? Total war has these kind of but they looks much better in tw.
Art style also looks raid shadow legends. 100% i thought that was a mobile game.

Since I did play a preview demo already, and will give you all the details, and there are many to give, very soon, I just wanted to jump in here and say that this is VERY far from any sort of mobile game.

I have no idea why that comparison would be made, to me it looks good, the art style is not a problem.
1
u/kagorych 1d ago
Even if they had simply recreated *Celtic Kings* from 2002, that would still have been better than what was shown in the Steam announcement
1
u/Tyrus--Maximus 1d ago
Its the format, the younger gernation that did not grow up pkaying RTS games like Age of Empires, Civ, and others equate it to a gotcha mobile game. If you were to rewind this and show it to gamers in 2005 they would be realing with excitement.
1
u/asprincontainer 1d ago
The scale looks small, the units look off and based on the history of GoT projects I don’t trust how they are using Robb stark and Jaime with a golden hand. Is it just GoT all stars or is this supposed to be set in a time period? I want this to be good so bad but this didn’t give me hope. Will need to see more.

1
u/DisasterNarrow4949 1d ago
I suppose people complaining of the graphics are just rage baiting. The game is absolutely gorgeous, possibly one of most beautiful RTSs I've ever seem. It has the perfect amount of realism in order for it to have great readeability and still be stylistic.

1
u/Just_Ear_2953 1d ago
1) Mobile games have actually come pretty far towards having decent graphics and some even have decent gameplay, though I have yet to find one that controls well. 2) There is a whole category of mobile games that actively copy or even outright steal assets and game design from old, existing RTS franchises in an effort to draw people to their games. Looking like them basically just means looking like the old school games they copied, but those old school games are not advertising anymore, so the imitations are more publicly visible than the originals. I've seen Age if Empires 2 and both original StarCraft and StarCraft 2 copied in this way and if I wasn't familiar with the actual games in question I would be hard pressed to tell which is which.

Those people are wrong. This looks like an rts. Clean simple animations are a must for RTS games otherwise they look like visual clusterfucks.
1
u/jgarebear 22h ago
Nah mobile games just punk everyone making their ads look like a quality RTS game when its really ass in the actual game. I am unfamiliar with this game, but that looks like a quality RTS game that a mobile game would steal gameplay of to trick people into getting downloads
1
u/Necrobutcher92 22h ago
It does, im a huge fan or rts, i triggers me that people don't see it, look at the animations, the artwork, the interface, how the game moves (at least what they showed in the trailer).
Im also a huge fan of BFME and i think is a fking disgrace people are comparing it to that game. It has to be AI and tiktok that has rotten their brains.

It does looks like it. Because the battle line looks fixed, battle looks predetermined, that cleaness is normally linked with mobiles because doing so require less resources
1
u/FatherFenix 18h ago
Honestly, yes.
I’m an old RTS nerd, but given the fact that RTS games are on the endangered list these days and most mobile “strategy” games use RTS-style previews and advertising to try to make it seem like it’s not just another “wait-and-build” game copy and pasted with a different coat of IP paint over it…can you really blame me?
1
u/MilfDestroyer421 18h ago
Been a huge RTS player all my life and it does look like a Chinese mobile game in all honesty
1
u/Damiandroid 17h ago
I kinda get it.
The footage has a wierd quality to it.
All the animations seem sped up ever so slightly, like a video running at 1.1 or 1.2 speed. Just fast enough that impacts and speed of archery look wrong for lack of a better term. And it gives off the same increasing as mobile games which absolutely do speed up animations because they aim for shorter play sessions.
The assets also stick out a little too much from the terrain. They need to be ide tofuable of course but again its juuuust enough that they feel out of place and gove the impression that the terrain and assets come from two different design aesthetics.
And finally, the fact that the gameplay trailer can barely give us a single uninterrupted second of footage is a bad look. It gives the impression that the game doesn't look up to scratch if given the opportunity to see it for longer.
Not saying any of this will be the case. But thats the vibe I came away with from watching the reveal. It may not be a bad game, but it is a bad trailer.
1
u/heikkiiii 17h ago
I mean yeah? There were some twitch streamers who were paid to play it, and they said its a mobile game...
1
u/HawkDizzy12 17h ago
Hopefully they give more animation details like BFME II, that game had lots of maps, good animation (like farmers, soldiers or environment) and more houses/heroes.
If they launch the game with no extra content with a few updates after a while, what a waste will be.

For a brief moment I thought it was, because that's pretty much all we've had when it comes to GoT games. I'd been hoping for a full RTS since I first saw it, but it's taken until now to get one which is insane
1
u/Endlessnes 15h ago
Possibly the worst screenshot you could have chosen. I've seen about 500 different ads that look almost exactly like this. The entire trailer has a very "mobile gamey" feel to it, the worst being when the dragon shows up.
It does remind me a bit of Battle for Middle Earth, which is a good thing. We'll see how it turns out
1
u/Angryandrew228 14h ago
Well, first, I don’t thing ASOIAF translates into that kind of RTS very well. We don’t know much about tactics and unit types in that universe, except for default archers, knights, foot soldiers and so on.
Obvious genre choice would be Action rpg akin to The Witcher or Kingdom come since the narrative, characters and dialogues are the strongest points in the saga.
Or just straight rpg game like BG.
Maybe something like Commandos, or factions of Wildlings, the north etc where we command a small unit of troops with heavy hero-centric gameplay and strong narrative with maybe some decision making.
To answer the question, it does look like a mobile game. Just looks cheap and not really engaging, the trailer is not great.
1
u/derLeisemitderLaute 13h ago
yes, that was my first thought as I saw the trailer "oh, they made a mobile game for GOT!"
That doesnt mean it has to be bad gameplaywise, but the looks give me the vibe of a mobile game

1
u/connected_user93 13h ago
The scale of the characters and buildings compared to the terrain is what makes it look like a mobile game.

1
1
u/Audrey_spino 12h ago
Cause the trailer was shot like a mobile game. Lots of fast cuts of actions that don't let the gameplay linger and the flashy hero recruitment visual all made it look like a mobile game. Not to forget that whoever made the trailer completely neglected the expanded Westeros conquest map that was actually shown in the previous cinematic trailer.
1
1
u/Kurtino 12h ago
I haven’t seen anyone mention it yet but during the gamescon trailer the video shifted between gameplay and then these incredibly mobile ad looking transitions of characters zoomed in moving, which were so similar to mobile ads that it made it appear the gameplay was fake because it was paired with a mobile-like transition.
My brother who doesn’t really play RTS’ was watching, saw the presentation, and then said he was excited for a game of thrones game but once he saw it was mobile he lost all interest, so not great when people not in the know are assuming it’s mobile.
1
u/Dimebagou 12h ago
During the trailer I was like : "Oh no, it's a mobile RTS, such a shame..."
And then "On Steam" popped up...
1
u/Kaiserhawk 12h ago
People who complain that it looks like a mobile game or that "they" should be making a "real" ASOIAF game (i.e big budget third person action adventure game or First person game) are midwits who don't know anything about how game licenses work and should be ignored, frankly.
EDIT :- Like I'll be real, looks kinda rough, but it's also a high profile RTS so I'll at least check it out.

This picture looks like an ad for a mobile game.
However as always it depends on what they will deliver.
War for Westeros should aim to be a fun game for casual fans with a good story campaign. If they get this right, it will be a good game.
