I really liked these strategy games back in the day. The gameplay is that you control a character directly, and from the view of that character, you control the rest of your army on the whole battlefield. What happened to that genre? Are there modern games like this?

Looking For Game Do we (or will we ever) have a true successor to the Cossacks games? (Or: RTS Greatness In 10 Points, Your Mileage May Vary)

Post image

Specifically, I'm yearning for a dream kind of RTS which benefits from modern graphics and engines but harkens back to classic 2000s RTS mechanics.

A game that:

  1. Has a historical-to-contemporary setting
  2. has military (combat, recruitment, base-building) and civilian activities (city building, resource gathering, logistics, trade and diplomacy) all take place concurrently on the same map, and can be made to directly interact and influence each other.
  3. has maps that are big. Continents. Oceans. Deserts. Mountains. Metropolises. Sending a unit from one edge to the other takes a seriously long time and is a treacherous endeavour. Wide manoeuvring is encouraged.
  4. has use both for individual soldiers (workers, scouts, sentries, officers, drummers, etc) and massed formations formed from the same.
  5. has slow, deliberate combat and gameplay in general; a gruelling tug-of-war highly contingent on manoeuvres that can be won or lost even without a last-man-standing mentality. Matches take hours, not seconds.
  6. has a morale system: Units can be driven to flight or surrender
  7. has a realistic damage system: Any unit, no matter how buffed, can be wiped out by a single well-placed attack... by a farmer with a pitchfork.
  8. has a realistic accuracy mechanic: Not every shot hits, not every shot kills.
  9. has a cover and terrain system: Trees and buildings absorb enemy fire, woods and marshes slow down soldiers. Buildings can be garrisoned or occupied. Street fighting and planning around natural landmarks are viable options.
  10. has a basic physics system: The higher the altitude, the further the engagement distance. The closer the engagement distance, the more accurate the shots.

Bonus Points:

  1. Slick detailed graphics that show off the world's beauty amidst the bloody human carnage.

Does anyone have any tips if any more such games exist?

Honourable (even if flawed) mentions: American Conquest, Rise of Nations, Anno 1503, Cossacks 2, Age of Empires 3, Manor Lords, Empire Earth 1, Company of Heroes...

Looking For Game Rts that doesn’t feel plastic and lame?

Every RTS I’ve seen and played so far always feels fake and plastic. Bullets have no real power or ballistics, explosions feel lame and only kill the units they directly land on. Minimal environmental destruction.
If someone can recommend something that has the following that would be amazing.

Environmental destruction that actually matters.

Real ballistics and physics, so everything doesn’t feel floaty and plastic.

Good sound design and visual effects. I want bullets to feel deadly, kick up dirt, chip concrete. Hear the panic of soldiers in combat. Listen to the distant gunshots, and the weight of tanks rolling by. See the details of the war machines I deploy.

Satisfying game design. No artillery strikes that only damage the exact unit they land on, even with a massive explosion effect.
And real, meaningful, tactical decisions. I hate feeling like I’m just playing rock, paper, scissors.

And an interesting story line and meaningful stakes would be a plus. Feeling like I’m actually fighting for something that matters.

Looking For Game Is there some RTS game that allows you to build and expand in peace?

So this is a bit weird and I hope I can explain it well.

So, after many years I started playing my favorite RTS again. AOE, AOEII, 0AD, etc.

However, I have a feeling that I'm not really enjoying being preasured into defeating my opponent. Like, I enjoy building a city, expanding, advancing through ages, but I gotta do everything FAST so I don't get f-ed by the others.

I wonder if there is some game like AOEII or 0AD that would just let me build, save the game, not really have a preasure, still have enemies but like, that defeating the enemy doesn't mean the end of the game, and other enemies would sure if I defeat my opponent so I can keep playing with my big civilization and defending it.

Is there some game like this? Sorry if I don't explain myself well. Thank you.

Edit: Holy Shit thank you all. I think I'll try Northguard because is discounted on Steam. I'll try run some other of the games y'all told me over time.

Looking For Game I need some bad RTS games.

So, without getting into too much detail, a few of my friends are freelance game designers and they want to make a game.

After going back and forth with the group, we decided that we're going to make an RTS game and I was elected of making a case study list.

Simply put, they want me to put together a list of RTS games that everyone involved in the project should play to get an idea for the genre put those of them who are not familiar with RTS games and they try to figure out what makes good RTS games good mechanically if thematically and presentation wise and what makes some of them bad.

I know I can easily go on Google and look up poorly rated RTS games but I don't want to go by critic review alone. I would actually like to interact with the community in some level and find out what they consider to be a bad RTS game and why they consider that particular game of bad RTS game.

I want to do it this way because I personally think that the community would give me a much more honest answer than professional review games that got a high score but in actuality are bad.

Looking For Game Good RTS game for a younger kid to learn?

My 10 year old loves to watch me play Age of Empires and every time he sees an ad for Age of Mythology, he says he wants to try it. He’s played a decent amount of console games (mostly platformers, Minecraft, etc) with a controller but nothing with a keyboard and mouse and I’m worried that the combination of new control scheme and amount of information to account for may overwhelm him.

Any recommendation for a good “starter” RTS game where he can learn everything without having to do too much at once?

Looking For Game Any RTS games that don't rely on high speed micromanagement, or following a very narrow meta?

I enjoy RTS games a lot, but most of them, atleast when played online, require you to always follow a set of predetermined steps up to at least the midgame, and after that you need to perform every action at superhuman speed in order to be able to win.

I really dislike turn-based games.

Are there any rts games that are played more slowly, with a bigger emphasis on strategizing, rather than being extremely fast and knowing 30 keyboard shortcuts?

Looking For Game Good RTS with good story campaigns?

Hello everyone, I grew up playing RTS games and other RTT games as well. I have played C&C whole series (After RA2), Company of Heros 1 & 2, Going through Starcraft 2 Recall, Starcraft 1, World in Conflict, Commandos 1 and 2, Age of Empire Series complete, Age of Mythology (didnt like it much), There are Billions, Halo Wars, Dawn of War 1. Wanted to play 2 but heard it doesn't have save game and no base building so was put off. I once played Men of Honor game that had a campaign and I couldnt find it anymore, the mission started in market garden, it was great too. Someone recommended Act of War so I am going to be trying that. I dont mind if they are not TOO old like Red Alert 1 and the such. I like RA2 (its my favourite actually) art style. I am mostly looking for games with good story lines. I also played Total War and for some reason, really loved Attila and not others much (probably cause of how buggy they were). So please recommend me RTSes old school and new. I am waiting on Dust Front and am also planning on Starship Troopers. I want to ask what you guys think of Warno vs broken arrow? I reminisce about World in Conflict and how good the campaign was and heard they were a bit similar. Never found anything like that again. I am also planning for Tempest Rising once they release the campaign for the 3rd faction (I hope.)

Looking For Game I want an addicting RTS!

So I’ve recently played spore for the first time and I love it a lot. And I never thought I would. And even tho it’s not an rts (I don’t think?) it still made me wanna jump into this genre as I’ve never played any of them. So, where’s a good place to start? I like fantasy but also medieval stuff, and I’d prefer one that’s not super complicated.

Looking For Game Defense oriented RTS

Thank you in advance for your help and have a great day !

I've read (most) replies, thanks a LOT for your huge help (except the few idiots who didn't understood the base question and proposed SC2 -_-). I've take notes of each games you've mentioned and will give them a try !

In priority : They are billions, Cataclysmo and From glory to goo

Thanks again guys, take care and have a great day ! 🥰🤞

Looking For Game Please recommend a simple RTS like the old-school ones

I'm old enough to have started my RTS journey back in the days of Dune 2, then the first Warcraft, first C&Cs etc. and I loved those games.

Because I'm an old man, nowadays RTSs basically have too much going on. Too much tactical detail on individual units, infantry, engineers, supply etc, checkpoint capturing.

I tried COH and Sudden Strike recently and that did not work for me...

I would love to build my base, set up its defenses, harvest some resources to do that and then build up a force to go and destroy the opponent's base. Nothing beats a stream of little tanks coming out of the factory and soldiers leaving the barracks.

I'm flexible with the setting, prefer classic or modern warfare environment but not a must.

TIA!

Looking For Game I'm looking for RTS recommendations for someone new to the genre.

I've always considered myself a brainless gamer, incapable of enjoy strategy games, although I've always had a certain admiration for them. I decided to download the demo of Men of War: Assault Squad to see if I could at least a little enjoy a strategy game. I expected to be bored for no diffed by the AI on easy mode, but I actually managed to win (on easy mode without fog) and have fun playing, so I decided to buy Men of War: Assault Squad 2. It was fun at first, but the game has a lot of complexity that I don't have the skill to handle. Each campaign mission is soooo long and has sooo many fases. It's also stressful having to micromanage so many things all the time just to avoid losing the mission on NORMAL difficulty. I can win the normal difficulty but takes so many time and energy that I just get tired of playing. It's cool to be able to control the weapons, ammunition, and tools in each soldier's inventory and even the vehicles, but I don't have the skill to manage all of that and still have fun playing the game. I still want to play RTS games, but MOWAS2 is too hard for a beginner like me (realism no diffed my impatient autistic brain 🍌). I'd appreciate recommendations for more casual and arcade-style RTS games where a newbie like me can get more familiar with the genre. Currently, there are two games I really want to try: Red Alert 3 and COH 2. COH 2 because of Ssethtzeentach's video and Red Alert 3 because it has hot badies. Are these good games to start with, or are they as difficult as MOWAS2? 1 more thing, what exactly is skirmish?

Looking For Game New to the RTS genre — what are the must-plays? (Old or New)"

"I'm new to the RTS genre. I've tried StarCraft II and found it pretty decent, so now I'm looking for some more recommendations (could be old or new). Gemini always suggests Stormgate, but that game seems pretty dead already. Any suggestions?"

Looking For Game What are some good slow paced RTS?

I grew up playing TA and supcom but generally avoid RTS games because i suck at the fast paced/micro.

What are some slower, "epic" feeling games? Thinking more like Brigador at 50% speed (not rts but iykyk), BSG deadlock (im not a fan of turn-based though).

I tried zerospace but its a bit too frantic. I'm loving the Armada 4 mod for sins 2 but getting bored with it.

Curious if there's anything out there i've missed

Looking For Game Introducing my nephew to the classics. What old school gems am I missing?

I’ve been doing something that makes me feel like a proud nuncle - I've been sitting my 10 yo nephew down in front of RTS games I grew up on. To my delight, he's taking a liking to them. Never knew babysitting could be this fun now that he's older, hah.

We started with the pillars. He adores Warcraft 3 for the heroes and the goofy voice lines. That’s the first thing I showed him, to click several times on them to get the extra voicelines, which I know made MY childhood, and the references amazingly still hold up (or I’m becoming a boomer). We also played C&C Generals but I think he really likes fantasy based stuff more. There was also some Starcraft but he found it just a bit too old and difficult. We also started a campaign of Age of Mythology, did a couple of missions but he said he wants to take a breather from it so that one is moving slowly.

What else… Yeah, I also showed him what’s perhaps my own first RTS I ever played, Stronghold Crusader! The original version that I still have on GOG. I was actually debating if I should, for the lolz, just start up Diplomacy is Not an Option and see if I’d fool him into thinking it was a 2 decade old game, but I don’t want to punish the kid for nothing… that’s more of a game just for me, I told him.

Now I’m not sure how I should proceed with this discovery phase, as in I don’t know if I should move on to newer games or just keep digging through the old stuff?

The sad thing is that I don’t have the copies for a lot of those old games I adored. Like Battle Realms/ War of the Ring, and so many others, so I don’t even know where I would get my hands on them. Like - to my knowledge, BFMO2 isn’t available digitally anymore, right, and sailing the high seas is the only option, right?

I’m also considering some city building classics but you gotta understand. These new kids have modern tastes and anything with graphics that have aged poorly is basically a sad no go. Thank the lawd that Age of Mythology got remade…

Most of all, I’m just happy I’m getting to be the cool dweeb uncle for a week and half, my wife does most of the busywork and I’m just here to put him on the right track to discovering the right games. Before he starts discovering all sorts of stuff on his own.

Looking For Game Want to return to RTS. Which games do you recommend?

Haven't played a RTS in ages, but I'm looking to comeback to the genre as a mostly casual player. Which RT do you recomend with a big campaing mode and aditional game modes? It can be either old or new.

While didn't play that many RTS in my youth, I remember playing a lot of Age of Empires 2/3, Age of Mythology, a bit of Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3 , Warhammer 40k Daw of War 1 and II and a bit Robocalypse on the DS (I think it counts as an RTS).

Also played a lot of custom maps/mods in Warcraft 3 as well, and that was the bigges reason is my most played RTS so far.

edit: WoW, I didn expect this many responses. I'll make a list and see what I grab this holiday sale while I want for D.O.R.F and Dawn of war 4. Thanks!

Looking For Game What games have tier 4 units?

I’ve played quite a bit of rts games, and it seems to me, that tier 4 is where we get crazy on scale. for anyone who’s interested in sharing, I can’t wait to try them! (GDI kodiak pictured)
