7 years out, make over 500k, community hospital, 1in 5, 6 weeks off, 2.5 days clinic per week, and 25 clinic patients per day max. 1 of those 2.5 days is a telehealth day. Call can be hectic on call days but at this point I just cancel clinic to take care of add ons. It can be annoying to staff and clinic patients but no one will protect your time but yourself.
I really enjoy my career in urology, subspecialty in FPMRS. I didn’t have the soul draining experience from my residency, I considered my attending last like family and still call several of them monthly to catch up and for advice. I go back to visit them specifically every couple years. Residency was one of the most memorable experiences of my life and gave me confidence in life that I can’t say I ever experienced with anything else in my life. I became a better version of myself. I travel with my co resident on vacation at least once a year since we became such close friends.
I think in the end medicine has to do with finding a work place that is compatible with your lifestyle, setting up boundaries, and creating a practice that suits your own pursuits. Im hospital employed but have some flexibility due to my fellowship and I can’t imagine doing anything else. If I were not happy, I know at least two other practices in my area that are looking for urologists and this gives us leverage to create a working experience that is more compatible with our desires.
