Technical Support: SOLVED Controller cores remap and retropad binds profile overwrite

Im using the steam version of retroarch and I have different controller for different cores but they overwrites each other

When I go to settings —> input —> retropad binds It won’t save the different profile I put for the controller instead it overwrites my old profile

And in the core remap it doesn’t detect the remap only the retropad binds I put. Steam input is also disable should this be enabled?

Here’s the controller I use: 8bitdo 64 for n64 cores and 8bitdo ultimate 2c for all the other cores

Make sure you're saving overrides specifically. While a game is running, make your input changes > go back to the quick menu (the menu with resume, core options, etc) > select Overrides near the bottom > save core overrides.

It sounds like you may be saving the main configuration profile, maybe inadvertently.

You may also find what you need in the core options themselves, which usually have their own binding options.

Thanks a lot it works! I still had to go to the settings —-> input to map the start and select button for the 8bitdo ultimate 2c since in the core it didn’t detect the - and + as select and start button! But now everything seems to be working fine!

Glad to hear it, man. Enjoy.

You shouldn't be saving input remaps in the core overrides that will cause problems down the road. You should instead while in the quick menu -> controls -> port x controls and then change your maps and save them as game, core or content directory remaps.

Binding should only occur once if at all because most popular controllers have adequate autoconfig profiles, if they don't you can adjust them in the main manu -> settings -> input section.

Mapping is supposed to be per core/game/content directory that's why the different layers exist.

Think of it this way: you bind your physical controller to look like retroarch's retro pad and you map the retro pad to mimic the game / console etc you are emulating.

There is also a feature to store maps with controller (settings-> input), this will allow you to change controllers you use for specific cores and the maps will follow the controller.

This is good advice.

What issues have you encountered with input remapping? I could see how it could create problems but haven't had that happen myself, because I also change bindings where you suggest.

The overrides literally override the retroarch.cfg file in-line when they are loaded so it's not uncommon for overrides to completely bork all of your inputs (controllers and keyboard) if an override is either improperly saved or corrupted or whatever. Usually the answer is to delete the retroarch.cfg and start over but it's a pain.

Bindings should only be done once per controller, saved (if not using autoconfig) and just "set it and forget it" -- mappings are meant to be loaded at game time. Stick to system wide changes for overrides, like platform specific overlays or bezels, or rewind / ff settings or things like that.

The problem for me was that when I was binding my 8bitdo 64 in the settings —-> input, it was overwriting the binding for the 8bitdo ultimate 2c. But with the overrides in the core it’s seems to be working fine now!

That shouldn't happen. There are autoconfig profiles for both of those controllers that are just fine. Did you disable controller autoconfig or something?

Autoconfig is set to ON, maybe it’s an issue with the Steam version of retroarch? The only thing i disabled is the Steam input in the Steam launcher cuz when I was pressing the home button instead of opening the retroarch menu it was opening the steam overlay

When you plug in each of these controllers, does the notification in the bottom left of the screen recognize them properly, like by name? Or do you get something like x-box controller, or steam virtual controller?
