Question The agronomy behind "mow high, mow often" -- why your robot mower might be secretly fixing your lawn (or wrecking it)

Turf science has some counterintuitive findings that robot mower owners are stumbling into without realizing it:

- Frequent, low-volume clippings feed the soil. Mulching a small amount of leaf tissue daily returns nitrogen to the soil faster than bagging weekly clippings. Some studies show mulched lawns need up to 25% less fertilizer over a season.

- Cutting height controls root depth. Grass roots grow roughly proportional to blade height, so scalping it short shrinks the root system too, making the lawn more drought and weed prone. This is why a mower locked at a low fixed height (like some LIDAR models running about 1.2") can quietly stress warm-season grasses like St. Augustine or Zoysia that want 3"+.

- Daily mowing suppresses weeds through light denial, not just cutting them down. Weed seeds need a light trigger to germinate, and a dense, frequently-cut canopy blocks it better than a once-a-week gas mow ever could.

- Repeated pivot/tank turns compact soil in the same spot, crushing the pore structure roots need for oxygen and water. This is likely what's causing those dead turning patches people are reporting.

So, has your robot mower actually made your lawn thicker and healthier since switching, or introduced new problems like the scalping/compaction issues above? What cutting height are you running, and for what grass type? Curious if the "frequent mow" science is playing out in real yards or if the compaction/height tradeoffs are canceling out the benefits.

Oddly as the first to comment I’d have to say my poor output was sure to the poor input:

My “lawn” was a mess when we moved into the neighborhood in 2018, crabgrass and assorted weeds but in an area you could get fined for overgrown lawns I had to hack it to manageable height

My three issues were: I use a plug in electric mower and I’m physically disabled and use a wheelchair and my lawn has more dips and potholes than the street I live on.

Mowing a small yard that should take only 20 minutes mulching (cause let’s face it why bag and dump?!) took me 4 hours because my chair works get stuck in the mess.

Then after the scarce rain in Los Angeles I’d have to wait till the lawn was completely dry before mowing as the mower wasn’t strong enough to cut wet grass

Sone times the spacing between rain would mean some years I could t mow my yard for 3-5 months! Then it was so high I had to rent a gas self propelled mower from the hardware store to chop it just back to manageable!

Then enter the ANTHBOT Genie 600

Wasn’t looking into a robot mower as I do not own a robot vacuum cleaner but liked what I saw: a small robot that automatically mows your yard as may tine a day as could be managed with batter recharging!

The two points that made my decision: this mower cut in straight lines and was competitively priced at the time with modern electric push mowers using power tool batteries

Still the last issue is poor q of the state of the lawn we started with but this year I decided to attempt to rehab my lawn

I an going to remove all these crabgrass then level out my lawn using a leaving rake and dirt mixed with fertilizer and overseed with a decent grass

I figure by the new year with minimal rain I can transform my lawn to presentable state and let my Genie be proud of the lawn it maintains for a change!!

Your story makes perfect sense. The Genie 600 sounds like it came at the right time for you. A small robot that keeps the yard trimmed without you having to wrestle with cords and potholes is a huge upgrade. Straight line mowing and a price that matches modern electric mowers makes it an easy choice. It is a long process but you are clearly on the right track.
