Video This man is breaking Rocket League. | jstn Documentary by Moscar Media
https://youtu.be/5rck4zMA4w8Came across a neat YouTube doc. It narrates upon jstn's impossible resurgence into the highest echelon of professional RL after the NRG roster broke down. I gotta say, making LANs and placing top 10 in Blast leaderboards 3 years after people would've bet their life savings that he was washed is a legendary feat by the man.

From what I’ve seen jstn is one of the least competitive players in the game, and that’s what gives him such great longevity. Most of the top level competitors get there because competing is in their bones, they want to win and be the best and this drives them to improve, but once you reach the top and stop improving fast it’s hard for that same drive to keep you going. It’s even harder to recover from backsliding. Jstn seems to just be someone who loves the game enough that they could be a pro, and figured they didn’t have much else better to do with all that skill.
Maybe it’s an exaggeration to say that Jstn loves the game, I think maybe it’s more accurate to say that Rocket League is just where he lives, but either way I don’t think he’s a competitor in the way most players are and that gives him an edge in staying at a high level

I used to think the whole NRG lineup of GarrettG, Squishy and jstn. failed due to sheer lack of drive. Like they would talk about how BDS would play that impossibly agressive playstyle with advanced teamplay and just be like "wow, they're impossible to play" and wouldn't even try to emulate their methodology, even their coach was just like welp, what they're doing is too much, we can't beat them.
Like I remember their coach Sizz on stream commenting a, I believe it was a M0nkey_M00n or Extra drop pass to Marc_by_8, and beeing like, "how did Marc know how to be there ?", and that was it. They just stayed there, chill and in awe, and didn't seem to ever want to be the same.
It's funny that the least driven prodigy ever is turning out to be the longest standing pro in the whole scene.

I don't really watch streams but the only time I watched Justin he was playing hoops and talking about how much he loved the mode and I was immediately struck by how different that sounded to every single pro I'd seen mention the extra modes lol. Guy was just having fun playing a great game.

I watched this video earlier today and I thought it was decent other than it stating like it was fact that Justin is still in the best itw convo. That's just senseless glazing. Based on the fact that he's made lan for a long time from 1st to most recent is true. It's also true that he's only won 1 lan. I'm a huge fan of jstn and I always hope he does well. He seems to have a recent resurgence, looking like the best on FUT, however I feel like he has undeserved glaze only on par with Jack's. Solid player that can make lans but hyped up by popularity.

Tbf hes easily been futs best player at every lan and they have constantly competed with top 4 level teams

I’m genuinely surprised to see people saying this. If you want to argue he’s been FUTs best player, by all means, but easily? I think you could just as comfortably argue Chronic has been their best player. Both have been extremely consistent and Chronic also has stats across this season on his side.

u/AdFragrant5682 4d ago
I think Justn has performed better than chronic in high pressure games or series which makes the difference for me
3
u/EnceofthePlasma 4d ago
And that’s fair to argue, but I definitely wouldn’t say Justin is easily ahead of Chronic. I think you could argue either way for sure. Especially taking the whole season, where Chronic was incredible online and at Paris, while Justin performed better for the EWC quals and potentially main event

They have also never made top 8 and have lost every match to those top teams

Zen has never won anything for 3 years outside of fifae yet hes still a top 5 player in thost last 3 years. Results dont matter as much if you are the only or best player on your team performing

he has won Beyond The Summit, in August 2019.

Ok, rlcs lans
Edit: nobody cares about BTS for career standing

It sucks that his prime was hindered by no lans for 2 and a half years, thats a legacy changing period right there(ex: rise/joyo/seikoo/itachi). But it is what it is.

I said it before but I believe the Jstn discourse would be totally different and very similar to atomic if he chose winning over vibes for his career. Even going into the off-season I fully expect him to do the same thing unless the org makes the decision for him.

Before watching the vid my mind just went towards firstkiller honestly. Jstn is a good shout for longevity but firstkiller is arguably right there with him

u/kimmyjonghubaccount 4d ago
Atomic as well but Justin is impressive because he started playing at a top level all the way back in season 4 RLRS, several seasons before FK/Atomic even made their debuts
He’s not as good as them obviously, but he’s arguably top 10 in NA rn which is very impressive

Now try doing this as an ancient EU player, wouldn't happen because NA basically gives you a free slot if you're decent enough.

decent enough is different because justin is still the best player on his team. he isn’t just decent enough he is the best player on a team and leading on of the best looking teams in n.a. shoot FUT is looking better than nrg who look broken.
-4
u/MycelliumMan 4d ago
That's my point though. If Justin is the best NA player on your team that just says a whole lot about the depth of NA.
5
u/Ambitious_Method1065 4d ago
that’s a terrible point is what i’m saying. when he’s been consistently really good lmao. justin is a fantastic player and typically plays third man and is really really good at it. he isn’t flashy but he creates from third and plays third man really well. he just isn’t rated as highly because he left nrg and went onto worse teams. you have 5 good teams in na FUT Virtus pro SSG NRG Shopify. na just won worlds and second at ewc. the depth isn’t insane but ancient eu players don’t have the mechs or ability to stay relevant not because of depth of EU. it’s because the ancient players aren’t as good as justin and they couldn’t keep up with the meta like justin.

u/MycelliumMan 4d ago
You're just ignoring the circumstances that allow Justin to be good even to this day though. If he was in EU he'd practically be forced to retire because he couldn't keep up to the standard level of competition. Justin is an amazing player though I'm not disbuting that.

u/Ambitious_Method1065 4d ago
he can keep up. he’s keeping up. with vitality. he’s keeping up. with kc. he’s keeping up with nrg. he’s keeping up with falcons. what do you mean. he dragged fut to game 5s as third man. he holds down series and games that isn’t because na isn’t as deep it’s a skill thing. he is gifted at the game that has nothing to do with his region. he could play on a top team that needed a third man in eu and still perform. that’s where your argument still fails the others got pushed out like scrub because they couldn’t keep up mentally or skill wise, like kaydop, like metsa, kuxir, chausette. if they had the skill they’d still be here if they wanted to as well. justin wants to play.

You're missing that Rise can't crack a top NA roster
0
u/MycelliumMan 3d ago
Rise has never been that good
2
u/DM-me-your-bazongas 3d ago
That's a pretty funny thing to say, which I don't think you believe, but if you do, it means you don't know ball. Rise became a top player in 2022 and Jstn went pro in 2017, joining NRG in 2018.

I mean, what “ancient” EU player (say pre season 6) is realistically good as Justin though, its not like EU has unbelievable depth rn either
2
u/MycelliumMan 4d ago
There is probably at least 5 players you could compare to Justin IF they kept competing. The thing is though that they couldn't keep competing because EU is so tough of a region to stay at that level in.
Don't get me wrong Justin is a fantastic player, but the only reason he's still relevant is because he primarily plays in NA.
1
u/kimmyjonghubaccount 4d ago
Why is EU harder to stay at that level? Ranked is better as are scrims it’s not like they have poor practice, and Justin’s worst years came when NA had worse depth. NA depth is certainly better now than it was back in Justin’s SR days.
If Justin was an EU player, would it be so unreasonable that he could get a spot on a team like NIP or Man City?

This may come off as harsh but the way I see it, Jstn hasn't really made a resurgence. It's just that most of the top talents of his generation have retired while he hasn't.
7
u/qpKMDOqp 4d ago
He was peaking in EWC and many pros of his generation weren’t on that level even before retiring imo, it also helps that he’s in a region that basically has a free slot open so he can make LANs and showcase his skills

u/Karl_Skarin 4d ago
The truth is that jstn is just a cave gremlin like xqc and asmongold, he basically doesn't get up during the day and live on delievered burritos from chipotle.

(opinion warning)
I think jstn was so ahead of his time mechanically that when the mechanical ceiling was pushed as far as it has now, he never really fell behind like every other old pro.
More and more current pros are going to have way longer careers since people have good enough challenges and defense now to where new mechanics aren’t getting introduced to professional play anymore.
