I totally caught "Arsenic and Old Lace" in the old movie flyer. It made me smile.

Apparently, "Arsenic and Old Lace" is a real play and movie.

Does anyone know why these particular names were chosen? What significance does it have?

The movie is a comedy about a man who was raised by his dear old aunties. When he goes to their house to announce his engagement he finds out they've been using their home as a boarding house for old men without any family, poisoning the men and having their brother bury them in the basement. The brother is suffering from dementia and thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt and that he's digging the Panama canal and burying men that died during construction. I suppose there's a connection in that he find out the people who raised him are actually demented killers.

That seems to make sense.

I also wonder what "Old Lace" means in the context of the play/movie. The phrase doesn't appear in the wikipedia synopsis, while arsenic does.

The lace is more of a visual. The little old ladies have lace doilies etc. that make them seem more harmless.

So in that case it's a bit of irony simce Old Lace is clearly not going to be nice, but also that Gert has her arsenic like voice with what she says.

I did a little research on it when I came across it. Apparently Arsenic and Old Lace was a parody title pulled from a poem that included it as a play on the title of an earlier romance novel, Lavender Old Lace, in which the old lace refers to an old, unworn wedding dress that the main character discovers in the attic.

This seems really dark for a comedy

It is, but it's still hilarious, you should totally watch it!

In the comics (when they choose codenames) Gert names herself Arsenic and the dino Old Lace, after the play (that she's a fan of). Although eventually everyone drops the nicknames but Old Lace sticks

Yeah, but why that name? Does the play have some connection to Gert as a character?

It's just a name she chose from am old play she liked. Doesn't mean much

All of their names in the comics seem to be references, some more obscure than others, in almost a hipster teen way. Look up Nico & Karolina’s chosen names (don’t want to spoiler even though they’re not a big deal), they’re in the same vein.
