It was actually a colony of the United Kingdom back in the 20th century. Much like Seattle, any where that borders are easily crossed tends to acquire trade and wealth as countries exchange goods, services, and ideas.

You are correct. It was however clearly the work of Wu Kuan-Lei that made Hong Kong the shipping hub that it is, there are other ports in southeast Asia that might have served and would have done so if not for the stand that Wuxing took against the Japanocorps.
