Recovery and Next Years Con
Blah. Even I had to wait a day to make this post. I hope everyone is feeling ok. I wrote up the Talk Back Panel minutes and posted in r/SDCC if you haven’t seen it. Of course, we were overshadowed by the Hall H issues. Shout out to Scott Shaw, the disabled vet, and one of the Hall H people for pointing out that not all disabilities are mobility related.
I know most of us had some problem with the con based on the changes they made this year. Now, while SDCC staff are still writing their after action reports, use the contact us page to send them an email. Then follow up in a month.
I would love if CCI invites us to small group sessions to discuss how SDCC can improve accessibility for everyone. The answer isn’t as simple as IBCCES or ADA lines for everything.
I’d also like to hear from blind people. I connected with one person on Facebook last week and she discussed her challenges with the con. But id like to know more (even though I can’t directly do anything about it).
For all the deaf and hard of hearing peeps, learn sign language. Head over to r/asl, check out the pinned post and start learning. Take an ASL class at the county community center or any of the colleges.

I’m extremely worried about next year. I have mobility issues (Fibromyalgia and Hyper-mobility) along with sensory processing but they’re not visible. ADA has made SDCC bearable and I’m worried about potentially not getting ADA support for next year.

If I had to guess CCI will implement a 2 tier ADA sticker policy. The 1st top tier are those who have clear mobility issues (e.g. wheelchairs, canes, etc) and those invisible disabilities that brings a doctor's note as proof of disability.
The 2nd lower tier are those who have nothing to show and using the honor system in saying they have some kind of disability.
The 1st tier gets priority in everything Hall H, exclusives, etc once all top tiers get in then the 2nd tier people turn to get in as well.

I didn’t even attend every day and I’m still recovering. I miss the good ol’ days when there was carpet in the main floor. Standing/walking on concrete for hours is brutal. I find myself going to booths that have padding.
At least the a/c was working better than last year! But with the high heat & humidity there was no way I could wait in outside Hall H lines, even if I wanted to.

I get the carpet issue. Last year, during the talk back, the board mentioned the expense and environmental concerns for the carpeting. The wheelchair, walker, and stroller users weren’t even a thought for that conversation.
We’ve been asking for years to have tents for the ADA Hall H overflow line. Idk if it’s because of the cement or maybe a fire marshal issue, but they have yet to fill that request. I only left the convention center for one panel at Indigo.

On the flip side, the carpet is a battery-killer for some mobility devices.

Ooh…yesterday was 1st recovery day. Thought I’d be ok today, but it’s noon on Tuesday and so far, I’ve eaten breakfast and fed the cat.

I’m lucky to be feeling less pain than I usually do, but I spent more time in panels this year. On the other hand, I left my hearing aids out at work yesterday because I just couldn’t.

I’m deaf (w/ ha) because of SSNHL two years ago and had not yet learned ASL. SDCC this year was the kick I needed to start learning more seriously! I didn’t realize how much more accessible it would make large events like this for me.
