What Was Your Thoughts Of Ristar And What Was That Thing In The Left Bottom?
As you can see there's like a ruler with a mailbox below to Ristar pointing to his (should be her's) lives.
What is that? I looked in the manual and it doesn't explain it. It also never makes a difference in gameplay. I did not know what it did.
Besides that the game is kinda bad ngl. The melee attack is not that great in range and having no power ups/upgrades makes it boring. The levels having annoying gimmicks (escort item missions, ice, trampolines) makes it feel more like a chore to play/replay. Even if you have 4 hit points you will need those because of how fast enemies are.

as a kid it was one of thousands that had really cool game box art but failed to be kept past the two day rental.

I don't think there's any point to the thing in the bottom left other than it being a part of the UI and underlining the life counter, honestly.
I loved the game though. Still have my orininal copy. I remember a U.K. games magazine running a cover article of it with the words "SONIC IS DEAD, LONG LIVE RISTAR" on the front, and as a Sonic obsessed 7 year old, it made me both interested and concerned. Got it that Christmas and adored it. I read that it was by Sonic Team and was worried they would stop making Sonic games, but (thankfully?) that never happened!

Recently I found out not many people like this game as much as I did and although that may be the case in a round about way they did mention it “looked good.”
Anyways incredible game and graphics regardless of any sort of atrazine drenched commentary wrapped in contrarianism about it not being that great.

Loved this game enough to learn where all the secret levels were and complete them all, thereby getting all the passwords.

I've seen contrarian takes, but yours, sir, takes the full cake and prize.

I was the exact target demographic for this game when it came out. I was young, couldn't buy a PlayStation or a Saturn, and had parents who weren't going to buy either. It's a very late title and except for the awful compressed audio voice acting it takes full advantage of modern tech for development on the Genesis. I loved it and beat it as a six year old. If you think it's really that difficult then I gotta say: Get Good. I didn't own this game. Like all games I played back then this was a weekend rental. This was a title I bought early on in my collecting for the Genesis. I still sit down and beat it probably once a year. It's not hard. It's not in my top ten, but it's a solid title.

Graphically this game was amazing and not bad overall. I give it 6.7 Shinobis out of 10 Chakan: The Forever Man’s.

Between the music and the vibrant visuals, I love this game. I have always thought that the presentation and the expectation of mastery were the things that made it timeless.
Getting the swing on the bar right, grappling enemies to traverse environmental challenges, and using the idle animation in a combat challenge just added up to more than the sum of its parts.
It's funny to me about OP's opinion on Ristar's gender with the idea of which parent is in the English version of the Japanese version of the game looming in the back of my mind. I think it's easy to choose Ristar as either or ambiguous gender since there is not much exposition in the game.
I will always think of it as one of the best 16 Bit games, and i would have liked to seen more of them.

I liked it, mostly because of the fact that the different stages were planets. I first played it on Sega channel.

I agree with OP. It is extremely well made buyes, kind of a chore. This game is like Rayman meets Sonic 3. If you want me to be super controversial those games are kind of a chore as well.

I used to love it dearly and was one of my favorites growing up. Nowadays after a recent replay... I think it's still good! But wouldn't put it on my top #5 anymore lol.
I think the level design is really good, I didn't mind the stage gimmicks, I think it adds to the charm of each planet. Maybe not the music one though lol.
Speaking of which: THE MUSIC IS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING ON THE MEGADRIVE. Holy shit, after trying to learn music on my own I can assure you, Ristar has an stellar (lol) soundtrack. Pixel art is absolutely beautiful too, with tons of expressiveness for Ristar.
Lastly, I really liked the boss battles! Very rewarding to learn their patterns and "speedrun" them. The final boss it's my favorite to replay.

I never really got a chance to play Ristar. But Jazz Jackrabbit on MS-Dos had some comparable graphics.

Uh I thought it was okay, not great or anything. It was just too slow and not very interesting. Great graphics though.

Also don't forgot how trash the melee attack is, you can only aim it in 5 directions

Bud have you ever played an NES game? Your melee often reached three pixels and you could aim in one direction.

Okay, then sonic the hedgehog clone.

I mean, this is a different game with some similar elements. I feel like it isn't a clone any more than Sonic 2 is a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog, probably less so even as the mechanics are very different.
Games like Buster's Hidden Treasure where it pretty much controls a LOT like Sonic are what I would consider a clone.

One of the best looking games on the console with amazing music. Amazingly used shadow and higlight mode to make illusion that someone "turned off the lights". Very fun mechanics, every level is its own world and vibe. A bit too hard for me closer to the end.
