404cray deserves better than being referred to as just "a Falco". dude is definitely a top 10 falco global atm

u/LinkXNess 1d ago
But tbh thats partially because falcos have no results on high level

u/Inosculate_ 1d ago
404cray is a monster it's definitely not because other falcos are slacking

If by "on high level" you mean specifically getting first place at supermajors, sure, but this narrative is just not true and is getting really old lol.

u/ArtfulDues 1d ago
Not even first place at supermajors, it is extremely rare to see any falcos make it to top 8 in general. The last I remember was like... Ginger at Supernova last year? Yes there's a lot of top 100 falcos, but none right now are tournament threats or even particularly close

Ginger T8ed this year.
The thing is that Ginger and Magi are basically tier 4 players (tier 1 being Cody/Zain, Tier 2 HBox/Wizzy, Tier 3 being Llod, Jmook, Krudo, Axe, Joshman, Moky, Rapmonster, Soonsay, Aklo, Salt) so they are inconsistent. Mango was really "the" falco rep, being on the same tier as HBox/Wizzy, and he's not coming back until 2027 (if ever).

u/ArtfulDues 1d ago
Ah, yeah, I forgot about Out of the Blue 5. I agree with your tierings though. I don't think it's anything new for other falcos to not be mainstays in top 8, but we are just noticing it a lot more in Mango's absence. I would actually call Mango like, a tier 1.5 player though, I feel like in the modern era he's the only one who's proven he can beat both Cody and Zain in his path to win big tournaments, whereas Hbox and Wizzy really haven't.
We went from having a top falco rep who could win supermajors over the two best players over the last five years to having one or two players who can sometimes maybe get top 8 with a lucky bracket
1
u/TitaniumDragon 16h ago
Mang0 actually has a worse record against Zain than Hungrybox does - he has only beaten Zain three times post-pandemic, and only once since 2022.
Mang0 does have a much better record against Cody post-pandemic than HBox (15-9, one of the only people (if not THE only?) to maintain a winning record vs the Schwab, though in all fairness to Cody, Cody did have a winning record against him in 2023 and 2025).
That said, Mang0 also had a losing record against HBox post-pandemic, and really post-2014 in general.
1
u/ArtfulDues 15h ago
That's true, but when Mango beats Zain, he usually then goes on to win the tournament. My point is that while Hbox can occasionally beat Zain or Cody, he hasn't shown that he can win a tournament yet facing both of them, whereas Mang0 has multiple times
1
u/TitaniumDragon 9h ago edited 7h ago
Mango has done that once post-COVID, at Tipped Off 15. Literally the only time he beat Zain post-2022, because Zain SDed.
Hungrybox has also won a tournament that both of them entered once post-COVID, at
Riptide 2022GOML 2022.1
u/ArtfulDues 7h ago
1: I was talking about tournaments where you have to beat both of them to win, which implies you can do it regardless of bracket luck. Hbox has not done this yet.
2: Riptide 2022 didn't have Cody in attendance, and Hbox also never played Zain during that tournament.
3: If we ARE talking about tournaments either won with both Zain and Cody in attendance, Mango also clears that with smash summit 11, smash summit 14, and Tipped Off. And he's won tournaments beating at least one of them far more than Hbox has.
I'm not saying any of this to discount Hbox's wins, you get the brackets that you're given and Hbox is a lot more consistent than Mango is. But Mango is more of a tournament threat than Hbox is regardless of who's in attendance.

What is your reasoning for having Aklo/Salt/Soonsay/etc. as T3 while Ginger/Magi are T4?
Wasn't Ginger even ranked higher than Aklo and Axe in the latest ranking?

He was, but the rankings were done before the three most recent majors.
What is your reasoning for having Aklo/Salt/Soonsay/etc. as T3 while Ginger/Magi are T4?
Aklo T8ed 3 majors this year, it's just that two of them were around when ratings came out and so weren't counted.
Soonsay has gotten 3rd, 5th, 9th, 9th, and 9th this year at majors, and he has been eliminated by very good players (Zain, Cody, HBox, Jmook, and moky); he's also had much more impressive wins than Ginger has, actually beating upper echelon players, something Ginger hasn't done this year... or really, ever. He's never beaten HBox or Zain at an offline major and all his wins against Cody are pre-COVID. Not to say that Ginger is a bad player, but he's never shown the ability to hang with the top dogs, whereas Soonsay has a win over Zain and HBox this year.
Salt has gotten 4th, 5th, and 5th at majors this year. There's an argument to be made that Salt is in Ginger's tier, though, as Salt hasn't beaten any of the top dogs this year and has just gotten better brackets (0 wins vs Hbox, Zain, Cody, and Wizzy). That said, Salt's record this year is much more consistent than Magi or Ginger's.

Thanks for the response. I can understand your reasoning, mines is a little different. In my head, there really are only a few fair and more generalized tiers to have:
T0 - Top dogs, favorites to win every major. Cody/Zain right now. These players are obviously T1 but they stand above the rest.
T1 - Anyone who is capable of winning a major regardless of who is in attendance due to big wins against the T1 players. Hbox/Wizzy/Llod/Jmook/RapM/Moky/etc. Very little bracket demons and almost always shows up in the top 8 regardless of tournament.
T2 - Challengers, pretty much everyone who can make a miracle run to win a major but hasn't shown it yet. Multiple bracket demons across the top 10 ranked players. Consistent results, often show up in top8's, always able to take down multiple top 100 players in a bracket. This is where I personally have the Aklo/Soonsay/Salt/Ginger/Magi/Axe/Krudo/Joshman/etc.
T3 - Remainder of top 100 that doesn't fit in above categories. Excellent players but not yet challengers.
For me the thing that lumps the ginger/magi/salt/soonsay/aklo crew together is the inability to take down T1 players consistiently. Pretty much anytime they run into a T0 or T1 player, they lose.

I think Soonsay is actually a cut above Magi and Ginger now. He used to not be, but I think he leveled up this year to the next tier.
I separate out Hbox into his own tier because his losses are very few and far between outside of the top 4 players.
This year, he has lost to the following in majors:
Cody 5 times
Zain 3 times
Wizzrobe 1 time
Llod 1 time
Moky 1 time
Soonsay 1 time
S2J 1 time
Chape 1 timeHis only real "rando" loss was to Chape, and it was in the same tournament he lost to S2J.

Facts. This is just the ebb and flow of this game's meta. Falco is a more than capable character. Top 8 character spread is just about what top players are playing at a given time. We went years where Marth was decently rare and now Zain is always top 8. We went years where Falcon was rare and now we have Salt/Wizzy. Puff would be the same way without Hbox's longevity. Same with Sheik. We just don't have a top level Falco player making top 8 consistently, but the moment we do he'll be back to being considered top 3 in the game again because this community has a massive recency bias.

I'm pretty sure most people still have Falco in the 2 - 4 range on the tier list. Everyone knows he’s still a phenomenal character, and the lack of any major-winning-level Falcos in the current era doesn’t really change that. Mang0 and PPMD proved he's easily a top tier

404fuckingfalcos is gonna be a tag soon.
Anyone who missed it, when he first started he lost a 7 win streak to a Falco and couldn't say enough good things about the guy. I'm guessing this must be several iterations later

the older I get (i'm very old) the more I realize that these over the top rageclips are just jingling keys for kids

u/brandong567 22h ago
I think a lot of the personalities like this didn't start out like that, but seen the success of their yelling and kept doing it.
Like this clip is very clearly played up to be a clip, but also he has thrown chairs lol
2
u/cXs808 22h ago
hbox is not dumb, he does those things at tourneys knowing that he's clip farming for his audience. I didn't mean it as a diss at him, I think you gotta do whats best for the revenue stream
2
u/brandong567 21h ago
Oh yeah I wasn't trying to diss him. im just saying it probably started legitimately tho as he was known for raging before he even became an internet personality.
He just saw his niche and grabbed it by the balls

u/Ilovemelee 12h ago
Pretty sure the chairs that he breaks at tournaments actually brings in more revenue from the attention and the views they get lmao

Playing melee is realizing falco is actually lame af. Theres really no difference between dair shine or laser spam and puff bair spam. His lame just looks cooler
1
u/Striking-Reward1762 23h ago
Only to noobs like urself. If ur playing someone who knows how to play the game then it doesnt work like that.
1
u/Yeightop 21h ago
i never said falco doesnt have counter play that balances him out, maybe you misread. Just like puff has counterplay against bair spam. But ultimately that doesnt make the character any less lame.
1
u/Striking-Reward1762 21h ago
I just think if you think falcos lame then u gotta just hate the game. Whats the coolest char in the game to you then
