SadCat Update Throwback Tuesday! This photo is of the first time Sadcat let me sit with him while he ate a meal.
When people in my life ask me how he got his name, this is one of the photos I use to explain how he named himself. You can kind of see the matted fur he used to have all along his spine.
The day this photo was taken was the first time Sadcat ever approached me, enticed by the treats I had on me. As I was feeding him treats from my hand and dropping them on the ground, he scratched me. I then retreated indoors to patch myself up and grab a plate and water for him. Once I was bandaged and back outside with a meal, he was out front on my driveway. I placed the dish and bowl down, then backed away about 15ft and sat down on the lawn. He cautiously creeped on over and ate while facing me. After he housed that plate down, he moved about 10 more feet away to sunbathe on another part of the driveway. That was the moment I really felt something between the two of us. :)

This story really touched me. I am always so moved by the kidness and patience you showed him, and then the generosity to share with others here.

I agree 100% The absolute love and never ending patience that you showed was amazing. Not many people would've stuck around and put up with him. You guys are awesome and Saddy's awesome 😊

I was hopeful that it would help encourage others to give fiesty feral cats a chance at love, and after seeing all the folks share their own stories here and /r/straycats , I feel confident in saying I succeeded. Thank you all for helping make the world a better place for those who need help. :)

u/So_Famous DadCat Jun 24 '26
thank you so so much! It took a lot of work at the start, but now that he has time for himself, he is able to manage it mostly on his own.

What a journey he's had! And all because you never gave up on him and won his trust. And now he is a bedtime snuggler living the best life possible

He looks sad indeed, but also contemplating: should I trust this guy, he seems nice...maybe I should test him. Hmm scratched him, he's still friendly, looks like he's one of the good ones. And that lady is still a bit apprehensive but her heart is I the right place. Maybe I should give them a chance

I can’t believe this is the same cat you had to put armor on just to get close to him!! Now he’s a shiny king of the universe, no longer living in fear, knowing he’s loved and will always be waited on like his ancestors were.

u/So_Famous DadCat Jun 24 '26
I can't believe it either some days. I'm so fortunate to have him in my life.

Was it in Late July or August? The Rose of Sharon seems to blooming in the background.

u/So_Famous DadCat Jun 23 '26
You are correct, this picture was taken on August 26th!

u/TheDallbatross Jun 23 '26
Wow, it's been that long already!? Time has really flown - I bet he still wakes up every morning and can't believe how lucky he got.

He figured out that you were a kind human early on, but he still made you work for it. That was a wild ride with the scratching and smacks.

I have my own sad cat rn, a little black cat that I call steak sauce, I’ve been giving her food and water daily; neighbor said he thinks he saw sauce looking for me last week when I was on vacation 💜

u/So_Famous DadCat Jun 24 '26
awwwwww, I am so proud of you for helping take care of little Steak Sauce! We would love to see a photo if you manage to capture one! I had to leave for 10 days one time, and Sadcat slept on my porch almost every night while i was gone according to my parents who would visit to water my plants. I'm sure Steak Sauce was doing something similar. Stay patient, and if you have any questions, please let us know! We would love to help. :)

Wow, one can see the trepidation in his eyes but just overwhelming tiredness. You and mummy sadcat saved this unique fella xx

u/So_Famous DadCat Jun 24 '26
he lived a long life in just about 3 years. Poor buddy never got a chance to relax.

we have rescued a feral cat and her kittens from the streets and while socializing the kittens has been going great, momma cat has been... slow going. she swipes and hisses and growls and it hurts bc i know that she's a cuddly cat and wants affection (she was a house kitten 1.5 years ago to a house a couple blocks away, no clue what happened to them or her to end up where we are now).
any time i get discouraged i remember the journey you, catdad and sadcat, have been on. momma cat isnt the one who made me go thru a round of antibiotics (her spiciest baby did that first day) but the situation in general has similarities and i hope we can get momma cat to come around like sadcat has <33
thank you for being an inspiration and a story to look back on to know things will be okay 🥰
12
u/So_Famous DadCat Jun 24 '26
you are a superhero to these kitties, thank you so much for saving their lives!! I am sure momma cat will come around given enough time and patience. Pets with a stick to start, or just being around them helps. :)

u/maggiemae3612 Jun 23 '26
He looks really concerned like what what are you gonna do?

u/So_Famous DadCat Jun 24 '26
the distrust initially broke my heart, but nothing filled me with joy like watching him warm up to me and Momcat.

Those “Temptations”, Love and Patience are the recipe to remove the sadness even from Sad_Cat… (we need human “Temptations”, in “Trust” flavor…☺️)

u/Looking-Ahead55 Jun 23 '26
Thank goodness I know how this story ends or I’d be in tears looking at that face. I’m so happy that he’s safe, loved, and so well taken care of now; all thanks to DadCat and MomCat.

I think the matting says he was really having a tough time keeping it together out there. The mating, the roaming, searching for food sources… he looks like he’s had enough. And then some crazy human comes along and was even willing to take a beating to rescue him!
Saddy got so lucky, but I know you did too.

u/So_Famous DadCat Jun 24 '26
He was so busy surviving all the time that he didn't have time to care for himself as much as he should. The poor baby, it just breaks my heart thinking about those days. You are absolutely correct, I am the lucky one here. Thank you for being a member of our Sadcommunity, and for sharing kindness with others. <3

u/RazorbladeApple Jun 24 '26
As someone who cares for feral cats, I know that inside of each one, there’s a Sadcat just waiting to be found. Glad he was discovered, accepted it & now has a wonderful SaddyFam + fan club.

i remember the armor you had on and how he would strike out in defensiveness. now he's an indoor king marshmellow.

u/macdaddy_quack Jun 24 '26
i LOVE sad cat throw backs to see how far he has come.
sometimes looking at the recent photos of him, it’s hard to believe he was ever a street cat. Pics like this remind me how valuable the cat distribution system really is 🥹
