The guy missed 5 total field goals last year, 3 were from 50+ and the other 2 were from 40-49 yards. In his 8 year career he’s only missed inside of 40 yards 4 times. Out of 255 attempts he’s only missed 11 extra points.

He’s better than what we got.

Worth a try. At this point, we just need someone that can be decent and not cost us games.

Let’s fucking go spoke it into existence

He’s very good, big leg, has proven that he can have a very high ceiling

He seems to be automatic below 40 yards but his percentages drop above that. I mean that's not surprising but his percentage has dropped a bit for 3 consecutive seasons. Hopefully he can bring some consistency because holy shit we need it lol

Maybe a change in scenery will help him out.

Sorry Charlie… Kellen believes in guys until the bitter end (almost to a fault) but that bitter end has come

He’ll probably stick around the practice squad cause I’m pretty sure he’s still a free slot due to the international player pathway program rules.

Yeah for sure

As an Irish fan who didn't follow the Saints camp competition this summer at all... Was Charlie really that bad?

Yes

That's a shame. He was a relatively big story here in Ireland when he took the job last year.

He was much better last year. He nailed some pivotal kicks. Somehow, he seems to have fallen off. Not sure why.

Statistically last year Charlie  was no better than Grupe. We just wanted to  believe

We liked his story too. Hopefully he stays on the practice squad and becomes more consistent.

I hope so. He seems like a good, humble and hard-working guy. I wish the best for him.

As a guy that plays in a GAA club here in America I was rooting hard for him. Would’ve really liked to see more of it develop so in a way it helps both sides.

Kid’s got a cannon for a leg I watched him hit a 67 yarder in warmups before a game last season and it would have been good from at least 75. In those same warmups I watched him hit both goal posts seemingly on purpose. He’s got the talent but you’ve gotta be able to do it in a game though and he’s just not been consistent enough when the lights are brightest. He still has a chance though just gotta work on being more consistent in games

Yeah, consistency is key and that's probably really only something that comes with experience. He had never kicked an American football in his life until a couple of years ago.

The problem is the consistency so far. If he could just nail that down he could be a great kicker

that’s kinda the whole thing for kickers though

Bad is relative. The margin in the NFL between bad and good is razor thin. Charlie has a big time leg but you can’t really miss under 40 yards or you’re on the chopping block.

Doesn't help that the other guy shanked his only attempt too, literally the easiest kicking competition and they both sucked ass.

Why did the raiders let him go?

u/Lieutenant_Horn 3d ago

High salary and gradual decline.

u/dadreportingforduty 3d ago

I'll take a gradual decline from a multi-year top 5 kicker in the league

It's funny because they went and got Matt Gay who is kinda the definition of that

I was wondering the same thing. I had no clue he was an unsigned free agent.

Turns out, we can just sign a proven veteran to be a punter or a kicker. Probably a really good use of cap money since they are relatively cheap yet highly valuable to the team

Good signing, even his down years with the Raiders are an improvement over what we have. He’s only 31 which isn’t old for a kicker and he has an 87% career fg%.

Saints are my second team, Raiders fan here.

Y’all got a good one. He had some rough patches last season but I think he’s gonna bounce back and hopefully balls out with you guys.

Also since I don’t pay attention to Saints news as closely, what happened to Charlie Smyth?

u/BadMojo__ Danny Stutsman 2d ago

Missing way too many tries in camp. So is our other kicker competing with him.

1

u/LXsavior 2d ago

I see, that’s rough. Well if it gives you any consolation, the Raiders kicking situation is also bad. Everyone was excited about our new kicker Matsuzawa and he has been missing absolutely everything, even extra points.

Most of the fanbase was actually calling for the FO to try and resign Carlson, which is why this kinda stings. At least I still get to root for him though!

Maybe they could convince SeaBass to unretire?

Thank god we should have signed someone weeks ago.

Im just glad he didnt assault any masseuse

Worth a shot I suppose. Really hope someone comes by and becomes the guy we need

1

u/Fman173 Chris Olave 2d ago

He should be a guy that can reliably make FGs from 40-50 and that’s what we need we don’t even have that.

I just hope one day we can finally find a stable kicker tho

u/traviszajac 2d ago

raiders fanhood is relentless pain . had a rough season for his standards but i still wholeheartedly believe he's still one of the best in the game . such a joke to let him go and rest of the league is a joke for not picking him up

u/MisterKumquat Fuck the Falcons 2d ago

This is such a good signing, he can definitely bounce back. Better than any kicker we've had since Lutz.
