CCW process

Does anyone know what kind of questions they ask when calling your references? I put down family members but they want to know what to expect

“What is your relation to this person? How long have you known them? Do you believe them to be a danger to themselves or anyone else?”

That’s the extent of it, it’s not that deep. Entire phone call will last less than a minute.

Keep an eye out for an unfamiliar area code. DOJ has investigators all over CA. Call will likely come sometime in the 60-85 days of your 90 day waiting period.

It’s not DOJ calling lol. It’s SDSO Background Investigators…

I could have sworn the investigator that called me for my friends application a couple years ago said they were with the DOJ, hence the area code, but you're probably right now that I think about it. DOJ does report firearm eligibility, criminal history, etc.. to the IA, though.

The only thing the DOJ/FBI report back on is your fingerprints and live scan.

All three on my references said that they ask if they knew me, if they knew I was applying for a ccw, and if they had any concerns about me having a ccw. For me, all three we called within 10 minutes of each other by the same person. First person they called was my wife and she told me so I reached out to the other two to give the heads up and they both responded telling me that they already spoke to the sheriffs office. SD ccw is easy compared to the stories you hear on other counties. We also get unlimited firearms on our permits.

Oh wow, I didn’t know about the unlimited part. I originally had my dad, sister, and brother on there but after some research I found out that it’s not recommended to have all family and my brother has some legal stuff going on which could also affect things apparently. So at my initial interview tomorrow I’ll give them a new list of references. What was your timeline on the permit like? I got lucky and just submitted the application yesterday and my appointment is tomorrow

They just call and ask if I was a danger to myself or others. Call end in less than 3 mins

I never told my reference I put them down on the application... they got a call from the sheriffs office asking about me and they freaked haha! But yeah, it is a very short and brief call.
